July!

Yes, it's that time again! And rather sooner than I anticipated - goodness knows what happened to all of June...

Anyhow, I would like to propose meeting on Saturday, the 12th of July, at 2pm at the Round Table. Would that work for you?
where to write

I don't know why I didn't think of coming here, of all places, to ask. It seems totally obvious to me now.

I transplanted from San Antonio, TX to London as of Feb. 1st this year. Since then, I've been a bit frustrated with a city that seems to close down at 6pm (and I work til 6). Back in Texas, there was any number of all night diners and coffee shops that were good choices for sitting back with a laptop, drinking coffee, and writing.

I've been desperately looking for something similar here. It doesn't even have to be all night. Just maybe open til 11-12. :p I find it incredibly difficult to write at home because of all the "other things I should be doing". I find the bustle/buzz of a diner/coffee shop to work well for me.

Any tips or advice appreciated. Is there a late night "good writing" spot out there? :)
OT: Verdi's Requiem, anyone?

Not even remotely writing-related (sorry!), but just in case any of you might be interested:

The London Orpheus Choir - with me lurking somewhere in the 1st soprano section - will be joining forces with Ealing Choral Society to sing Verdi's Requiem on the 12th of June at 7:30pm.

The venue is St. George's Cathedral, Southwark, which is in Westminster Bridge Road, London, SE1 7HY
Tickets are £15 (£13 concessions), and will be available on the door.

I reckon this is going to be a good 'un. It's a wonderfully dramatic piece of music, and there will be about a hundred and fifty of us singing it, which should make for an impressive sound.

Hope some of you will be able to make it along!
Book Launch and Farewell London Meet

Please Kill the Neighbours (But Don't Piss Them Off) - NaNo 2006
£6.00 pb (save 25p) or £1.20 ebook (save 30p)
Most nuisance neighbours can be dealt with by a court order. When your neighbour is a country ruled by an evil wizard, we recommend a demon. Of course, you need someone - disposable - to summon the damn thing.
Meet Cullan and his companions, Alys and Kenyon, and follow their adventures when they're blackmailed into escorting Morgan, a gifted young mage, into a hostile country so that she can fulfil her Destiny.
(Extracts here)

Finish the Job so We Don't Have To - NaNo 2007
£6.25 pb (save 24p) or £1.20 ebook (save 30p)
Whenever you kill an evil wizard there are three things you should remember: Kill his bodyguards and sidekicks as well; Steal all his treasure; Have an escape route planned in advance. So ... second time lucky?
A second chance arrives for Cullan and his companions to loot the Tower of Morss - not that they really want to go back there, after what happened last time. Especially with an invading army in the way. Oh, and having to kill the three most well-protected people in a besieged city.

All feedback (that doesn't involve men in white coats) welcome!

Do any other Londoners have any Nano offerings online?

OT: Beethoven, anybody?

This doesn't relate to writing, and it's probably a bit cheeky my posting it here, but some of you might be interested.

The London Concert Choir - yours truly somewhere in the bass section - are performing Beethoven's Missa Solemnis (Mass in D) at the Barbican on Thursday March 20th. Barbican concert page.

It's going to be good. We're really getting into it now. The deer-in-the-headlights stage is over and we're having fun and making music.

So come by and enjoy some of the finest music ever written by a deaf person.

----------
"Let me guess. He always cries at weddings, right?"
"Och, nay, na at all. 'E always cries at good plot exposition."
Bookselling advice?

Hello all,

Bit of an off-the-wall question this, but I need a bit of advice about how best to sell my books and turn a profit. I have tons of brand-new, unread books, and it's finally dawned on me that I could sell them for a bit of cash. Now, it's expensive to sell them on-line as postal costs would leave me with a razor-thin margin, but neither can I just set up a folding table on the high street and flog them from there. Or can I? Would I need a licence to sell my books on the street? What other alternatives have I got? Your advice would be very much appreciated...

March!

Some of you may remember that we talked about having a weeknight meet this month, since not all of us are free on Saturdays at the moment.

So, would Tuesday the 18th work for you?

Venue-wise, it was suggested a while ago that we might try going to the Mad Hatter, Waterloo, which is a large pub that normally has space in the evenings. (It also has a fine collection of hats in glass cases, and also an Alice in Wonderland ceiling painting somewhere near the back.)

Oh, and apologies to those who can only do weekend meets. No doubt we will be back at the Round Table on a Saturday afternoon in the near future!

Edit: We'll be meeting around 7pm, as usual.

How to spot me:
I'll have a NaNo table tent or two.

The schedule:
5:30 - 5:45 arrival and greetings
6:45 - 7:30 more speedy writing

You don't have to break if you don't want to, but please no gossip allowed during the 45 minute writing periods. Plenty of gossip before and afterwards and in between, though.

