Blue Glass
an excerpt
Servants were gathering now, amazed and horrified by his actions. He saw Kuane’s face clearly, distress etched upon it but also admiration…oh, how he clung to that awe radiating from her eyes…
He searched furtively around the room, and located the gold mine—a tray with a few leftover cubes of banana cake. He stole over to it, his throat dry despite the milk he had just consumed. His heart was in his throat, he had never felt this rush of fear and adrenaline before…
Tristan carefully touched the golden cake, picking up one cube. It was as large as his fist, bright yellow on the inside with a darker brown soft top. He could smell the banana, the sweet sugar…
He slowly took a bite, aware that everyone was watching him now, and Kuane, face alight with that respect for him. The cake was so soft, and he heard a beautiful fluffy sound as he bit into it. It was so sweet, so crumbly between his fingers, and for a moment he wasn’t thinking of anything in the world, just that sweetness. One more bite and the whole cube was gone, and he was left satisfied with a full stomach and a great sense of accomplishment.
“See, I…”
His words stuck in his throat as he turned back around. His heart froze, a hammer blow to his chest. Servants were looking everywhere but him, Kuane stood with eyes full of tears. In the center of it all were two guards.
