Synopsis: Where Proud Waves Halt
Kilkavan, Ireland, 1826
Where David Kavanagh goes, storms follow, and he wouldn’t have it any other way. The motherless son of a dead Ribbonman, David escapes poverty when a kind gentleman, Liam O'Conghaile, takes pity on him and raises him alongside his own son, Brian. The two boys become brothers instantly, but David’s wild heart and rebellious confidence constantly strains their friendship, especially when pretty Kathleen Sheridan comes into their lives. When tragedy strikes and David is suddenly separated from his home and his friends, he must learn how to surrender his pride if he’s going to survive the storms to come.
Excerpt: Where Proud Waves Halt
“Were you serious,” David asked Brian as they came to their room, “about being respectful? That sounds powerful dull.”
“Sure, you heard the way Uncle Alexander was to my Da tonight!” Brian’s brow was gathered angrily. “I don’t want to be the cause of any more trouble he gives him. And you had better not be, either!”
David nodded reluctantly.
“It isn’t fair what your uncle is doing. Forcing good people from their homes for stupid cattle?” David muttered again, plopping down on the bed dramatically. Brian threw his grammar book at him, and David caught it in his lap. “Something ought to be done about it.”
“Like what?” Brian sighed. “We just promised we’d be good!”
“Your father’s ‘good’ and Alexander’s ‘good’ are two completely different ‘goods,’” David grumbled in disgust. “I don’t want to be Alexander’s sort of ‘good.’”
