[STICKY] [Events] Wednesday Weekly Drinkies

NaNoDrinkies nights are our social time out from writing. They're open to all ages and this year will be held at three degrees bar brewery at QV, on the corner of Swanston and Lonsdale Streets. We usually hang out in the back right-hand corner (as you're facing into the bar from the front doors), but if it's busy I'll be wearing bunny ears the first few times to help people find us. If you get absolutely lost my mobile number is 0423 100 346.

All you need to bring to drinkies is yourselves and some dosh to be able to partake of the delicious drinks (the raspberry lemonade is a particularly fine vintage for those who aren't of age for booze) and yummy snacks or meals (with vegetarian and gluten-free options).

Drinkies begin on Wednesday 21st of October at 5.30 PM and will run weekly through to Wednesday 9th of December, starting at 5.30 PM.
[STICKY] [Events] Saturday Write-ins

The Sunday write-ins don't have to be the only weekly write-ins.

The Cup Day write-in doesn't have to be the only special day write-in.

Last year, we had write-ins at Complete Post, an office building where we could write in a comfortable meeting room and also use the kitchen and BBQ areas. Monique has let me know that we're able to use the building again, perhaps for a couple of Saturday write-ins if people are interested, so please post here if you are so I can let her know so she can let us know when she'll be able to swing it.

As well as that, if anyone wants to organise any write-ins on other days (or nights, or afternoons, or whenevers) or at alternate locations, since we are spread out all across Victoria here, please feel free to let us all know in this thread, and I can add them to the calendar.

Ideally a write-in location should be accessible by public transport, have enough room for a fair few people to gather (we can get anywhere from 5 to 15 people turn up, judging from past years), have plenty of power points (or you can request that people bring powerboards/extension cords), and be okay for people to have food and drink there. If you think extra chairs or cushions might be needed, mention it in your post. It might also be worth mentioning any pets that live at the venue: some people might be allergic to cats, or simply not appreciate your tarantula colony.

So, if you want to host a write-in, or if you're interested in the Complete Post write-in idea, please reply!
[STICKY] [Events] Sunday Weekly Write-ins

The lovely Scarlett Archer has once again volunteered her place for weekly write-ins. They'll be held on Sundays from 1PM onwards at Scarlett's home, which is 37 Windsor Avenue, McKinnon. If you need directions or want to confirm that people are still writing, please contact Scarlett on 0415 088 052.

The first write-in will be the 1st of November, then the 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th unless otherwise advised.

BYO food and drink, writing implements of choice, powerboards and extension cords (if you have boards and cords available).

N.B. Write-ins are primarily focused on writing. They can be a social time as well, but if a word war or quiet writing time is in progress, please respect that.

Also, Scarlett has cats, so anyone allergic to cat dander should take that into consideration.
[ML Announcement] Melbourne vs. Sydney -- It's Official!

The region rivalry between Melbourne and Sydney is legendary. Forget the AFL, the Melbourne Cup, the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race -- it's all about the word count at the end of November.

This year, we're putting our money where our mouths are.

During November, the MLs of both regions will be collecting donations at write-ins and other events. At the end of the month, all monies gathered will be donated to NaNoWriMo in the name of the winning region -- that's the region with the highest average word count per writer, just to make things fair.

It's yet another incentive to crank out those words during November. In the end both regions will benefit by helping keep NaNoWriMo running for another year. All you have to do is chip in what you can afford to -- and of course write, write, write!

Lauren (Melbourne) and Darren/Killraven (Sydney)

Verified, Replied, & a broken arm

Well, this is to reply to all the folks that replied to my "finished" thread! I'm really glad I did it when & how I did because on the 6th (6:15pm local time here -- 11:15am on the 7th in Melbourne)... I broke my left arm in about the most severe way possible: radius and ulna both, double greenstick compound break. Required 2 steel plates, a dozen screws, and a wrist pin to put back together -- plus 55 medical staples, a straight pin immobilizer, many dressing changes so far of cotton batting and ace bandages, plus an anti-movement immobilizing traction splint (which makes it impossible to be comfortable). I was in the Operating theatre 5 hours after the accident (push-bike accident... if you want the whole of the story, PM to let me know), and awoke from the anesthesia 4 hours after that in hospital. The medical situation here in the States for the uninsured (like myself) is pretty dire. They were only allowed to keep me in hospital until I was "stable" -- meaning, "not immediately under threat of death, complaint attended to by Emergency staff," and still I was there 4 days.

I would never have made 50K typing at the speed I'm able with only one operationally functional hand. I am now verified, but at 2 words less than my editor program of choice counted. Ah well... 72,307 instead of 72,309!

