TGIO Party: It's Official!!!

Well ladies and gents, just eleven hours shy of the deadline (or more, for those sneaky writers who are setting their clocks to Hawaii's time zone ;), I am pleased to announce our official National Novel Writing Month Pittsburgh TGIO Party!

Wednesday, December 3, 2008
5:30pm - ?
Spaghetti Warehouse
2601 Smallman St. (in the Strip)
Pittsburgh, PA 15222

If you've never been before, now's your chance! The Spaghetti Warehouse is absolutely fantastic (here's a link to their delicious menu), and it's definitely one of the coolest restaurants design-wise in the whole city. I'm not sure yet which room they'll seat us in, but they're all pretty darn neat (if you're unfamiliar with the place, our location has a 'trolley room' with an actual trolley car inside, and a 'bedroom' with tables that I think are made from actual beds).

I'm sure we'll have a fantastic time, and this time, we can all actually have a conversation instead of stressing over plot and word count (not that there are any other people in this city I'd rather stress about plot and word count with than all of yinz ;)!! There is one teeny tiny little favor I'd like to ask everyone to do when you come...

If everyone could pretty pretty please bring a one-page excerpt from their novel, I would totally love you forever! It's totally anonymous, so don't worry about putting your name on it or anything. Just a one-page excerpt (single- or double-spaced is fine, however it makes your excerpt fit the page better) that we can all pass around the table. I'll bring sheet protectors for each one, so we don't go spilling spaghetti sauce all over the place. Feel free to include the title of your novel at the top of the page, if you'd like, and any other information you want, like genre or final word count, or whatever little tidbit you want to share. Like I said, it'll be basically anonymous, but it will give everyone a chance to read the other novels out there.

If anyone has any questions about the TGIO party, just let me know. There is plenty of free parking available in the lot behind Spaghetti Warehouse, and it's also a pretty reasonable trip on the PAT bus (I know the 54C will let you off on Liberty and 26th, and then you can just pop down the two blocks - head toward the river!).

Also, feel free to bring your camera, and if you've got a NaNo t-shirt from any season, try to wear it. I'd love to get a big group picture of us!

And stay tuned here to the boards for exciting news about our other favorite month, March! I'd loooooove to get a group of us together for that this year. It's generally pretty tough with spring break and midterms and such, but we will definitely push for it in 2009!

Doing anything once November's over?

I haven't been on the forums a whole lot, but it says under "Attention Monroeville Wrimos" That it was your last Nano meet. Is anyone doing anything once November's finished? Like TGIF party?

Hey guys, just popping in really fast to mention that I saw a few green bars in one of the posts... that means you crossed 50k, but you didn't send your stuff in for verification! If you didn't verify already, DO IT QUICKLY, as there's only a minute or two left to do so!!!!

(And I don't know the official policy on changing your time zone to allow you to verify after our time zone ends! So copy and paste your word count stat!)
Git 'er Done!!!!!

Hey everybody, just a little motivational post to get you all working these last 30-some hours!

Remember, YOU CAN DO IT!!! Pittsburgh is the greatest city on the earth, and we've got the greatest writers in the NaNo world! Just put your nose to the grindstone tonight and tomorrow, and I KNOW there are so many of you out there that can cross the finish line!!!

Anybody who is over 20k at this moment: dig in and GET THERE! You are closer than you realize!! I don't care if your characters begin reciting the phone book to each other, you can totally cross 50k by midnight tomorrow!!

To all of you over-achievers who are already at 50k, I'll stop being totally wicked jealous right now to say a big giant CONGRATS!! You have done a fantastic job, and in March, we will all go through the stress of a contest month again together editing these monsters :)

And don't forget, win or lose, there's the fantastic TGIO party coming up!! It'll be (most likely) Wednesday at the Spaghetti Warehouse down in the Strip. I just have to make a little phone call tomorrow to finalize things, but just think: you can gorge yourselves on pasta and that delicious sourdough bread for an evening to get over the inner guilt about all of those characters you killed in the last pages! (They forgive you: they know their deaths were merely sacrifices for the greater word count ;)

So, in closing:
1) GET IT under 50k-ers! We are ALMOST THERE!
2) ROCK ON already-winners! You rule! :)

The End of November Gets Me All Weepy,

Sorry I can't make tonight's meeting as promised, but I'm having financial issues.

