Here is your one stop shopping experience for EVERYTHING related to NaNo in Seattle this year.

If it's your first time or if you are returning, welcome. It's such a fun and exciting time and such a great sense of community. I can honestly say that Nano has changed my life. Not just in the way that I write, but in the people and lasting friendships that I've met through the excitement!

First off, Introductions!
My name is Renda and I am the South Seattle Area Municipal Liasion. We also have Amanda who's been working as a ML for 4 years now who is the North Seattle ML. You may be asking yourself "What's an ML?" We are volunteers who work to make the NaNo experience the best it can be for you! We create and support events such as kick-off parties, answer questions, maintain the forums, run write-ins and so much more! If you ever need anything feel free to contact either of us.

Here are some quick links that you may need:

Seattle Area Events Calendar. A note about the calendar: Anything that says "OFFICIAL" in front of it is something that is being put on my Amanda or myself, but everyone is open to creating write ins and we'd love to add them to the calendar.

If you need anything added to the regional events calender please post in this thread.

That's about it for right now, but as more come up we'll add things to this post. Below is Amanda's guide to creating write-ins. Please read if you are interested! If you have questions about what it takes please contact her or I.

Amanda's Guide to Creating Write In's
How to host a write-in- in 5 easy steps:

1) Find a place in your neighborhood that will be hospitable to wrimos: it should have power available for several laptops (you may choose to bring a power strip with you to aid in this), ample seating, snacks, drinks, food, or coffee, and an atmosphere and staff that welcomes creativity. WiFi is a plus, but not a necessity.

2) Figure out a time and day of the week that you are able to commit to for the entire month; this is key; you are the anchor to your group, you should be there. And hey- it’s only 4 or 5 times, right?

3) Create a discussion thread to drum up interest and answer questions. If you have had any issues finding a place, then the thread can be a valuable tool to see who else in your neighborhood has ideas.

4) Announce the existence of your write-in or proposed write-in in the “Announcing Write-Ins” thread, including within it a link to your thread.

5) Show up on time at the appointed place, write, and have fun.

And really- that's it. Don’t forget to head over to the “ANNOUNCING WRITE-INS” thread and post your info and a link to the thread so that it can be added to the regional calendar.

Post-Nano Seattle Writing groups?!

I tried this last year, and while there was some discussion that were spawned, a group didn't actually get formed.

I'd love to create a post-Nano writing group for Seattle, specifically, the core of Seattle (i.e. downtown, Cap Hill, Queen Anne, Central District, etc). Personally, I don't drive, so a writing group in Auburn wouldn't work for me, unless I was able to carpool with someone.

My book is kinda chick lit, though I'm trying to angle it more literary than most chick lit is currently written. Think more like Emily Barr, not Emily Griffin. I'm open to reading other genres, though I'm not really a sci-fi reader.

If you are interested, please message me and I will get back to you ASAP. I don't want to end up abandoning my novel (like I did last year), and I know having a writing group will help keep me in line, and I'd love to help other writers stay on track, too.

I’m going to be running monthly “Post-NaNo Support Group” in the South Seattle Area on the first Wednesday of the month at the Borders in the mall, starting in January. What I hope to do is use this time as fellowship for writers as well as a chance to match up writer’s who would like to get a partner to read through their novels (as well as any other writing you’d like to share). I’ll go over the details at the first meeting which will be held on January 7th.

Post-NaNo Turbo Challenge

Okay, now that we're almost to the finish line, there are two things we can do when we get there. We can sit back for a well-deserved rest and hang it up until next November. Or we can capitalize on our momentum... and keep going!

The thing is, NaNo-ers are a freight train. It takes a lot of work to get the darn thing going in the first place, but once it's headed down the tracks, it's easier just to keep it chugging along.

Before you think I'm completely crazy (and yes I haven't forgotten about the Holidays!), here's what I propose. NaNo is a hard push, a long sprint. Serious writers are in it for the long haul, so let's do a marathon.

NaNo is one 50K novel in one month. Let's do another in two months. That makes a fairly sustainable pace of 1000 words/day, plus ten whole days of delicious slacking.

And if you didn't NaNo this year or you didn't finish, here's your chance to test the waters at a more sustainable pace.
Two rough drafts will give us twice as many marble slabs to work on later. Twice the odds of having something salable. More importantly, it gives us fifty thousand words more experience in writing straight ahead and leaving our critics in the dust.

So on December 1, celebrate your heart out! Take a couple days off. Put your NaNo manuscript in a drawer and promise not to look at it for two months (best time to edit anyway).

Then open a new file, set a good cruising speed, and kick the adrenaline down a notch. But keep up the momentum.

I submitted my last word count update with just about 15 minutes to spare and then I sat here and watched the countdown like it was New Year's Eve. There will be prizes for word wars to inspire you in short bursts, and lots of insanity and uncontrollable laughter (especially if that Liz Spencer chick shows up) in between times. There might even be prizes for the first non-Dunlin people to hit the 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50k marks (I'm just kidding Dun). If anyone else has some great ideas to reward people in the writing department, let me know.

The wi-fi is free. Bring your ducks. Bring cash too, please, for the ease of the waitresses and bartenders (and don't forget to tip!) If you're going to drink, you best have a legal way to get home -- bus, foot, designated driver.

I'm newly moved to Renton and work in Bellevue, and after a full day's work, making the trek across Lake Washington -- and then back in time for work the next day at 7 am -- seems like too much for me. Not to be big-headed about it, but I remember there was a function before where we could search authors by region by wordcount. Am I the only one who can't get the author search function to work for me? (I set it for "home region - Seattle" and it returns a list of everyone)

Who else in Seattle went for more thank 50k?
