PROLOGUE:

They cowered in a corner of the dark, dank room; a man and a woman about to face their end. They huddled together in a last embrace, faces turned toward one another, bodies shaking in unison. Their foreheads touched together, they cried silently, grasping each others heads, not lifting their eyes from the floor.
“I love you,” the woman whispered.
“And I love you,” the man answered. His mouth opened to utter another reply, but he was cut short by the heavy wooden door of the room being thrown open. The two cowered away from the sudden influx of light, the woman hiding her head against her partner’s chest. A man stood in the doorway, an imposing, dark representation of inhumanity. He walked forward with purpose, not bothering to close the door behind him. From this prison, there would be no escape. He pushed the couple apart effortlessly, turning his cold, black eyes upon the man first. Grasping him by the collar, he pulled the man to a standing position, still managing to tower over him. The woman’s shrill cries filled the room as the man lifted her partner’s neck to his lips and cut into the flesh in a single, fluid movement. His lips became coated in the dark liquid, and as he finished draining the limp body, he licked his lips in appreciation, before dropping the body as though it were nothing. Turning to the woman, he smiled.
“I’ve been saving the best for last.”
He grasped her wrist hard, and pulled her up to crush her against his chest. Leaning his head down, he twisted one hand in her hair and kissed her on the lips. Still crushing her to him, he pulled her head to the side by her hair, and placed his lips softly on her neck. Brushing it with his lips, he kissed her neck from her collarbone up to the hollow beneath her jaw, softly brushing his lips against her skin all the way, before scratching her skin with his teeth and licking the first taste of blood from her porcelain skin.
“Yes, this is what I’ve been waiting for,” he murmured, before plunging his teeth completely into her neck. Gasping, she kept her eyes locked on the body of her partner, struggling against her captor’s restraining grip. Her eyes remained locked on him until her vision faded, along with her will to live, and she fell limply against the vampire’s rigid body.
