*Kick-Off, Night of Writing Dangerously, and TGIO info* [sticky]

Hello, fellos DFWrimos!

October is finally here!!! We can start planning our novels and our events with frenzied abandon!

Synthetic_Jesso is in negotiations with The Coffee Haus to let us have the Night of Writing Dangerously all-night write-a-thon there, in the Arlington area. Those of you in far-flung remote locations might want to think about planning your own all-nighter, but hopefully Arlington will be central enough for most of us to have one huge get-together.

We need to plan the Kick-Off Party; the way I envisioned this, to spread out the driving, we'd have the Kick-Off in Fort Worth and the TGIO in Dallas, or vice versa. Does that still sound good to everyone? (That way, no matter where you are - unless you are in those far-flung remote locations - everyone get to have at least one event "close to home.")

Should be flip a coin to see if we're in FW or Dallas first?

Give me locations! Last year we met at the Ol' South Pancake House in FW (however, I believe we were not entirely impressed with the service... several members expressed dissatisfaction with that choice) and Two Rows in Dallas (I believe we did not have any issues with that establishment). Usually we try to meet somewhere where there is food, but it doesn't have to be a restaurant - a coffee shop will do!

Also, do we want to have the Kick-Off on Thursday, Oct. 30th or Friday, Oct. 31st? Should we do it the first weekend of November (Sat the 1st or Sun the 2nd), even though that would cut into our precious writing time? Or do you want to meet the last weekend in October (Sat the 25 or Sun the 26)?

Please give me your input!

Thanks!
:) Criss.
[STICKY] Last minute push?

Anyone else care to meet somewhere for a "Last Minute Push" late night session on Friday Nov 28 or Saturday 29? Others could meet earlier, but I wouldn't be able to arrive until around 11 PM or a little later. We could go to 2 AM. (Kind of like one we did last year at the IHOP in Southlake.)

Could give someone the push they need to win! :D

Good luck, and we'll see you at the finish line!

[Sticky] Looking for NaNo Rhinos!

Alright, guys, the poll is done and we are the NANO RHINOS. I am still amused by this turn of phrase.

Now, we all need to work a Rhino into our novels. If you can do it without your characters visiting a zoo, then you get extra points. If the rhino is named Nano, you get extra extra points. Once November starts, I hope to see this thread fill up with excerpts of novels containing rhinos. For now, how about some catchy slogans?

DFW NaNo Rhinos- Charging to Victory!

Maybe? Any other ideas?
[STICKY] *WRITE-INS*

Post write-in info here! Recurring write-ins will be added to the calendar.

Please limit your postings to this thread to write-in time, date and location. If you have questions about the location or event, or want to comment on attendance or how cool that location is, please PM the poster or start a new thread for that write-in/location. We want to keep this thread easy to read!

Remember to include the name of the venue, the area/city, street address (for those of us who depend on MapQuest to go anywhere), and the time and date. You can post weekly write-ins or one-time events; if you're heading out to a coffee shop and want to invite others to join you, feel free to post that too! (But please remember to limit posts/replies to write-in info, not comments about someone else's post.)

The UNT libraries will once again be supporting National Novel Writing Month by having a Kick-off Party, daily and weekly write-ins and a TGIO party.

The Kick-off is currently scheduled for Thursday, October 30th at 5:30pm in the Cyber Cafe in Willis Library on the UNT campus.

We are looking into daily lunchtime write-ins in the cafe, as well as evening weekly write-ins around Denton.

I'll try to post new events as they are decided here, or you can check out http://nanomonthly.meetup.com/81/ for all the dates and places.

What a great NaNo!

This has been a great NaNo! It's been fun working with everyone trying to get to 50K. We may not have made the top 10, but 13 is very respectable out of more than 400 regions.

