<0> Challenge 2008 -- The RULES!

Rules for the 2008 Challenge: Team Lushguin v the State of Maryland

And please read the highlighted points, even if you've done the challenge before--they're key to participation

Eligibility
• Texans: You must live within 60 miles of Austin or Houston. You may not come from another city that has its own Regional Lounge.
• Marylanders: You must live in the state of Maryland.

Sign-ups
• Notify your challenge coordinator (Breca_Halley in Texas or Tidewaterbound in Maryland) by midnight on November 3 that you want to participate---THIS MUST BE DONE VIA EMAIL ONLY—PM’s or posts do not count.

• You must provide your challenge coordinator with a valid email address. During the challenge, you must respond to any requests from your challenge coordinator within a maximum of three days so we know you aren’t missing in action.
• Your challenge coordinator will provide a “word count thread” -- so post in THIS thread--Challenge 2008 -- The RULES! to track word count. Participants will post ONCE to this thread when instructed by the challenge coordinator. When everyone has posted, the thread will be locked. Which means respond to THIS thread--JUST ONCE--so we can track your word count as we run continual tallies

Updating Word Count
• You must update your word count at least once every five days. If you are unable to update your count, contact your challenge coordinator.
• During the course of the contest, we may ask that you post your word count more frequently.
• You must input your final word count by midnight on November 30. After midnight, you will no longer be able to update your count.

Scoring
• You may drop out of the challenge at any time up to midnight on November 15 without affecting your team’s count.
• Only the official word count from the locked “word count thread” on the NaNoWriMo website will be considered when computing the final score.
• After midnight on November 30, the challenge coordinators from each team will drop the lowest score from their respective counts. They will compute the average score for all remaining competitors.
• The team with the highest word count average will be the winner.
• The challenge coordinators will compare results, and when both coordinators agree, the results will be posted on the NaNo boards.

Trash-talkin’
• Each team will have a clearly labeled “trash talk” thread. The Lushguins trash talk thread will be in the Austin Lounge. Trash talk is to be posted ONLY to the trash talk thread and should remain in good fun and within the bounds of good sportspersonship.

Our God-like powers
• MLs decide what “good sportspersonship” means.
• We reserve the right to remove folks from the competition for any violation of the rules and guidelines listed above.
• MLs are the final authority in any dispute or question about the rules.

Remember It’s All in Fun
• In the heat of competition, we sometimes forget it’s just a game. If you have a concern or question about anything regarding the competition, please contact your challenge coordinator before you post.

To sign up for the Lushguin Team, email me at with the subject line "CHALLENGE," and include your NaNoWriMo username somewhere in the email.
CONGRATULATIONS Houston!

On your 29.8% win rate! I did the math using the author search. But I that is counting anyone with home region set to Houston. If you counted only those who submitted a count this year (active) I'm sure it would be closer to half. Way to go you guys!

Southwest Region Writing Meet-ups

Guess I'll start this up...for us out SW of town.

Personally, I'm in Sugar Land, but everyone SW, feel free to arrange meet-ups, etc. here. Last year a few of us met up at Coffee Groundz (for the SL crowd), but that, unfortunately, is closed now.

I tend to write now at The Teahouse (formerly It's a Grind) at 4727 Sweetwater Blvd, Sugar Land, TX

http://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF-8&oe=utf-8&rls=com.mandriva:en-US:off...

They have bubble tea, free wifi, and plenty of places to sit (and plug in your laptops). Hope all of you are well and are ready to embark upon another voyage into the writing unknown!
Word Count Question

Hi,

I was hoping someone could help with my question.

I went by my MS Word count and had 50,149 but when that thing totalled it showed 50,115. Dang, I'm glad I wrote more than 50k.

Thanks so much!
North afterparty

All right. I wanna do a party, but will not be able to make it to the citywide TGIO - at least, not from Dallas. So I'm gonna hold one for the North Side and anyone else who wants to come.

Panera - Woodlands Mall
Thursday, December 4
4pm-close

If you want to come, just drop by and say hi. Bring excerpts if you so wish, but it's mainly just a celebration of insanity's end.
----------
------
"Matt, I think Jeremy'll be joining us."
"Why do you say that?"
"Well, I told Erica that if she was dating someone, we'd make room for them on the trip...Damn it, stop laughing!"
"Sorry, Jeff, but that's funny."