But here are my responses to those of you who replied to me!

Lauren E. Mitchell wrote:
That gives you heaps of time to organise your relocation! Good luck with that, as I'm sure it'll be much more complicated than writing!
Well, yeah... except I have no one to assist me in anything and barely am able to organise a trip to the loo!

Felixaar wrote:
*picks up phone* Johnson? I think we've broken the light barrier.
Nah, maybe Mach 3 at best...

sm_kaze wrote:
WHAT? Screenshots or it didn't happen.
Not cool. I get accused of this every year. I'm the one what broke the word count application and verifier here last year... three times. I don't even know you, so why would I have the need to prove my words to you? You believe what you want to believe and I'll know the truth.

Alisonnn wrote:
Oh my God xD Is your keyboard smoking?
I was even faster on a desktop computer. I make my living through writing, and found myself in those days needing a new keyboard every 4-6 weeks.

Lucid2009 wrote:
Wow, that's amazing! Congratulations.

I was just thinking how proud i am I reach 18,000 since kickoff time - and my fingers are sore, my wrists are sore, my eyes are sore - I've been going full throttle, full time, typing as fast as possible and I'm exhausted.

I'll have to keep going - now that I've read you've achieved so much so quickly I want to reach 20,000 before I go to bed tonight.
Thank you and... um, glad I, what... inspired you? :) Last year, after my huge project -- I finished on the 24th -- I was unable to verify due to how big it was and ended up verifying only 200,000 so that I didn't break it again (at the request of Chris Baty), and noticed that a day or so without typing kinda crippled me a bit. Like running and exercising and then stopping and sitting for an hour or so... it HURT. I couldn't even hold a cup very easily for days after... just be careful of yourself and don't permanently damage your achy hands.

Lauren E. Mitchell wrote:

sm_kaze wrote:
WHAT? Screenshots or it didn't happen.
May I just remind everyone that this sort of comment is not okay? From the Code of Conduct:

Quote:
Every year, we get dozens of posts accusing others of cheating at NaNoWriMo. Please—don't worry about cheaters. NaNoWriMo is an honor-system challenge; no one is cheating anyone but themselves if they don't write the novel they said they wrote.

Many writers plunge headlong into novelling once the first hits, with a head full of story just waiting to be written. With a day or two of free time without other committments, and a high WPM typing speed, there are a lot of people who can achieve quite high word counts very early on.
Don't fuss about other people's word counts. The only one that should matter to you is your own, and maybe someone else's if you're having a one on one war *eyes karalianne*.
Aww, thank you, Ms. ML-lady!

Quarmall wrote:
Someone works at Ludicrous Speed !

Congratulations and wow !
Someone is a Mel Brooks fan! And thanks kindly!

isabella-rayne wrote:
Delyra, I hope you read this, because I've overtaken your wordcount by 79 words! Muhahaha!

(no one mention that it took her one day and took me 8, please! :-P)
72,388 in 8 days? Average of 9,048½ per day is NOT something to downplay! If you keep that pace, you'll end at 271,455! Congratulations yourself!

maddybt90 wrote:
*mind boggles*
*used to think she was doing well...*
From what I've gathered in the thread, you were averaging more than 5667 per day and posted this on day 8? 45,336+ with over 3 weeks to go? That is something to be quite proud of! Remember, the goal is 50,000 words. Just think of those of us doing more as boorishly irrepressible show-offs! Congratulations!

Lauren E.
Day 25: Validation is now open!

*takes a break from writing frantically to explain this*

So, most of you know that when you hit 50K, you get the green bar. We've got a lot of them popping up around the Melbourne forum. This is because we are awesome.

But what you may not know, if you are a newbie or if you can't remember all the way back to last November, is that towards the end of the month, the official Word Count Validator opens. All you have to do is go to that page, paste your whole novel into the Word Count Validator box, and hit submit. If your novel is 50k or over...

...you get the highly sought after PURPLE BAR.

Because we're in one of the time zones that hits the 25th of November first, the Word Count Validator is now open. So go get that purple bar, gang! If you're not yet at 50k, now is the time to write like the wind! (I've overused that phrase this month, but anyway.)

Just briefly, while we're talking about colours, blue is better than grey, green is better than blue, purple is better than green, but the best colour of all is the gold donation halo. So if you haven't already donated, consider sending a few bucks NaNo's way so that we can help contribute to making the staff sing and dance.

GOOO MELBOURNE!
This feeling is just so amazing.

I just finished. It's currently 1AM, and there are absolutely no words to describe the level of joy I am feeling right now. This was truly one hell of an experience, and one of the best things I have ever done. I do not regret this for a moment.

