an excerpt
Belnar strode up to the gate, which was opened for them. Inside, stone homes formed circles around a large, raised structure in the center. People lined the street and cheered as the trio went past. Once they reached the center of the town, Charat'nar dismounted and began climbing the stairs up to the central fortress. Kahri'nar quickly followed suit, Belnar by her side. As they got closer, a group of figures descended from the entrance of the fortress. Charat'nar immediately dropped to her knees, and Belnar dipped her head. Kahri'nar knelt and looked up at the group that was moving towards them.
In the front was a woman with the same dark, curly hair as Charat'nar. She wore a long, flowing dress of green with a leather tabard over top. Her tabard bore the same crest as Charat'nar's, though it was more exquisitely decorated. Around her waist was a belt and the sheath containing a long sword. On her head, she wore a thick band of silver with a single emerald. Her face was firm but kind, and her blue eyes sparkled.
At the woman's left was a man who wore a long, red tunic and leather pants. His tunic bore the crest and had fine embroidery around the edges. His pants were tucked into leather boots with spikes like Charat'nar's, and at his waist, a pair of scimitars were sheathed. His short, dark hair was accented by another silver band, this one with a ruby in the center. His chin was strong, and his beard was cut short. His dark eyes were full of life.
On the other side was a young man who wore a leather jerkin, pants, and boots like Charat'nar's. In the center of his jerkin, a falcon holding a snake in its talons, the holy symbol of Rina'lon, was emblazoned. Over his right shoulder, there was a thick leather strap that attached to a belt around his waist and held a large mallet. His brown hair was spiked, and his blue eyes were bright. He stood straight and tall next to the older couple.
The woman held out a third silver band, this one containing a sapphire and placed it gently upon Charat'nar's brow. "Rise, my daughter," she said. As Charat'nar obeyed, her mother addressed the crowd. "I, Lahrai'nar, Great Mother of all Nar'Tolan, hereby declare a feast be prepared to celebrate my daughter's return." A cheer rose up among the people, and Lahrai'nar embraced her child. "Welcome home, my dear."
