Hailing from San Marcos!

I hail from San Mars, home of the San Martians and Texas State University! Primarily I affiliate with the Austin Penguins, but I will be hosting a write-in every Saturday of this crazy venture. Last year it was held at the Coffee Pot and will likely be there again, but I will post an official time and location when I get everything ironed out. Anyone within driving range is welcome to join in the madness with me!

Anyone from my neck of the hill country?

Austin TGIO party - you are invited!

It's the Fifth Annual Fabulous Fantastical Whoop-de-doop Thank God It's Over and We're Still Standing, Bloody But Unbowed, Austin NaNoWriMo Party and Laugh-A-Thon!

What? A Party!
When? Saturday, December 6, from 7-10 p.m. (or later)
Where? Austin Visual Arts Association, 3705 Home Lane, Austin 78705
This is a small building, mid-block, on the east side of the street. Home Lane is just south of 38th, 1.5 blocks east of Guadalupe, in the Hyde Park neighborhood. The map insists this is on Cedar Street, but actually it’s on Home Lane. At least the arrow is pointing in the right place.
Who? Anyone who registered for NaNoWriMo 2008 and has written at least 500 words, plus guest(s) (13 years of age or over). Shy persons are especially encouraged to attend..

RSVP please to lazym

Please include your NaNoName and indicate if you are coming solo or with a guest. Also, if you have been accompanied on your November journey by a look-look (the correct term for "plush toy" or "stuffed animal"), they are welcome at the party.

PROVIDED: Basic party supplies and starter food (ice, water, some liquids, some munchies, cups, plates, and utensils.)

YOU BRING:

A munchy or liquid – anything you like, including beer or wine. Party food is great, and so are veggies, fruits, non-alcoholic beverages, and other healthy stuff.

Please bring a PRINTED excerpt or brief synopsis of your book (Anonymous is OK.) We like to hang these on the wall for folks to peruse during the party.

A $1-$2 donation per person, to be divided between the AVAA and the NaNoWriMo cause. (Optional and anonymous)

Cash to purchase raffle tickets ($1 each or 6 for $5) if you are so inclined.

If you are collecting Remarkable Feats, don’t forget to bring your card. These cards were handed out at the kickoff and midnight write. I’ll also have a few backups for those who weren’t at these events. The person with the most feats wins a prize!.

CHALLENGES – COMPLETELY OPTIONAL

Come dressed as a character or object in your book, carry something your character would carry, or wear a hat, silly or serious.

Read a short excerpt (4 minutes) from your book, or allow someone else to read it for you. This is not as terrifying as it sounds, and it’s good practice for your future book tour.

PARKING
Carpooling is encouraged. There are about 15 parking spaces in the private lot on the northeast corner of 35th and Home Lane. Ignore the "towing enforced" sign and drive on in, then walk north to the building. There is additional parking on the side streets. Let lazym know if you need handicapped parking. There is a space right beside the gallery that can be reserved for this purpose.
If you prefer to take a bus, check out Capital Metro.

Want a calendar, anyone?

Okay, so I'm technically not allowed to live in this regional forum yet, but I'm going to post because there's no posts up here yet. I'm actually a San Antonio Wrimo, but I am probably going to move to San Marcos next fall when I go to college. So next year, I'll be at the write-ins and socials in San Marcos (most likely).

Anyhoo, I posted this in my SA region, but thought I'd offer it here as well. I'm trying to see if anyone likes my calendar. If you do, feel free to print it out. : ) If it's terrible, please tell me why you think so, because I want it to be nice so I can post it up in a few more places on the site.

Thanks!

****************************************************

I created a calendar for NaNo'08. It has the minimum wc goals for the day, a nice quote, and several inspiring pictures. The quality is not perfect because it was made on ... well ... erm...*coughpaintcough* I am not qualified to work on anything better as of yet. But here's the calendar: http://www.flickr.com/photos/30970609@N05/2902573684/

The pictures represent the different weeks of NaNo, and they include:

Week #1. a picture to symbalize NaNo's geekiness.

Week #2. a picture of writing "like a rabid ferret." (Yay for the race that is upon us.)

Week #3. a picture for your mid-nano blues.

Week #4. a brilliant picture of the purple winner's bar and golden crown. : )

Please let me know if this calendar is nice (or terrible) because I'm trying to figure out where I will post it on this site next, and I want it to be nice for all the wrimo's of the world. If you like it, feel free to print it out. If there's a problem, let me know.

Stephenville Area WriMos

I know this is a late question, but I forgot about this forum. Anybody here a Stephenville area WriMo? I know of two so far, but they aren't exactly in Stephenville. I'm looking for people in the Glen Rose, Grandbury, Dublin, and Stephenville vicinity. I don't want to not include everybody, but it would be nice if I could host a write in with people who don't have to drive in from Dallas/Ft. Worth. It's a long drive, and I don't like driving it myself when I do go to write-ins.

So, it seems that we have at least a handful of us hanging around in the East Texas thread. So, I figured we might as well see if there is a few more of us hanging out around here.

I just made the short journey from Beaumont to Nederland last week, and I would normally be attending Lamar University if the Hurricane hadn't messed up my paying of tuition.

We could discuss plot points or share in the pain of writers block with others, maybe even get a paragraph or two done.
A call for small town East Texas Writing Buddies

Hey all,
I'm from Jacksonville, Texas and just thought I would see what we could do about putting together a small group of writers here in Jacksonville for NanoWrimo and maybe beyond.

I'm fairly new in town and would be delighted to facilitate a new group if there are those interested. So, nanomail me or add me as a writer buddy and I'm looking forward to meeting other writers in the area.

Best of luck!

Creating your own write-ins

Hello Elsewheres!
I'm the Austin ML and I'm hugely excited that y'all are out there making it happen for yourselves. Since you don't have an ML in each of your cities, I thought I'd share some information that has helped me create write-ins for my region. I hope you also find it helpful. And PM me if you have any questions.

-----------------
If you want to have a write-in near your home or work, you can create your own!
Start by posting in the Elsewhere forum. State your location and propose a day and time. Based on feedback from your fellow writers, take a deep breath, and decide!

Try to pick a time and location that is convenient for others, but don't stress too much about it. It should also be convenient for you.

Scope out the venue ahead of time, if possible, to get a feel for how it might work with a bunch of writers.

Check with the venue to make sure they'll be happy to have you and aren't planning a big event at the same time (it's difficult to write with an open mic going on – or live ponies in the parking lot!)

Tell people how they can recognize you - sticker on your laptop, table-top sign, carnation in your buttonhole, whatever.

BE ON TIME. In fact, be early. Grab a table in as obvious a spot as possible. If you have a friend with you, grab two tables - or bring a sweater to hang over a chair.

If you have a power strip and/or extension cord, bring it to boost electrical access.

Do not be upset if attendance is light. Just schedule another write-in if you want, and keep on keeping on.

During the write-in, if you can stand it, walk up to people who look like they are NaNo-ing and say “hi”. They may have missed your carnation and feared they were all alone.

Tip the servers/baristas well and be exceptionally nice to them.

Ahead of time, you can discuss (or decide) what kind of write-in you want, or ask the Wrimos who show up. Some people come primarily to socialize, some only to write, and many like a combination of the two. Ask (or be alert) so you can suggest a “quiet zone” if necessary.

Some people like to have challenges and word wars at their write-ins – where everyone does a timed writing and then compares the results. Others just hunker down and write. However you do it, it will be great. Happy writing!
