Word War Banter

Let loose the badgers of war on all those other regions...

This thread is intended to be light hearted, and while a certain amount of jibes and name-calling is to be expected, please follow the main site rules about behaviour on the boards. Smileys are actively encouraged! :->

Or course, we all know that England Elsewhere is going to sneak up and take first prize this year, don't we? It's time for Oxford to lose their crown... :->
Word War Rules

As Sammy our revered ML has said I can have a go at co-ordinating this for us... here are the rules...
*Where it says contact ML for things, contact me instead so I can pass info onto the peeps that need to know! Cheers!

Rules
Eligibility

You must live within the UK or Ireland, and be relatively close to the city or region you wish to represent.

Sign-ups

Your ML will provide a "Word War Sign Up” thread on your local forum to track word count. Participants will post ONCE in the Word War Sign Up thread by 8pm on 10th November stating that they wish to participate.

The Regional Word War

You must update your word count every two days, on the even numbered days of the month, by 8pm. If you are unable to update your count, contact your ML.
During the last partial week (26th –– 29th Nov), you must update your word count daily, by 8pm. If this isn't possible, contact your ML immediately.
If you do not update your word count on four consecutive occasions it will be assumed that you have given up and you will be removed from the war (unless you already have more than 50k) If you know that you’re going to be away and won’t be able to update, let your ML know so that we can prevent this.
You must input your final (verified) word count by midnight on 30th November. After midnight, you will no longer be able to update your count.

Scoring

You may drop out of the Regional Word War at any time up to 8pm on 20th November without affecting your region's count. If you do not drop out by messaging either myself or your ML, you will be in for the remainder of the competition, NO MATTER WHAT!
During the Regional Word War there will be a regularly updated leader board in the Cambridge forum.
Only the official word count from the "Word War Sign Up" threads on the NaNoWriMo web site will be considered when computing the final score.
After midnight on 30th November, I will compute the final score for the participating regions and will ask the other MLs from those regions (or their designated representatives) to verify the figures before declaring a winner.

Results

There will be two prizes:
The city/region with the highest average word count.
The city/region with the highest proportion of winners from the starting participants.

The MLs will compare results, and when all regions agree, the results will be posted on the NaNo boards.

Banter

Participants are encouraged to engage in good natured banter with participants from other regions in the various Word War Banter threads. Banter should remain good natured and within the bounds of good sportsmanship.

Our God-like powers

MLs decide what "good sportsmanship" means.
We reserve the right to remove folks from the competition for any violation of the rules and guidelines listed above.
MLs are the final authority in any dispute or question about the rules.

Trophies

To be determined...
----------

Europe :: England :: Elsewhere

Somerset. Where be we??

Hi, Anyone from Somerset out there? The land of the best cricket team and the best cider, (see NaDruWriMo!!) I'm originally from Central Somerset but now living in Suffolk. This is my second naNo year and, hopefully, I'm better prepared. My story, incidently, is largely set in Glastonbury!

Wiltshire

Time for me to make my presence felt I think.
Yes folks, the squirrel is back and MLing for Wiltshire yet again.

It looks like we're still being lumped in with England:Elsewhere but that's fine, I'm sure everyone else here is 'lovely'.

Wiltshire tends to have a slightly lower than average Nano turn out so I'm claiming, not only those people who live in Wiltshire, but also anyone who'll be visiting here in November. Or driving through. Or looking at it on a map (even if it's by accident).

For newcomers who might be wondering who I am, this will be my third year as a Nano participant and second year as ML. I've had drinks with Terry Brooks, lunch with Steven King and have been pushed out the way by Neil Gaiman, probably on his way to talk to someone far more important. Nothing to do with Nano but I thought I'd get the name dropping out the way early this year.

Vain posturing aside, every single person who turned up to one of my meets last year hit their 50k target, which is pretty good I think and while I probably shouldn't take all the credit for their achievement I'm going to anyway.

Oh, and to avoid any awkward incidents like last year I'd like to make it clear that I am actually male. Even on Tuesdays.

So who's with me this year?
----------

Warwickshire: Leamington, Warwick, Stratford, Coventry ...

Anyone from any of the above? I'm from Leamington. I know that could just about be under Birmingham, but I've found it a little too far to make any of the meet-ups. So, anyone else?

Can you help? Random words needed.

Hi there
I am so stuck I cannot think of any ideas at all. I would be really grateful if you would post your favourite word or name on here and I will use this as a starting point. My favourite word at the moment is sonar. I think it sounds lovely. Maybe there'll be some bats in my novel somewhere.
Anyway, thanks in advance for your random words!
Nanowrimo on The Today Programme

Hi all,

Did anyone hear an article this morning on the Today Programme (Radio 4) about Nano? A Nanoer and a publisher were both interviewed. You can listen again here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/today/listenagain/

- easier if you've got Real Player installed, which I haven't and am not about to do just for this...

