Synopsis: Onion Skin
Everything was supposed to go over smoothly that summer. Sixteen-year-old Juliette Stanley had lined up a job alongside her best friend, Rose Delaney, at the hottest hangout spot in their town, where she hoped to have the chance to ditch the insecure-girl persona inspired by her abrasive mother and start having fun. The first days are magical, but then Rose begins acting up at work, then not showing up altogether, until she’s finally fired and won’t return Jewel’s calls or emails. Jewel channels the rejection from her only friend by diving headfirst into a summer that ends up marked with one-night stand after one-night stand.
Now it’s time to go back to school, and with her mother’s constant back lashing, Rose’s enigmatic silence, and the regrets of summer, more than ever before Jewel longs for someone to accept and understand her. Good thing Jewel’s met a guy—a dreg called Scott Kensington—who might be exactly what she needs… or so she thinks. Forgetting her own worth, Jewel subjects herself to an unbalanced trade of the physical for the emotional.