When I reached 50k, I realized that I was in serious trouble - there were so many plot points to wrap up that it could have taken another 50k to do so and I just didn't have that much time. Instead of writing "everyone died the end" I instead came up with a creative solution to bring my novel to an end quickly - and it actually wound up BETTER than if I had written it as I'd originally planned.

I never communicated with you Lauren E. Mitchell but you seemed to be doing an excellent job as an ML here from what I observed. Thank you! I'll definitely be doing this next year, and good luck to everyone out there still writing, particularly those doing it for the first time. Finishing a novel is the best feeling in the world, and definitely worth it.
Last Write-In/Theme Party Sunday 29th of November 2009

Ok guys-

Last Write-In is happening on the 29th of November @ my house in McKinnon.

Since it's so close to the end date a lot of you may be using it to finish up your novels. And so to wrap things up I'm looking to make it a theme party of some sort.

Since dolling ourselves up could be pretty hazardous as

1. It could be freeking hot as hell
2. It could be pissing down raining
3. We want to be as comfortable as possible

I've decided on the following theme:

NaNoWriMo's Bad Taste Write-In

This is to follow the horrible writing that was or was not produced in November, and to celebrate it. As some ideas pulled from a site on the subject these might help you decide on what you would like to come dressed as:

Sleazy suits, comb-overs and far too much make-up would be perfect for the night! Gold chains and hairy chests would also suit the mood.

Simply think of the last person you’d want to spend the night with and dress accordingly. Awkward, tacky characters would suite the night… Icons like Les Patterson, Norm Gunston, Derrick and Clive, and more.

For other costume ideas you could tell guests to dress up as inappropriate characters or historical figures.

Another idea is to have guests arrive dressed in the theme of bad jokes such as the proverbial Englishman, Irishman and Scotsman, and other joke themes.

So basically just come as badly dressed as you can. Come as a character in your story who you wouldn't want to spend 5 minutes with. Put on some disgusting green eyeshadow and black lipstick, a pair of thongs and your undies over your jeans. Whatever works well for you. Basically dressing DOWN. I don't mean naked down because if you do actually turn up naked or some sort of total inappropriateness I'll have to use my host-fu on you and take action.

If you would like to bring some food- lets really make it look unappealing. I repeat look unappealing. I don't mean actually be unappealing so I'm sued by eight of you because of salmonella. But throw in food die in there or shape it into road kill. You see where I'm going with this.

As other times it seems to work well to bring a couple of dollars and put it in the kitty then we all go and pick up some food, so if you have some gold coins on you that'd be great.

It will begin at 1.30pm and go on until it wraps up and I kick y'all out. PLEASE PLEASE RSVP. As this is the last Write-In I am hoping a lot of you will turn up, but if you don't RSVP there is a chance you will turn up and not have a seat to sit on.

If you have any questions please PM me.

----------
I know you're all sick to death of this, but..

It's come to my attention that people may have thought I was accusing some of you of being the imposter. It was clumsy wording on my part, because that is not what I was saying, at all.

Not for one second was I doubting that your intentions weren't to help (although in my semi-psychotic haze I did think y'all were overreacting about me being hurt that you doubted me). I just didn't quite catch the sub-text that you were hurt about me accusing you of something much worse.

I'm very sorry, people. I feel awful. And kind of horrified thinking about how it would have made you feel, too.

Day 24

I know it's only 1.30, but I thought I'd kick this off for the day by announcing that, after hitting 40k last night, I have finally figured out how the following elements in my novel fit together:

* A Mexican drug cartel
* An ancient Mayan village
* A famous writer
* A less famous proofreader
* A roller derby team
* A conspiracy involving air conditioning
* A small herd of velociraptors

I suspect it may take slightly more than another 10k to tie all of these loose ends up.
[Events] TGIO Party

It's time to start planning the Thank God It's Over party!

It'll be on Saturday the 5th of December in the evening as per tradition (which makes it much easier for me to organise). The thing we need now is a venue. In the past we've generally had it at someone's house, as central as possible. All the hosts are obliged to provide is the venue; Wrimos are requested to bring food to share, and to BYO alcohol.

Is anyone willing to put their hand up to host?

Things are appearing, and disappearing. And no, I am not talking abotu the editing!

So, who to kill? Isnt it strange that, as an author, I can say that, an the police wont be knocking at my door?

I nearly killed Brenda.. had one of her hands ripped off, and THEN her sniping spot was blown to shite...

OT- but really cool.

OK, so the last three days have been hell-ish, but, today I found out I've been approved for Early housing from DHS, the lady in the op shop gave me "Little Miss Sunshine" for free, and BEST OF ALL:

I found the most delicious chocolate spread imaginable. It is called "Loving earth raw organic". It tastes like brownie in a jar, or maybe chocolate crackle, except better.