Can I just say WELL DONE to the Nano participant, I think she was called Claire (?) who stood up for herself, and us, in the face of a miserable old bint of a publisher who was saying how appalling it is for everyone to decide they can write a novel and how horrendous it would be if we all decided to send our novels to her.

Well, I think I shan't bother now.

I felt it should have been pointed out to her that if people didn't write novels, she wouldn't have a job.

Just wondered if anyone else heard it? I was driving at the time or I might have felt the need to phone up the BBC and voice my opinion!

Isle Of Wight Post-Nano Meet!

I propose such a thing! Yes I do!

Now as we only got the veterans turning up last itme, I suggest everyone who took part on the Island this year should make the effort. I also suggest somewhere a little different - though a pub as a constant is still a good idea. Annnnd for my FINAL suggestion...how does either this Saturday (1st) or the one following (8th) suit?
----------
Cos I see in you, more than you'll ever know
And I ask you why, you question the strength inside
And you need to know, how it feels to be alive
Cornwall Nano Meet

Hola all those in or around Cornwall (and anyone else that wishes to grace this thread ;)).

Myself, TS Rule and MagnusTyrel are looking at setting up a Nano-meet up sometime in the following week and this here is to scope out interest. Blessed as we are, we live in camborne but I'm sure with enough backing compromises can be made to where we host this amazing event (please let it be amazing).

So details I guess :

Location : First meet up will likely be pretty informal. But more importantly location is important so please discuss this so we can all come to a compromise. (local pubs are easy for me, but if there is somewhere truly awesome then please tell me, us, heck everyone).

Time : Time is quite important, I guess most have evenings free but that's an assumption so something to work on. I personally work freelance, so it isn't an issue for me (lucky aren't I)

TS has some wonderful ideas of what we can do which is good, because as you can tell I'm stumped :). So onto some likely activities barring the general revelary of being among like minded people.

Activities - Maybe trade opening chapters or something? Discuss inspiration and why you chose your novel idea etc? both great ideas from TS, no doubt more possible.

So I think that's it, I've been proactive (horrah me) and nanomailed most of those I have on my buddy list about this thread so lets hope something good can come about from this.

Discuss, etc.
Lincoln, anyone?

Why is it on anything like this, Lincoln always ends up being clumped together with Nottingham.
When I was at Uni in Leeds no-one ever knew where Lincoln was and I always said 'Its near Nottingham!'
Anyway, just checking whether there are any folks in the same boat as me - feeling left out in the sticks?
Guildford write-in: Saturday or Sunday?

Anybody interested in a write-in at the Starbucks at Sainsbury's in Clay Lane, Burpham, Guildford this weekend? Which is better, Saturday or Sunday?

Another Kent write-in this weekend?

Hi all,

Sorry for not posting this in the Kent thread, but it's getting HEEEYOOGE.

I would dearly love to come to Canterbury on Thursday for the write in, but I can't because I have to collect the youngster from school at 3pm, so would need to leave by 1.30 - 2 in order to make it in time.

Given that there are several of us at the Maidstone end of Kent, does anyone fancy a little write-in in town this weekend? Saturday or Sunday? Say upstairs in Caffe Nero maybe?

Can do any time, or any other venue, if anyone wants to go somewhere else. You could all come to my house and we can have FREE coffee instead, and access to plug sockets for laptops. I've just made a marble cake. Anyone?

Thank you all, you're all lovely. And I REALLY need a boost to my word count.

Love Cosmic x
Milton Keynes, Bucks

Hello all!

I've wanted to do this for ages, and this year I will be! I run the Creative Writing Group at the Borders bookstore in Milton Keynes, and have managed to get the store involved in NaNoWriMo. Lots of fun stuff happening! For those of you who are in the area (and hell, anyone who happens to chance by!), here's a list of the NaNoWriMo events I've got lined up so far:

- Wednesday 31st November, 7pm - National Novel Writing Month Launch Party.
Carole Matthews and Sarah Pinborough are coming along for a Q&A session where they'll be answering your questions about writing and getting published.
- Tuesday 6th November, 7pm - Carole Matthews (local author) will be giving a talk on how to get your work published.
- Wednesday 14th November, 7pm - Sarah Pinborough (local horror author) will be coming along to give advice on writing and talk with us.
- Tuesday 20th November, 7pm - Adrian Magson (local crime author) will be coming along to talk to us. He writes for the Beginning Writers column in Writing Magazine, so he has plenty of tips for those of us who are just starting out!
- Wednesday 28th November, 7pm - Sophie King (local author) will be joining us to talk and answer questions, and maybe do some workshopping. She also teaches creative writing.

And somewhere in all of that, I have to write 50,000 words. Whee! Everyone is welcome, so feel free to come along!

~Melanie

It's that time again so if anyone else is from Stoke or the surrounding areas, if you want to meet up or anything, that would be great. Let's make this a year we all pass. I have taken part for 2 years and have never passed the 50k mark but let's hope its third time lucky!