So.... next Wednesday, ie, our last NaNo meet at Borders Monroeville if I remember correctly, I've got something nice to say "thanks" for the ideas and friendship!

Small drinks are on the house! Just tell me what you want and I'll order it for you from our fine baristas at SBC!

Come Write With Us Tomorrow!

Okay, based on the few responses I got, we will have our last City Write-In tomorrow night! :(

Monday, November 24
Squirrel Hill Eat n Park on Murray Ave
8pm-11pm
(I'll try to get that table in the back so Ayako can use the plug ;)

Wednesday is still Monroeville, per the usual.

As of right now, it looks like our Rocky Horror outing may have to be postponed. I totally forgot about that whole 'going home for Thanksgiving break' thing. They do it every month (last Friday night), so we will definitely do it at one point or another!

Meeting Monday....

Okay, just a suggestion, but would anybody like to do something later on Monday, instead of our typical 6:30-9? We could do, say, 8-11? I *think* we could still be at Caribou, unless people would rather go to Eat n Park in Squirrel Hill. I know they're usually very forgiving of people showing up and sitting around for 3 hours at a time in the evening (or at least all the waitresses made me *think* they didn't mind me sitting around there in college ;).

What does everybody think?

And keep pushing those word counts; you're doing a great job, everyone!!!

Food for Thought...

Hey everybody, how's your word count?!? :)

That aside, the FINAL WEEK is almost upon us... crazy, huh? Seems like just yesterday we were all sitting around going, 'so yeah, I think I kind of sort of maybe have a smidgen of a plot idea....' But here it is, down to the last nine days (I'm counting today as a full day, since it's only 7am - and yes, it is cruel for your friendly neighborhood pharmacist to have to work 8am-8pm on a Saturday), and so let's really get that final push to secure our Champion Word Counts and Winner Certificates!

My question, then, is this: I know many of us are students, and therefore potentially leaving the Pittsburgh area for Thanksgiving break (although also potentially coming into the city, also). I had initially scheduled a write-in for Tuesday night in Oakland (probably Caribou again), but I'm wondering if it would be more convenient to people to do it on Monday instead. If I remember correctly, Pitt lets out on Tuesday for Turkey Day.

The other two events I was planning to host this week were a Saturday last-minute-cram somewhere here in the city (possibly the 61c, since I bet it won't be as crowded as normal), and then Friday night at midnight, my lovely friends are participating in the Rocky Horror Picture Show screening at the Oaks (don't worry, I can drive at least three other Cityfolk who need rides), and I promised I'd try to get together a NaNoWriMo group for that.

So, please respond and let me know:
1) Would you be more likely to attend an Oakland write-in on Monday 6:30-9pm, or Tuesday 6:30-9pm?
2) Would you come to a Squirrel Hill or Oakland write-in on Saturday?
3) Do you want to attend Rocky Horror as a group Friday night? (Unfortunately, this one is ages 17+ as it's a midnight showing.)

I'll update everyone on the final word tomorrow evening.

And since I'm stuck working all weekend, write some extra words for me!

Oakland People, This Friday (Nov 21)

Is anyone interested in meeting up to write this Friday? I'm thinking Carribou Coffee. I'm free all day Friday after 2, so we can either do the standard 6:30-9, or we could meet up earlier if you're interested.

Lemme know, 'cause if no one wants to meet up I may try for a sleepover with a friend instead (who gives me beautiful plot ideas and who would order us pizza from Antonio's which is on the way to her place)
Where To Write This Week

Hey all, just popping in for a brief moment to remind you about this week's write-ins:

Tomorrow, Tuesday, November 18:
Monroeville Barnes & Noble
6:30-9pm

Wednesday, November 19:
Craig Street Kiva Han in Oakland (hopefully either the upstairs part, or that big room off to the side)
6:30-9pm

Thursday, November 20:
???
If you'd like to host a write-in somewhere, ANYWHERE, please please please let me know! The month is halfway over now, so we could really use some group-support :)

Also, if anyone is looking to get together this weekend, please let me know where and when. I know some of you guys were talking about the Squirrel Hill Barnes & Noble - name the time and date, and I will add it to the Google calendar immediately (it's my weekend to work, so I unfortunately won't be able to join you).