As we wrap up NaNo, I wanted to offer a place where you can continue working on writing pursuits throughout the year. I'm a member of an online forum where writers gather to work on different writing projects. It's a password protected area so members can share part or all of a work in progress for feedback without the danger of loosing future publishing rights as material is only viewable by members. Our membership is open to anyone, regardless of genre or format preferences. So whether you wrote 100 words or 100K, feel free to check out the forum:

Congrats again on another great NaNo, and I'll see you here again next November when we once again go looking for the finish line!

A different style of Thanksgiving?

Anyone doing any out of the ordinary for their Thanksgiving meals? My brother-in-law is apparently doing a Thanksgiving of Indian food. I don't know that I've ever had Indian food before, so I'm excited. I hear its typically spicy. I do love spicy food so I'm pretty excited.
Finished 50K, What Changed, What Worked, What Didn't?

I thought this would be tons of fun because I have seen so many posts about how much people's ideas have changed as they wrote. I know it happened to me. FYI I'm writing a YA Novel.

The Beginning:
Story was mostly about the protagonist's "coming of age" tale. For extra emphasis his birthday is actually the last chapter of the book. His passage was to be brutal too: he would break bones, twist ankles, be chased, almost freeze to death... oh the beauty.

Currently:
Most chapters haven't changed in the grand scheme of the plot, the protagonist just woke up on his birthday in the Faerie Realm and finally gets a breather of his own. I still have 3 chapters left, but his life will be smooth sailing for the rest of the book. Oh, and to ease the worried minds, the magic of the Faerie's was able to heal all his ailments. ;)

What is shocking is how the side characters have seemed to bring themselves to the center stage. There are two of them and they only have a combined 9 chapters through their viewpoints (5 on the first, 4 for the second), but I think I like what they are doing more than the protagonist. In the beginning there was no rescue scenario, but now the two have to rescue their previous Headmaster who was overtaken during the course of the book.

It's all very exciting. Who else had things change drastically during their 50K journey?
----------
Irving Writes!

Well, at least one person in Irving does, anyway. I've moved from Rowlett to Irving since last NaNo. Anyone else here? *listens for crickets*

I can and do walk to La Madeleine and Starbucks on MacArthur (between 114 and Royal), and will be writing in probably both places random weeknights and weekends. I'd love to have company! La Madeleine has many electrical outlets and isn't teeming with people, so I'll probably go there more often. Also, their coffee is cheaper. ;-) The downsides are ... their chocolate croissant is delicious, and they close at 9 on weeknights.

Anyhoo, I'll post on here whenever I'm planning on going out and about to write!

I'm totally jazzed about NaNo this year, as I'm trying something drastically different from previous years. Since my erotic novels never end up very erotic :-P I'm not even pretending to write one this year. (It will probably be my most SCANDALOUS yet!) I'm writing an entire novel based on a clever notion a co-worker and I had one day after our boss's boat got stolen and I had a hard time finding a parking place at a shopping center. :-)

Is it time to write yet?
Can't we beat Boston?

I was just looking at the Word Count Scoreboard (Under Fun Stuff). Did you know that we're only 31,643 words behind Boston? That's less than one novel! Surely we in the great D/FW in the great state of Texas can beat Boston, Mass! We're less than a novel away from them!

I bet if we have a couple of people who haven't updated wordcounts in a while update their counts, we just might can pull ahead of them!

(Maybe we can start a battle with them and show them we're the better region ;)

Keep writing, and I'll see you at the finish line!

To kill the bad guy or let him go free?

Hmmm...

Well, I'm within 8000 of the finish now. I didn't get much done yesterday because I crashed. But I'll get there.

The thing I'm still trying to figure out, though, is will my bad guy die or will he live to battle another day? The way my story is, it could go either way. Either way could set this story up for a series, but the interesting thing about letting the bad guy live is that he has pretty much the same abilities and power as the MC. That's one reason I'm thinking of letting him get away, though this current plan is foiled.

Still not sure which way I'm going to go.

Oh, and to really make it interesting, the BG is the MC's brother. :D

Anyway, it won't be long and I'll be seeing you at the finish line!