BUT- the best part is- it is good for you! Coconut butter supports healthy weight management. (says so on the jar).

Again, I know this is totally off-topic, but in fairness chocolate this good surely deserves its own thread? ;-)

How fast do people write?

My best effort so far has been 2000 words in half an hour... But I'm guessing heaps of people are way faster!
This is my madness.

Hey everyone, I've been having a really slow NaNo - as you may be able to see, I am sufficiently behind. I have been typing very slowly this year too, and I haven't been able to figure out why (then late the other night I remembered I actually own glasses I'm supposed to wear when I'm a) tired, b) reading, and/or c) on the computer. Not surprisingly it did make a (small) difference putting them on).

The most I've ever been able to write before in a day, is 10k. I figure though, that Bella was able to make 50k in a day the other day, so why can't I? Because this NaNo I seem to be averaging 500 words (on my NaNo *cough*) an hour - previous years it has been an average of 1k an hour, or 2k if I really knuckled down.

So today I'm aiming for 15k. Chances of making it? Slim. Do I care? No, as long as I'm re-gaining some ground on my NaNo and making progress on my novel - I'll be happy just to bash out a few more words, but what's life without a little ridiculous challenge every so often?

Already other tasks for my day are mounting and I'm not going to ignore them, that being said... I'm... I'm... I've lost my train of thought.

At some point today, I'd really like to do at least one half-hour word war, and one hour long word war. If there is anyone else interested, please come join me in IRC - I'll be doing this late morning/noon - ish.

Here is to helping Melbourne thwart Sydney! :D

As Fade is not on the forums, I will supply you with the "CLEANSE THEM WITH FLAME".

Good luck on your writing today, all! :D

IRC code of conduct

I'm sad that I have to actually tell people this, since I thought everyone was sensible enough not to act this way, but I do just want to say a few quick things about usage of the IRC chat channel.

Please do not use racial slurs, homophobic slurs, transphobic slurs, sexist slurs, etc. against other chatters (or anyone, for preference). I thought everyone was reasonably mature in this region, but there have been a couple of incidents and so I thought I'd better say something just in case.

Also, if another chatter is irritating you, don't rise to the bait. If I have to kick people for being nasty to each other, I will not accept 'he/she started it!' as a reason. None of us are in primary school any more, okay? That excuse is not valid. Speak to them privately, or message me and I can speak to them, but don't turn the chat into a sniping contest. This also goes for if someone is making you uncomfortable. Let them know privately that you are not okay with the topic of discussion and ask them nicely to stop. On the other side of this if someone asks you to knock it off, please respect their feelings. Chat is a place for word wars, banter, and friendly socialising.

Speaking of private messaging, if you're, let's just say, really hitting it off with another Wrimo, take it to private messaging. The main channel is not the place to use for intimate interactions. If you click on the user name of the person you wish to speak to privately, in most clients it should open a private message between the two of you. If you wish to have a private conversation with more than one person, you can create your own channel.

Finally, we're all here to shoot for 50K. Some of us are already there, some of us are ahead of quota, and some of us are behind quota. But it doesn't matter who gets there first, how fast they get there, or who comes first or last in word wars. We're here to write, and writing is something that everyone does at their own pace. That said, it's great to see the way some people are putting their word count in their nick; it's a fun way to be able to see how people are going.

Thanks everyone. I'm sorry to have to lay down the law, but I really do not want chat becoming an unpleasant place for anyone.
It is not easy for me to say this...

Okay, this is difficult for me to write but I feel it's about time for me to set the record straight about what has been going on.

As many of you know, there's been a lot of drama on IRC these past couple of days. There have been impostors visiting the chat. Accusations, allegations and suspicions have been circulating these past couple of days.

I've come here to say that I was the impostor.

It started off as a joke between friends, that was all it was intended to be. But several things happened that night, and I was deeply hurt by a few people in the group. When you are hurt, you don't think about your actions. So I acted out irrationally.

To say that I never expected it would blow up the way it did is an understatement. I never considered the domino effect of my actions, much less predict how some individuals would react to the situation, intensifying the circumstances to a degree that I never ever would have expected nor intended.

I would like to personally apologize to the people who unnecessarily got caught up in this. I am truly sorry you were all dragged into this mess.

But most of all I want to apologize to Enomis. I was hurt yes, but you definitely did not deserve to be treated the way you have been the past couple of days. I know you will never forgive me, and I'm not asking to be forgiven.

I will be stepping away from Nano this year. I will not be attending any meet-ups or social events, and I will not be online. The one thing I ask is for my account to be deleted after this month.