And one last thing, a friendly reminder that if you haven't already: BACK UP YOUR WORK!!!!!!!!!!!

Save it to a disk, e-mail it to yourself, upload it to your blog: anything! Just make sure it's not in only one place. You've come this far, so don't let your precious words be lost forever!

Oh, and by the way, since I don't say it enough, awesome work, Pittsburghers!!! If my half-delirious mental calculations are correct, this year, we may very well have the highest number of winners the city has ever seen!!! And if we can get at least... 100 winners in the greater Pittsburgh region.... I'll wear something really embarrassing to the TGIO party!! :)

(Later, when I've had some sleep and am not in the middle of two fourteen-hour shifts, I may amend that number ;)

Hope to see you all this week, and keeeeeeeeeeeeeep writing!!

Something to Get Us Talking...

Well, there are only two of us here so far at Caribou Coffee (if you're here and hiding, come find us!), so I thought I would procrastinate my word count a bit more by posting a talking thread here. So, without further ado, I'd like to know....

What is your first sentence?

So that I'm not cheating, mine is:

If the first week of freshman year was any indication, that whole line about college being the ‘greatest years of my life’ was obviously invented by someone way, WAY cooler than me.

What's yours? :)

Weekend Goal

I'm setting a weekend goal for myself. I have 36.5 K words right now. I want another 4.5 tonight (or more) and 5 k both Saturday and Sunday, leaving me with the 50k. Possible? Yes. Going to happen? Maybe. But I'll sure as hell work hard!

Anyone else wanna post weekend goals here? You know, to try and keep yourself stuck to it ^^

And GOOD LUCK everyone! Come on, keep the words coming!
Event: Squill B&N Write-In! :D

Hey guys! :D There's been a lot of interest in the week thread about doing one of these, so let's set one up!

In case people are curious, the Squill Barnes and Noble can be found here: http://storelocator.barnesandnoble.com/storedetail.do?store=2579

When we actually have a date and time decided on, we'll call B&N ahead of time to let them know we're coming (and so as not to freak some poor bookkeepers out). Plus, this one has a Starbucks cafe inside *yum!* , where we'll be doing our writing.

Everyone who's interested in doing something like this, please post times and days this week (or in the upcoming week) that are good for you. If you need a ride, also post that and hopefully we can get you connected. :3 I'll do my best to keep this post updated with all the responses for times.

I'll start: Fridays and weekends are best for me: after 7:00 pm Friday, anytime Saturdays after 3pm, anytime in the afternoon on Sunday, and I'll be taking a bus, so I'm all good.

To quote the previous discussion:

Ayako wrote:

I'm good weekends,
Tuesdays past 12
Wendensday evening past 6
Friday after 2 works

Hope we can make this work! I'd love to get to meet other crazed writers.

Kiddy Table

Hey, how many of you out there are only 20 years old or under?

I know that there are a lot of college students out there, but what I really want to know is--is there anyone like me who's 18 or under? Anyone (like me) who this is their first year because they were too young to do this in previous years?

No, I'm not asking because I'm a pedophile (even though you shouldn't trust anyone when they say that, as all peds claim that they are not (then again, people who are not peds say that to)) but to see if there's any one else out there who's young and inexperienced and a bit intimidated like me.

Think of it as... I don't know... Needing to know that you're not the only one who has never jumped of the high dive whenever you do it for the first time.

----------
<3I'm through accepting limits, 'Cuz someone says they're so<3

Another Thing To Ponder....

I terribly fear that we are arriving at that point in the month where we begin to get frustrated, and feel burdened with our novels and having to sit down with the thing every night to work on it. So, in order to keep things lively and energized, I'm going to keep posting these talking points for everyone to get involved! (If you have a good talking point idea, feel free to share it!)

