Cursed Rebirth
an excerpt

I ran as fast as I could down the corridor and as I rounded a corner I saw to my horror that she was right on my heels. Her hair seemed to light up and her gold eyes sparkled with a strange sort of fear and determination. What did she have to be afraid of, I thought to myself as I continued running.
Any rational person would have started dialing the phone the minute they had it in their hands, but there weren’t any rational thoughts in my head. I finally remembered that I had the phone in my hands when I reached the grounds. As quick as I could with the bumping and jostling of my running I dialed my father’s number. I prayed for him to have his phone on him. It continued to ring and I realized he didn’t have it with him. I settled for screaming his name. He said he was going to be outside for another few minutes. I had a good chance of him hearing me.
I barely got the first syllable of his name out of my mouth when I heard the strangest, most beautiful sound. I stopped and turned around. The little girl had stopped running. In the evening darkness she had a red and orange glow about her. Her mouth was open and a single note, which sounded like a beautifully sung eight part harmony, was coming from her lungs.
I couldn’t move. I was rooted to the spot where I stood. A large amount of adrenaline rushed through my veins and I started to shake. My mind lost control and nothing else registered in my brain as I died for the first time.