Hi this is Philosopher the ML for Corpus Christi TX

You guys are an inspiration to us with your soaring word counts. Some day I hope to get the level of participation you have but until then we're not doing too shabby with our "per person" word count if I do say so myself. I may be tempted to strike up a per person rivalry lol. With the stakes being that the ML has to take on any writing challenge... hmmm could get interesting.

For now I wish you all luck and a better week two than you might have expected. Feel free to drop us a note on our forums.

Everyone is welcome to come to these write-ins, even though they are in the loop. I will be at most of them with my baby laptop, trying to kill the last ten thousand words!!

Your mom's! Ha, ha. Yeah, nothing for this day but try to get in no less than a thousand words! Also, I challenge you to make your characters eat the same food you did for Thanksgiving... whatever they are doing in your book. Also work in any family discrepancies or Hallmark moments. Regional challenge!!

Friday, November 28, 5 pm (or as early as you want to get there!)
Brasil, 2604 Dunlavy St
Onion Creek Cafe, 3106 White Oak Dr
North Area Write-Ins

Well, it was disappointing for Elephande and I to be the only writers at Panera's last night. We had a great meeting anyway. Elephande, you are an inspiration and know your Novel will be awesome! Hope to see others this Tues. at Panera's...let's not be left out in the cold NORTH AREA!
F2F Writing Groups

Now that we are in the final hours of NaNo 2008, I wanted to ask a question I've had since the beginning of NaNo. Someone mentioned early on being a member of a Face to Face Writing Group (F2F) in the Houston Area. I'd be genuinely curious about what's out there.

The nearest one I've found (for me) is The Woodlands Writer's Guild. A quick Google search will turn it right up. I've done some serious thinking about joining a writing group or even a professional organization (RWA). My local chapter of RWA meets about a half hour from my house. They also have several online special interest groups, which look interesting.

For the most part, online writing groups appeal most to me because I don't have to be on anyone else's clock. If I get up and start commenting/participating about 5:00 a.m., whatever I contribute is there when the other people wake up. Sometimes, though, I think I'd like to meet some other writers who live near me--if I could fit it in to my life. :D

Anyway, there's my question. I hope I haven't broken any rules by asking it.

P.S. I'm genuinely sorry I wasn't able to meet the North Group at Panera. I've had a killer month--medical, legal, family. It has all happened. I managed to get my word count and win NaNo, but there were days it was the last thing I wanted to do.
----------

The Home Stretch - The Final Push ~

Houston has written 8,298,802 words so far. We have one day left. Let's make it to 10 Million! We can do it! Gotta get back to my novel FTW!
Write! Write! Write! Write! Write!
(get off the boards and Write! - the boards don't disappear till next October 1)
Sunday - write all day! There is also an area-wide write in posted by Telephonesnow in the thread called Last minute write in's (all areas!) Push for as many words as you can squeeze from your remaining energy tomorrow! Personally I have to write in excess of 5,000 words tomorrow to win but I'm gonna do it!
You can too!
Best luck and see you at the TGIO Party next week! (Details soon!)
Houston! You're invited to the Austin TGIO. Come on down! (er.. over?)

It's the Fifth Annual Fabulous Fantastical Whoop-de-doop Thank God It's Over and We're Still Standing, Bloody But Unbowed, Austin NaNoWriMo Party and Laugh-A-Thon!

What? A Party!
When? Saturday, December 6, from 7-10 p.m. (or later)
Where? Austin Visual Arts Association, 3705 Home Lane, Austin 78705
This is a small building, mid-block, on the east side of the street. Home Lane is just south of 38th, 1.5 blocks east of Guadalupe, in the Hyde Park neighborhood. The map insists this is on Cedar Street, but actually it’s on Home Lane. At least the arrow is pointing in the right place.
Who? Anyone who registered for NaNoWriMo 2008 and has written at least 500 words, plus guest(s) (13 years of age or over). Shy persons are especially encouraged to attend..

RSVP please to lazym Please include your NaNoName and indicate if you are coming solo or with a guest. Also, if you have been accompanied on your November journey by a look-look (the correct term for "plush toy" or "stuffed animal"), they are welcome at the party.