If you RSVP, I'll know how many seats to save!
----------

----------

Post-NaNo writing session, anyone?

I completely failed NaNo (although I did write three short stories in November) and I'd quite like to get my writing groove back on. Anyone up for a coffee-enhanced writing session over the next few weeks? W could have mince pies and be festive...
EVENT: TGIO Party (Weeknight), Thursday the 6th of December, 7pm

Event: 'Thank God It's Over' Party (Weeknight Edition)
Date: Thursday, the 6th of December, 2007
Start Time: 7pm

Venue: The Chequers Tavern, Piccadilly.
The pub is exceedingly small, so we'll be fitting in wherever possible, and shouldn't be too hard to find.

Directions: The pub is in Duke Street, which is one of the small roads between Piccadilly and Pall Mall - see map.

The nearest tube stations are Piccadilly Circus and Green Park. Charing Cross Station is also within fairly easy walking distance.

How to spot your fellow writers: We will as always have a meerkat.

Things to bring: If you'd like to share excerpts from your novel, that would be splendid (...and I promise not to force anyone to read out loud!). Needless to say, cuddly mascots are also still very much welcome. :)

Special Features: I will be bringing along the official NaNo goodies, which are ever so cool. (This year, we have stickers - hooray!)

***

As always, the party is open to all NaNo members, whether or not you hit the 50k.
And of course, we also welcome people from other counties - if you can commute into London, we don't mind where you started out from. :)
EVENT: TGIO Party (Weekend), Saturday the 1st of December, 2pm

Yes, it's nearly time to upload those final wordcounts after a week of frantic typing... which means that it's also nearly time for the TGIO Party!
As always, the party is open to everyone who took part, whether or not you hit the 50k mark.

(There will also be a weeknight TGIO party in the first week of December - details to be decided very shortly!)

***

Event: 'Thank God It's Over' Party (Weekend Edition)
Date: Saturday, the 1st of December, 2007
Start Time: 2pm (probably finishing around seven-ish)

Venue: The Round Table, Leicester Square.
We will be in the upstairs room, which is completely separate from the bar, so under-18s should be okay.
The pub sells food, but the quality (and, indeed, supply) has been unpredictable of late, I would recommend having lunch somewhere else beforehand.

Directions: The pub is in St. Martin's Court, just off Charing Cross Road - see map.

(For those coming in via Leicester Square tube: exit the station on to Charing Cross Road, and turn left - St. Martin's Court will be the first turning on your left past the big theatre.)

How to spot your fellow writers: Look out for our cuddly meerkat!

Things to bring: If you'd like to share excerpts from your novel, that would be splendid (...and I promise not to force anyone to read out loud!). Needless to say, cuddly mascots are also still very much welcome. :)

Special Features: I will be bringing along this year's official NaNo goodies, which are exceedingly nifty. (Don't worry, weeknight-only people - I'll do my best to set some aside for you!)
Word War Banter

Hello (...and welcome, people coming here from other regions)!

This thread is for light-hearted banter between participants in this year's Regional Word War. (You'll find similar word war banter threads in the regional lounges of other parts of the UK, which you may want to check out.)

Do please remember that while a certain amount of name-calling and so forth is to be expected, we do still need to follow the main forum rules; so use emoticons where appropriate to keep things from getting too heated, and keep in mind that swearing is strictly forbidden on regional lounges.

Have fun!
Are you missing a small toy dog?

When we returned the remainder of our highly impressive pile of cuddly creatures to their rightful owners at the end of today's meet, we found ourselves with two dogs (one smaller than the other) that nobody laid claim to.

If either of the dogs are yours, rest assured that, though anxious to get back to their owners, they are being well looked after.
They will be taken along to all future meets (or alternative arrangements can be made for their return).

This surely has been an amazing month for us all - be we in our teens or in our sixties.

This website is fantastic and the work of the nanowrimo staff is simply splendid. Let's dig deep into our pockets and give a Christmas present to NaNoWriMo. Let's ensure that they will be here for us next year and that more libraries will be built for the kids who may never have seen a library before.

Well, this year's NaNoWriMo is over.
Better Luck Next Year

Well, I gave it my all and went thru many trials and tribulations to get to the 50K mark, but fell short. I missed days of writing due to procrastination and sheer laziness, lost thousands of words into the ethernet, some days just not bothering. But I had a lot of fun and I'm ready to do it all again, but alas, I have to wait another whole year. And even though I didn't come out a winner this year, I did get a hell of a jump on my novel so I will keep plodding away at it, although it won't be as much of a challenge with no deadlines to meet. This will keep me going until next year's challenge. Congrats to all of you who did make the 50K.

Peace,
