There was a girl sitting at the bus stop, clutching a paper cup of coffee and swinging her legs to and fro. She had long brown hair, and she was only wearing one shoe.
Gill watched her suspiciously as she approached the bus stop, trying not to be too obvious about it. She looked fairly normal, but the lack of a shoe was something of a give-away. Besides, with some people you could just tell- she had that certain air about her, the vague sense that she didn't entirely belong here.
Sure enough, the girl's face lit up when Gill stopped next to the bus sign. She took a long sip of her coffee, her eyes never leaving Gill. Gill tried to avoid her gaze, staring intently at the bus timetable.
“I know you,” the girl said abruptly after a moment. “You're Granny Edge's girl, aren't you. Jilly, wasn't it?”
“Gill,” said Gill. She'd outgrown Jilly a long time ago.
The girl tilted her head to one side. “If you like. Names are important, after all.” Her eyes narrowed slightly. “You look older than I remember.”
“I am older,” said Gill. “I grew up. People do that, sometimes.”
The girl shuddered. She was maybe twelve, thirteen years old. “How horrible.”
