Synopsis: The Trans-Neptunians

The life story of a man marginalized similarly to the manner in which Pluto has been marginalized as an official planet, is revealed through two interweaving stories, one story through his own eyes, covering his youth through young adulthood and the second story through the testimony acquired from various witnesses by the daughter he never met, beginning the day of his funeral. Her investigations reveal the apparent circumstances of his life, generally in reverse order, from old age through to adulthood. The stories converge at the climax with the tragic events that led to the daughter's abandonment, revealed through dual perspectives. We close with the apparent miracle at the time of his death which may redeem all. Hopefully!

“It’s a big school, huh?” said Margaret.

Poul nodded.

“And those teachers seemed nice.”

“They won’t be the ones teaching me.”

“I know that.”

They sat in the car in the parking lot. Here and there a student or pair of them walked either toward or from the institution with a book or two in hand or a few strapped together and slung over a shoulder.

“It’s gonna be a long walk,” said Poul. “Do you think maybe you could give me a ride here and back?”

“I was thinking about that. If I get this job at Kreske’s – and uncle Kerry says I’m a shoe-in - It’d be pretty wasteful to drive you way out here and then go back to the store and then back out here again to pick you up.”

“Fine.”

“I was thinking I might even walk to work when the weather’s good.”

“Great.” Poul looked away, out the passenger window. A seagull had landed in the grass and seemed to be pecking away at some kind of debris.

“And when it’s raining or when it’s cold, you could drop me off on your way to school.”

Poul turned his head swiftly. “What?”

“I said, you could drop me off at the store – on your way to school.”

“On my way to school? With the car?”

“Unless you’d rather carry me on your shoulders.”

“Are you serious? I can drive the car to school? That’s boss!”

“Can I trust you to be responsible?”

“But momma, I’m fifteen. The driving age is sixteen here.”

“It doesn’t matter, Poulie. You already got a license. You can drive here.”
