Synopsis: Starting Over

Starting over

John stared at the centerline of the road is it clicked by mile after mile. For three days he had driven first north through the San Joaquin valley, to Seattle, at first heading for the Canadian boarder, then east along highway 90 when the radio said there were snow storms just across the boarder. He did not want to get stuck in one place waiting for the roads to clear. John just wanted to get away and keep moving. For the first day and a half he kept looking in the rear view mirror to see if anyone was fallowing him, but by the time he got to Rapid City South Dakota, he was sure that no one was behind him.
When he had to rest, he would stop at the rest areas or truck stops, pulling back behind the parked diesels so he was shielded from the road, a couple hours sleep and he would eat quickly and then head out again, first South looking to see if anyone followed, and then doubling back to the highway again.
John was getting tired again and wanted to shower and sleep in a bed, no armrests poking him in the ribs. No smell of diesel fuel or the screech of air brakes being released as a trucker prepared to hit the road again.