PROVIDED: Basic party supplies and starter food (ice, water, some liquids, some munchies, cups, plates, and utensils.)

YOU BRING:

A munchy or liquid – anything you like, including beer or wine. Party food is great, and so are veggies, fruits, non-alcoholic beverages, and other healthy stuff.

Please bring a PRINTED excerpt or brief synopsis of your book (Anonymous is OK.) We like to hang these on the wall for folks to peruse during the party.

A $1-$2 donation per person, to be divided between the AVAA and the NaNoWriMo cause. (Optional and anonymous)

Cash to purchase raffle tickets ($1 each or 6 for $5) if you are so inclined.

If you are collecting Remarkable Feats, don’t forget to bring your card. These cards were handed out at the kickoff and midnight write. I’ll also have a few backups for those who weren’t at these events. The person with the most feats wins a prize!.

CHALLENGES – COMPLETELY OPTIONAL

Come dressed as a character or object in your book, carry something your character would carry, or wear a hat, silly or serious.

Read a short excerpt (4 minutes) from your book, or allow someone else to read it for you. This is not as terrifying as it sounds, and it’s good practice for your future book tour.

PARKING
Carpooling is encouraged. There are about 15 parking spaces in the private lot on the northeast corner of 35th and Home Lane. Ignore the "towing enforced" sign and drive on in, then walk north to the building. There is additional parking on the side streets. Let lazym know if you need handicapped parking. There is a space right beside the gallery that can be reserved for this purpose.
If you prefer to take a bus, check out Capital Metro.

West Area Write-Ins

As I recall, last year we had write-ins at the Barnes & Noble at Westheimer @ Voss/Hillcroft, Panera Bread on Highway 6 near Westheimer and the library in Katy. Personally, I like Panera the best ... lots of tables. There's a new stand-alone Starbucks near there but they don't have too many tables, although they do have a number of armchairs and sofas. Any preferences as to days and times for you guys?

Any last minute write-ins?

Hey guys-
Wondering if there's anyone wanting to do a last minute write-in this weekend. I'm off with no plans but to write Friday, Saturday, Sunday. I live in the Woodlake area, but I'm willing to drive into the Galleria, Heights, Downtown/Midtown, SugarLand areas.

Anyone got any ideas? I tend to go to the Borders by my house alot (Gessner and Westheimer) because it's big with lots of tables. Thinking about going to Empire Cafe on Friday though. Haven't been in a long time.

When: All day Saturday (9:30 a-whenever)
Where: Panera Bread, Woodlands Mall

This is in the far north, but anybody who wishes to make the trek can come up. Basically it's a whole day of fun, food, drink and writing.
----------
"Matt, I think Jeremy'll be joining us."
"Why do you say that?"
"Well, I told Erica that if she was dating someone, we'd make room for them on the trip...Damn it, stop laughing!"

Hi guys! Here is the tentative schedule for meetings both before and during November. If there are any updates or add-ons, I will post them here, so if you plan to associate with the Innerloop group (whether by living here, working here, or driving here because the city is just that cool, I would highly recommend subscribing to this thread for any updates.

If anyone else plans to be writing somewhere on a weekly basis and wouldn't mind company, post below where and when you'll be noveling so others can join you.

I am not dead

I am so sorry for not being on the forums more, or not able to make one friggin write in this year *sobs* I am so busy and this week I have compounded on my already stressed schedule a sickness that has brought me down onto my knees. Sleeping 11-13 hours per day, working 8, packing, and yes, writing when I can.

I am exhausted, this year is out to kill me. :)
Southeast Area Writers & Write-Ins

Living out 45 south has its benefits; we've got one heck of a group of writers out here. For the past four years I've been going to write-ins organized by our co-ML SweetMelissa and they're always well attended and FUN! There's nothing better to spur you on in making that 50,000 word goal than the sounds of fingers typing.

This year Melissa and I are going to be spreading out the write-ins all over the area so you should be able to find one close to home and save some gas. We are also going to focus on organizing at locally owned businesses to support our local economy, but the big chains and local libraries are also going to feature in our picks.

If you have a suggestion for a write-in spot please PM it to either me or SweetMelissa and we'll find a good day for it to host a write-in.

