Racing Hearts
an excerpt
Katie smiled. That was an upside of knowing a weather presenter, as a meteorologist he was supposed to know the weather slightly more in advance than most people. “Isn’t that what you said last week?”
“There was rain,” he said stubbornly. “It was just over in Ireland rather than here.”
“True, you were only off by several hundred miles,” Katie told him, and smirked.
He glared at her. “One day, Katie, one day you will make a huge mistake in one of your articles, and then I’ll mock you forever. ‘Course, I’ll have to buy one of your women’s mags first. And know how fashion works so I can tell you your article was wrong.” He drummed his fingers on the back of the bench. “Bit too much effort involved in that. I guess I’ll just have to make fun of your boyfriends instead.”
“All right, what’s there to make fun of in Alessandro’s case?” Katie asked. “He was gorgeous, charming, successful, good in bed. There was nothing wrong with him.”
“He’s currently in another continent!” Robert exclaimed. “How is that not wrong? I mean, you finally find a decent man, and you let him go off to Brazil!”
“Well, I couldn’t very well beg him to stay with me, could I?” Katie reminded him. “He’s got a busy career, and besides, I don’t even know if I want to be in a relationship at the moment.” Even if the company had been good. And the sex had been good. And the kissing had been good. And knowing that a man found her attractive was good. And the idea of coming home to someone besides Coco would be good. And knowing there was someone she could always rely on besides family or close friends was good. Someone to share her ups and down with, and someone to share their ups and down with. Friendship and family were all well and good, but sometimes she just wanted that bit more. Someone to crawl into bed with on a cold night. Someone who could wake her up with breakfast in bed. Someone to snuggle with on a lazy Sunday morning.
