CHAPTER ONE: More Comfortable Than A Cardboard Box
As much as I like to believe my mother when she said that “Moving is the ultimate adventure.”, I would love to parry that with “Moving is the ultimate pain on the butt.”.
Literally and figuratively if you wanted me to be specific.
Besides sitting in Anna’s – my mother’s first name - car for an extended period of time, there’s the hassle of logging all our earthly possessions into our new domicile..
“Magdalena,” I removed my earphones so I could hear Anna properly. “I’m starting to think you’re not thrilled about this move...”
“Magda, Ma,” I reminded her for the nth time before continuing. “Thrilled? Why wouldn’t I be?”
“Well, in your old school—“
“It’s passed, Ma. We don’t need to talk about it.”
If my grandmother was still here (God bless her soul), she would have reprimanded me for interrupting Anna. No, I was not taking advantage of grandmama’s absence. The thing in my old school was something I’m not exactly willing to talk about.
Not without a shrink or something.
“I’m just worried about you, hija.”
“I’m fine, Ma,” I went, patting her arm. “You always tell me that worrying produces grey hair faster.”
“Augh. Don’t remind me,.” she said with a laugh. “You’re sure?”
“Positive..”
