Eflatun and the Magic Mirror
an excerpt
Rocks exhausted and the sun going down in a pink and yellow haze behind the hills, she went out on to the dock and lay on her stomach to watch the fish. Most of them were tiny little things swimming in enormous schools, and then there were single big fish in no hurry at all. Then suddenly from under the dock there was a great big tail and Effie jumped back. From the size of the tail she estimated that the fish was enormous-and she thought of Julide's scary shark stories. She lay down flat on the dock, hoping it would not see her through the cracks between the planks. She heard thrashing in the water closer to the shore, and then the next thing she saw was two hands gripping the side of the dock. She wanted to run as fast as she could, but thought, oh no, it will catch me and trip me up...and then came the voice, a voice she thought was much too gentle for a shark or a monster “Hey, you!” it said. Effie was curious and had to look. She got on her hands and knees and peered over the edge, ready to bolt if she had to. She was entirely unprepared for what she saw, or rather whom. She involuntarily let out her breath.
He was the most beautiful boy she had ever seen. Only he clearly was not a boy. Or not a human boy.
