The Silver Hammer
an excerpt
"Oh, dang it! I forgot to put my bag in my locker! I'll be right back," I said to Sarah, not that she really cared. I headed back through the gym where Shawnee was gathering her stuff to leave for the office.
"What are you doing?" she asked curiously.
"I forgot to lock up my bag," I replied, entering the hall that separated the boy's and girl's locker rooms. It was eerily silent as I walked down the long hallway. There were some various offices on either side of the hall, but all appeared to be empty. I was probably the only one in this section of the school right now. Suddenly, a bloodcurdling scream rent the silence. I stopped dead in my tracks, searching for the source of the sound. I turned back to the locker room end of the hall, where I glimpsed a figure in a long black coat rush out of the girl's locker room. "HEY!" I shouted. The figure really started to run now. Before I really knew what was happening, the cloaked figure was gone and I was left staring at the door to the girl's locker room.
There was blood on the handle.
A sick feeling gripped my stomach as I gingerly pulled the door open, trying to get as little of the blood as possible on my hands. I stepped inside and looked around. There, on the floor in front of me, lay a girl. Blood obscured most of her face, but I could still tell who she was. She was Allison Reason, a senior in my Vocal Ensemble class. I had never liked her all that much, but to see her lying there on the floor, covered in her own blood, was too much for me. I rushed out of the room and ran down the hallway to the bathroom, where I immediately threw up. Afterwards, I washed my face in the sink, gathered my composure, and returned to the locker room. As much as I didn't want to see Allison sprawled on the floor, I knew I had to check to make sure she was really dead and not just heavily injured.
"Allison?" I asked as I pulled open the door a second time.
No answer. I walked closer and called her name again. Still, there was no answer. I prodded her still form with my foot. She rolled over onto her side. That's when I saw what had killed her. I felt the urge to return to the bathroom.
The door of the locker room creaked open. "Emily? What's going - Oh my God!" Shawnee gasped. "Did you just-"
"Of course not! I just found her," I replied immediately.
"What is that in the back of her head?" Shawnee came in closer. "Is that-"
"Yep," said I, "it's a silver hammer. Someone sure loves their Beatles references."
