As all embalmers surely must, Mortimer had learned to live with death. This was not especially difficult for him, for even as a child he had not been troubled by the concept or nature of it. This, obviously, says a little about his character. Day after day, He extracted the one positive thought that could be found in atmosphere of his place of work: at least the dead had no objections to his company. In short, he was rather disturbed, rather friendless, and smelled rather funny.