Finally, if you're in the Southeast area (45 S outside the loop including League City, Friendswood, Webster, southern Pasadena and the Clear Lake area) post a shout-out in this thread and introduce yourself.

Welcome and Shout Out

HELLO, HOUSTON!!!!!
And WELCOME to the 10th Anniversary of the challenge we call NaNoWriMo!

My name is SweetMelissa - and I am your fearless Captain. This year Houston has a 2nd ML - the tech-whiz who brought us The Houston Information Page last year - ChrisMacG. Please feel free to contact either of us with any questions or great ideas for coordination and working as a team in the great city of Houston. Our Google Map from last year still has all the locations of coffee shops everyone suggested last year but if you have found a new great place to write, PM ChrisMacG and he’ll add it to the site. Please include info on when you’ll be there noveling so others can join you.

I'm so excited about the NaNo season this year!

Here’s an overview of the month of November ~
Kick-Off Event: All the Houston NaNoWriMo participants get together to meet each other, get fun ideas and goodies to help make it though their noveling challenge. We’ve got some great door-prizes too. I’m working on location but this event will take place the weekend of October 25 or 26.

Midnight Write-in: Traditionally there has been a group of hard-core NaNoWriMo’s (and I’ve been there twice) who start noveling at the stroke of midnight on November 1st. This event will take place on the 2nd floor of Katz’s Deli on Westheimer because they never close. There are usually lots of Halloween activities going on the same night and yes, you’re welcome to come in costume.

November 1st Write-in: This year November starts on a Saturday so almost everyone will be able to use the time to write all weekend.. We’re going to divide up into areas of town – There is a huge group of writers in West Houston (Katy, Sugarland, MoCty area); an Inner Loop Group; a Clear Lake / South Houston Group; and a group in North Houston (Humble, Spring, Woodlands area). We’ll be getting together in small groups at branch libraries in your area for all-day write-ins all around Houston. Also, we’re offering a PRIZE for the most words written in 48-hours called the 48-Hour Frenzy! So use that first weekend to get a great head start on your novel!

Half-Way Par-tay: On November 15th we take a break from noveling and get together to have some fun. This event is still being planned so I’ll e-mail everyone with more details on time and place later on.

Turkey Skirmish: This year we’re resurrecting the Turkey Skirmish at my house. We change Black-Friday to Write-Friday the day after Thanksgiving. This is a pot luck write-in. Bring your Thanksgiving leftovers to share with everyone, and your laptop and write all day. This is a good time to catch up if you’ve fallen a little behind during the dreaded Week 3 and bolster your spirits.

TGIO!! Thank God Its Over Party!: This is a party! No more writing! Only Congratulations We Made It! This is a pot-luck party - BYOBeverage and a treat to share, all ages, bring your significant other, parents of Young Writers welcome. We will have a location nailed down for this party before November begins but the date for this event will be Friday December 5th. We’ll give out prizes and folks will have a chance to read a short excerpt of the novel they’ve just written.

Also new this year, if you are a Twitterer, I’ve set up a HoustonWriMos Twitter profile you can follow. If you follow this Tweet you’ll get a new word every day to try to incorporate into your novel as well as occasional encouraging tweets.

Unofficially, I want to have a Got Plot? Brainstorming Session on October 18th to flesh out some of the details of your novel idea or to get noveling ideas. Check the Houston Information page for details on this event as it approaches.

Writing a novel in 30 days can be intimidating but I assure you it can also be done. Come to the events and on-going write-ins, meet other writers in your area. WriMo’s who have done this for several years always have lots of good ideas and suggestions for how to make it through and succeed. This is a fun and busy month. I can’t wait!

----------
take care
love & e-hugs ~ M

Anything going on tomorrow close to UH area?

Hey guys,

Considered it but didn't get involved with the area people last year or finish my novel(a connection?). I don't see anything going on close to where I am but I'm geographically challenged so I'm open to some correcting if I need it. I'm just wondering if anything is happening in the next few days with the 48 hour frenzy around my area, thanks, or in the next few weeks of November.

Also if you're a UH student on or near campus maybe we can work something out there too. The Library is always fun but perhaps hard to differentiate from fun and study, haha.
