Would anyone be up for a Monday word challenge? I need something to kick me in the arse. I'd like to hit at least 30,000 total words by the end of the day tomorrow (I'm at 21, 364 right now).
Anyone else want to challenge themselves tomorrow?

well, seeing how I did 2 days of low word counts 1270 and 487 and my original goal was at least 3k per day, I think maybe I should try to reach 30k by midnight Monday too, so I can get back on track. I'm at 25,818 at the moment. That means I have to write 4,182.

I am really bent on having myself a personal writing marathon after work tomorrow because I added fewer than 300 words this entire weekend and went from being a few days ahead to right back on schedule. My daily record so far is only about 5,800 words, so if I can at least match that again tomorrow, I'll feel better about fighting the inertia I've succumbed to.

I'm up for it. I'll be at 11,000 before I go to bed tonight, and I'd love to really add a lot to that. I have to be realistic, however, since I have a bit of a busy day tomorrow. Hmm...probably 2000 is realistic? Well, now that I think about it, I'll drive for 3000, to get to 14,000, setting me up for a nice run to 20000 on Tuesday.

What is the challenge, exactly? ;_;
I think someone should challenge me to a word count, because... I have done like nothing in the area of word count today.

I would really like to be at 25k by the end of the day. It's my busiest day and I've written a bit in between classes that I need to add onto my word count when it's actually typed into that particular doc. But I'm shooting for 25k by the end of the night. I'm at 20, so 5k shouldn't be too hard right? :-P
I'm impressed. Everyone's setting pretty high goals. :]

I'm going to challenge myself to hit 40k by the end of business tonight. I am really really angry at my novel so the idea of hitting 40k and being only 10k away from being able to finally take that giant step back and breathe for a minute before starting fresh on something new is AMAZING to me, especially on day 9. I hate week two. I freakin hate week two.

2500 today for me. Good enough. Anyone else have a major, irreconcilable discrepancy between their word processor's wordcount, and the wc you get from the site's validator? I've ruled out hyphenated words.

I did it! I hit 30,055 at 3 minutes before midnight! YAY!
I haven't tried using the validator yet - so far I've just been typing in the manual count at the top of the page. However, last year, there was a HUGE - major big, extraordinarily WICKED HUGE - discrepancy between my word processor's word count and the NaNoWriMo Validator. It was different by well over 10k words.
The last date I did a manual word count entry I had around 200k words, which was my goal for 2008. I stopped writing when I reached like 200k and a couple of hundred. When you looked at my NaNo Stats graph, you could see that I had written a pretty even amount through out the month, with the bars rising about the same each day.
Than on November 28th or 29th, I uploaded my NaNovel into the validator and suddenly the last bar on my Stats chart sky rocketed to 238,153 words!!! I revalidated three times and each time it said the same thing. I couldn't believe it was so different. Basically, any one looking at my graph would have thought I had written a whopping nearly 40k on the last day of the contest!!!!! OMG!
I had several folks NaNoMail me during December and accusing me of having cheated because of it. I tried explaining to them, that there was a word count discrepancy between my word processor and the NaNo Validator bot, and that's why the bar on the graph jumped so high the last day. They did not believe e and said so in some pretty nasty replies. This after NaNo flame attack upset me quite a bit and is thus the reason I no longer use NaNoMail.
But yeah, I would expect the validator to do pretty much the same thing this year as well. I'm not sure why the difference. I know my word processor counts actual words - in other words, every time you hit the space key, it adds one more word. I'm guessing the NaNoValidator must count characters and than divide them into words - say it counts every 5 characters as equaling one word or some thing like that, instead of counting the actual words them selves. It's the only think I can think of that would account for the discrepancies.
I was not the only one who had this trouble last year. I remember several folks saying it had happened to them too, and not always in a good way. With mine it *gave* me an extra 38k, but with some folks, it *took away* 10k or more! A lot of folks were pretty frustrated, because they thought they had reached 50k by their word processor's count only to find they still had quite a ways to go according to the NaNoValidator.
It seems to happen every year too, that's why I don't wait til the last day to validate.

Yeah I've never had a problem with discrepency. This year it's either been spot-on or gave me one extra word.

Phew. I just checked again and my discrepancy hasn't really grown, despite my having added several thousand words since first noticing it. It's just over 300 words, which in the grand scheme of things is negligible. I'm even more baffled now, though, because it was right around 300 words way back when I only had about a 2K-word total. I'm one of the unlucky ones for whom the validator gives me a smaller count than my word processor, but as long as that discrepancy doesn't take a giant leap up, I can't complain. But I'm determined to solve this mystery--*after* I hit 50K, of course.

I just tested it myself and it was exact. I handwrite my novel, then I enact the Luddite clause, but this year I'm writing it by hand AND typing it up. So in essence I'm write the whole thing twice. I can't have my computer with me always, so I rely on my notebook to keep myself ahead.