50,000 Done And Waiting On Verification To Open Up

*falls over panting and out of breath*

I made it again this year! I crossed 50,000 at 9:45pm tonight, limping and struggling all the way, but the tale is actually finished. I actually finished 9 days sooner than last year, AND I got the whole story down this time. I don't know how cohesive it is, but that's what December is for to figure out. Now I just need to go back and edit it and fluff some things out and give it a title.

Who else has made the finish line?
Jessica Pearson, I am calling you out for BATTLE

Okay, so you know how Matt Wallace and Mur Lafferty are arch-nemesises? Or whatever the plural of arch-nemesis is?

Well. I was thinking about it, and who has always caused me the most pain and suffering when it comes to writing? Who's wrath do I fear, who's challenges do I attempt to crush under my feet, who battles boldly against me in word wars year after year? Who constantly torments me to write when I'd rather do anything else? Who's a complete jerk about making sure I hit my quota?

You.

So I've decided to declare YOU, Jessica Pearson, my Writing Arch-Nemesis. I am posting it to the forums because that way it is COMPLETELY OFFICIAL.
Help printing winners certificate

I wanted to print my certificate through Office Depot so I could get nice paper and make it look official. The problem is I can't get it to save with my name and book name on it. Everytime I try, it doesn't do it. I tried saving with different names and all that and it still comes up blank.

Will I just have to write it in myself after I get it printed?

Arlington Peoples!

Hey Arlington people! What is up?

Remember last year, when we met at Coffee Haus every Thursday and Saturday, and it was totally AWESOME? We need to do that again. What nights work for everyone? I'm thinking Tuesdays and Saturdays this year, since I have class Mondays and Wednesdays.

Also, I'm trying to work with the owner of Coffee Haus to set up an OVERNIGHT WRITEATHON. It would probably happen on a Friday night going into Saturday morning. Who here would be able to come, so I can get an idea of the numbers to try to talk the owner into doing this?

And please please PLEASE go to Coffee Haus as an alternative to Starbucks as much as possible! They are having hard times lately and have had to cut back their hours and lay off some people. I really don't want them to go out of business, because it is a completely awesome and laid-back place.

I know we had a post about Arlington and that's all straightened out, but I don't think I will always be able to swing driving to Coffee Haus. Anyone interested?

Hi everyone!

I'd like to take your attention away from writing your own awesome novels, and point it towards what I hope will be an amazing success when it comes to picking up some money to donate to NaNo this year.

Later on, I will post a link in this post, which will lead you to the first of a number of articles I shall be publishing on Associated Content. I will (eventually) receive payment of $1,50 per 1000 pageviews, and every single penny I'm making that way with the NaNo Novel, will go straight back to the good people of NaNoWriMo!

I would really appreciate it if all of you good people would subscribe and tell your friends as well, and help me get all these little pennies together this year!

Anyone else talk in their sleep.

So I'm curious. Has anyone else been told they talk in their sleep? If so, do you remember what you were dreaming about? I have this funny story from an ex-roomate. She was up late one night reading, and I was asleep in bed. Suddenly, she says that I said clear as day, "You son of a b!^(#." She looked at me confused, and I continued, "You're going to pay for that." She actually thought I was talking to her until I said, "Charge!" Then she realized I was talking in my sleep. Funny thing is, when she told me about it the next day, I had no idea what I was dreaming about. I had been told before that I mumble in my sleep, but it was just incoherent babbling. This was the first report that I had of actual coherent sentences.

Anybody else with a funny story like that?
Plano in the NaNo house!

Hi, everyone... I'm In Plano. Anyone else in Plano doing NaNo this year?

I'm trying to challenge myself and writing in a totally different genre, like I did last year with my fictionalized memoir (which I did not have fun with and just kinda left it in its binder since last year). This year I'm writing historical fiction. What about y'all?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2004 - Daniel In The Lion's Den (crime/mystery)
2005 - Two Women and a Girl: EGG, MAT, and MSG (crime/mystery)
2007 - Finding Emma Jane (fictionalized memoir)