Today's topic is:
What is your MC's theme song?

(Slightly in honor of the fact that I saw the new James Bond movie today, and who has a more well-defined theme song than that guy?? And while we're on the subject of 'well-defined,' I think I only need to say two words here... Daniel Craig... and oh, alright, perhaps a third word, which of course would be yum. Oh, my sincerest apologies to all the mens reading this board who are irritated with this line of reasoning ;)

Anyway, my characters don't have a well-defined theme song yet, so I'll wait to post my response. I suppose my male MC, who has been hired (more like enslaved, I guess) by Death to do his killings on a personal level (cheery, eh?) should have the theme song of "Don't Fear the Reaper." Although I guess it would be hard to be intimidating with all that cowbell...

So, share away!!

No Really, I'm Going To Break 10K This Weekend,

So without further ado, I'm giving you all fair warning (funny how much more in charge of my life I feel just by having a half-assembled Ikea desk and an internet connection!), so you had better be there:

Commons Room of the Cathedral of Learning on Pitt Campus
12pm-3pm, or later, if we still have ideas and Ayako still has battery power (ha. hahahahaha. who am I kidding? can we take up a collection to get this poor girl a battery? :)

PS, I'm going to bring a DELICIOUS surprise!

I'm (Mostly) Back & This Week's Events

Hey all, sorry for the (unintended) hiatus! Long story short, when we signed with the company, our moving truck was *supposed* to arrive between November 3 and 7th... Once he had our stuff in his possession, the mover said the 7th (for those keeping score at home, they took our stuff from LA on October 25th), but he called on the evening of the 6th to say, 'Oh, remember the 7th? By that, I meant we were going to delay it two more days unitl the 9th! Hope you didn't plan on having a life for those two days!' This led to lengthy commutes from my parents' house in the North Hills to my job in Wilkinsburg, and furthermore, a lack of reliable computerage for even longer (we had to push back Comcast's installation, my 45-minute commute home took away that half hour I usually spend checking e-mails, etc... yech).

All of that aside, we are officially in our home, albeit without an internet connection for another day (sorry to whatever neighbor whose wireless I am borrowing presently!), but we got my desk set up (and a funny story about that one... note to all prospective movers: if your moving company decides to disassemble your IKEA desk, make sure you secure the screws from them before they have a chance to lose them!), and I can dig into the novel tonight and update all of you lovelies about where we will be this week.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, November 11:
Caribou Coffee on Forbes Ave in Oakland, 6:30-9:00pm
I will be there, hopefully with that big ol' table and a power strip!

Wednesday, November 12:
Borders in Monroeville, 6:30-9:00pm
Again hosted by the lovely Fanelia

Thursday, November 13:
location: ????
We tried the Cranberry B&N last week, but only Jack Frost and I made it out there.... Any suggestions about where to go this week? I won't be able to make it, as it's my week to work Wed/Thurs, but please, if anybody is willing to host, shoot me a private message, and I'll spread the word for you!

Saturday, November 15:
location: ???
It's my weekend off, so let's do something! How does the Beehive in the South Side sound? Or the Cathedral of Learning again? (You guys have to let me know how that went last week! :) I'll update the definite location later this week, but plan on a 12-3ish write-in on Saturday for sure.

And that's it for now! The Google Calendar site is being a bit sketchy at the moment, but I think it's taking my updates. Keep checking there and here for the finalized events of the week, and happy writing!

Thursday, November 13th Write In Reminder!

Hey everyone,

Just a reminder that I'll be hosting a write-in at the Panera Bread in the Cranberry Mall. That's the one near the Carmike Cinema, to which I've linked with a crazy-long URL below. I hope to see you there!

HEY ALL YOU PITTSBURGHERS

Hey, guys.

Hate to be a bother, but with NaNoWriMo coming up in (oh god) 33 days, I was wondering if it might be a good idea to just at least start talking to each other, maybe introducing ourselves... I don't know if we have a regional organizer or anything, but I really want to know if I even HAVE anyone else around here to write with. So hey, I guess I'll start.

