50K Words!

Tada. How did I do it so quickly?

1. Have a great, well developed main character in mind
2. Spend October writing an outline- a gigantic, 12 section outline with 10 bullets under each point that covers 6k words and has a glossary containing all characters and locations mentioned in the book and a 10 word description of each
3. Take the first week of November off of work
4. Have an understanding spouse who gets that you are compelled to do this.

I’m sure there’s more to it, but damn, I’m too excited right now to go into more detail, but as of 9pm on the 9th, I have 50298 words.

WOOT.

We will be upstairs (if anything happens or you can't find us, just ask for Nanowrimo and the staff should be able to direct you)
Sunday afternoon: 2pm-5pm (some folks might stay longer but that's a nice block of time.
That way we've got lots of time and if its snowing then it will be easier to drive during day etc.

Join us for the traditional sunday write in at Panera. 4-8pm. In past years we've meet at the Panera on M-59 in Waterford, but this one has MANY more plugs and areas to sit.

This one is located on Telegraph between Orchard Lake Rd and Square Lake Rd. I keep forgetting its actually in Bloomfield Hills, I keep thinking its Pontiac.

Do evenings work?
do weekends work best? If so, sat or sunday?
Currently I am leaning towards either friday night (Dec 5), sat evening (6th) or Sunday day (7th ).

Do any of these dates sound good? Does Woody's in Royal Oak work well for folks?

As promised in the WDET Detroit Today topic, on Monday, November 17, NaNoWriMo was featured on the radio program of the same name. For 15 minutes, founder Chris Baty and our very own ML, Tiffany, traded quips with host Creg Fahle, who seemed to not quite believe educated adults would do something like this just for personal satisfaction.

The show is available as a podcast on the show's web site for at least a few days. The NaNoWriMo segment begins 74 into the recording.

Here's the first minute:

Craig Fahle: And this is Detroit Today on WDET, Detroit Public Radio. You may not have known this, but it's National Novel Writing Month, and it's already about halfway over. But there is still time, still time to complete your masterpiece by the November 30th deadline. National Novel Writing Month.

CF: Here to talk about it right now on the phone, we have Chris Baty, the founder of this, and in charge of the national level. Hi, Chris!

Chris Baty: Hi, Craig, how are you doing?

CF: Very good, thanks for being with us. We also have Tiffany Lamb, who is the metro Detroit liason for this, and a five-time participant.

Tiffany Lamb: Yes!

CF: So you're an accomplished writer at this point.

TL: Only in November.

CF: (Laughs) Well, Chris, I want to talk about this. The goal of this, apparently, is just write. Write anything that comes out of your mind, but just try to make it as cohesive as possible, but, but quantity, not quality, I guess is the goal here.

CB: Exactly! But there's kind of a strange thing that happens, I think, when you set out on this odyssey of 50,000 words in thirty days, that when you do kind of turn off that inner editor and just sort of go with it, that actually when you do write for quantity, rather than quality, you end up getting both. I think you end up kind of, sort of allowing yourself to really just sort of dive into it. And the manuscripts that get written in a month are actually surprisingly un-horrible.

Okay, okay, I moved to Texas and this isn't my region anymore. But dangit, I miss you folks, and I want to know how you -- and your novels -- are doing!

As for me, my novel is coming along quite swimmingly. I'm back to cheesy, fluffy, sappy, delicious chick lit, and I'm having so much fun writing it again. My poor characters have taken the brunt of everything that's stressed me out over the past couple of weeks, but they're surviving and so am I. I love the story and the way the characters are writing themselves, and it just feels really, really good to write this story. I love my characters very much. There are such big, wonderful things in store for them. All the bumps and bruises they've gotten to get where they are will be worth it.

And my word count is pleasing me greatly, though I see that my dear sheepgoddess is about 600 words ahead of me at this point! Looks like I have some work to do tomorrow. ;)

Seriously though, I miss you guys a ton, so tell me how you're doing. Texas in body, Motown in heart. <3

It has come to my attention that a large number of people in my region would like to challenge Detroit this NaNo.

This is very simple, really. We promise to write more than you. You then promise to write more than we do. We then rib each other good-naturedly throughout the month.

It does seem to be a great motivation, and it's always fun, too..

Winner is determined in the following fashion: Highest average per person wordcount wins... (That means total words divided by number of participants.)

Greetings Nanos! I hope everybody is getting along well with your word counts. I am terribly behind. That’s ok though, I intend to catch up this week and am still aiming for victory!

This Saturday we’ll be meeting from 3:00 to 5:00 pm once again, only this time we’ll be in the library’s basement computer lab instead of the large meeting room by the front doors. To find this room, simply walk straight back toward the children’s section from the library’s front doors. You will pass through a set of double doors and then you'll see a door on your left that leads downstairs to the bookshop/ training rooms. There’s also an elevator if you prefer, just ask a staff member to guide you to it. There will be computers available for anyone who would like to use one, or you can bring your laptop.

Write In: Early Morning in Oxford / Lake Orion?

My best time for a write in is not the same as the majority's. Plus, I live further north, which means I could almost be in the Michigan: Elsewhere region (but I'm not changing now, since they are challenging us). Is anyone interested in meeting up around Oxford or Lake Orion on Tuesday or Thursday mornings between 8 - 10am? I don't expect to get many takers because of the time and location, but thought I'd give it a shot.

Three days to go: First time participant

Three more days to the kick off. Any tips for a first timer who is feeling the jitters?
The long email from Nano has really made me feel edgy. I understand there are veteran NaNoer's who start at the midnight. I am lucky if i get my thought process straight at midday let alone midnight. On the best of my writing days I get around two pages written and suddenly I realise that I have to write four. And trust me those are not really good pages. They are so bad that after reviewing them three times I get the first coherent rough draft.

My fears aside, I do look forward to the writing month. I want to write more than the 50000 words and make each of those words count.
I write because I believe I have a credible story (or two) to share. I will write to that belief.
I am the voice of my characters. I will write for them and not let their voices get stifled.
Anyways that was just to psyche myself up.

Any practical suggestions?