My name's Corey. I'm a 19-year-old student at the University of Pittsburgh. This is my first NaNoWriMo, so it'll probably be pretty tough for me. I'm usually a sci-fi/fantasy writer, but lately have been taking a fiction course that has, thus far, given me a lot of short story work. Some of my favorite writers are Orson Scott Card, Lian Hearn, Neil Gaiman, Nick Hornby, and Max Brooks.

I hope to hear back from someone soon.
Back to schoolwork!
SCBWI meeting on Nov. 15

I'm an eastern PA resident who is thinking about making the drive out to western PA for the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators conference on Nov. 14 and 15. Have any NaNoers been there or planning on going? Just wondering if it is work making the 5 hour drive or not. Any and all opinions welcome!
Nano via AIM

Since we are all sooooo spread out and not everyone can make it to all the events, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in a PGH wrimo chat room via AIM? We could do sprints or just chat about our novels. (I am stealing this idea shamelessly from the nano lj community.) If you are interested, let me know either by responding here or by IMing me at TheRealWonderElf on AIM. Also let me know when you're available/when you'd want to do sprints, etc. I'm sure more than one person could run a chat room so we can all participate even if our schedules don't match up.
An Offering -I want your prayers guys!

So, last year, on November 11 a very beloved guy I used to know killed himself. His name was Bryce. He was just an acquaintance of mine, but he made a huge impact on all the lives around him. Even as a college sophmore he'd visit our highschool and was friends with even the freshmen there. He played a huge part in helping our Drama Club (I say our, even though I no longer attend that school...) and he was a wonderful addition to our Choir. He was enrolled in ROTC and wanted to become a teacher for preschoolers or kindergarteners.

I know this is off topic, but if you guys are relgious, I think it'd be nice if we would al (who are religious) offer our prayers for him and his family today. Loosing him was a really harsh blow.

Requiuum in Pacem, Bryce.

And thanks to all who take the time to read this and say a prayer.
And I will look at these scars and shove my despair aside, and forthwidth shall come a grand total of 100,000 words!

Week Events!

Hey everyone, it was great to see so many people out this weekend at the write-in and Kick Off Party! I'll be sending Fuel & Fuddle a thank-you card since they were so gracious in taking care of 20 hungry writers (and learning how to use the register's 'separate checks' function for the first time, too!).

I know the site's being all wonky still, so hopefully this will post, and hopefully you will all get it. Just wanted to give you all a brief reminder of this week's write-ins (with possibly more to be scheduled, so stay tuned :):

Tuesday, November 4:
Monroeville Borders
6:30-9:00pm
Hostess of the Evening: Fanelia
(note: this will be a good time to get your copy of No Plot, No Problem, as I understand people have been having some trouble getting it within the city - the lovely Fanelia has ordered copies specifically to have at the Monroeville write-ins!)

Also, don't forget to vote tomorrow, if you haven't already!! If you bring your voter ticket stub to any Eat n Park in the Pittsburgh area, you'll get your coffee for free!!

Wednesday, November 5:
Cathedral of Learning
6:30-9:00pm
Hostess of the Evening: Ayako

Thursday, November 6:
Barnes & Noble in Cranberry
6:30-9:00pm
Hostess of the Evening: so far, me :)

As I said, there may also be some other ones stuck in as the week goes on. I think some ladies were discussing the Cranberry Barnes & Noble again on Saturday, and some other ladies were discussing something in Fox Chapel on Thursday, so as soon as I get more details, I'll keep you all posted!

Remember, check the Google Calendar for the dates, times, and locations of everything. That, at the very least, has not been crashing every six minutes like this forum ;)

I Promise I'm Working On My Word Count During Halftime,
fox
----------
possible titles for my 2008 novel:
I Love You Too, Wait, You're the Guy Killing All the Other College Students?
Why Can't I Just Meet a Nice Boy Who Isn't Enslaved By Death?
I Knew Signing Up for that Spirit Healing Class Was a Bad Idea
