Excerpt: Dating a Democrat
“Ros-a-lyin.” Shauna purposely mispronounced the Rosaline’s name, bringing me back to the future.”Why don’t you give that back. It’s Kendra’s and it’s none of your business.” Then, under her breath she added, “Otherwise I’ll knock your pretty little fake nose off of your head.” She tried swiping at my cell phone again, but Rosaline’s hand moved quickly, passing it on quickly to one of her three henchmen, Kimberly.
“Awww Kendra. Trouble in paradise?” Her fully glossed lips turned downward into a pout. Behind her, her three cronies, Cassandra, Emilia, and Kimberly both snickered. Kimberly was fiddling with something in her sweatshirt, obviously trying to hide my cell phone down her shirt, thinking that we wouldn’t find it there.
I glowered at Rosaline, trying to make her shake with fear. Sadly, that didn’t work. So, I answered her question. “No Rosaline, there’s not. Brendan just wants to talk to me. That’s all. He probably wants to ask about what we should do for our anniversary. Our one month anniversary is coming up you know.” I glanced at Rosaline, trying to see if she believed my blank faced lie. When she answered though, I could tell that there was no way she believed it.
“Well then, Kendra. We’ll see how you are tomorrow. After your punk faced boyfriend breaks up with you. Just like all of your previous boyfriends.” Shauna grabbed for Rosaline, ready to beat her up. Luckily, Madilyn stopped her, grabbing the corner of her hoodie’s sleeve, and pulling her arm behind her back.
Under her breath, Shauna snarled, “Only I get to call him a punk faced boyfriend.” She then tried snapping her teeth at Rosaline, which made Rosaline jump backward in her seat. I saw Shauna wink at me as Madilyn restrained her from going at Rosaline. Oh Shauna. She was always good for a laugh.
“Eww, that girl Shana just tried to bite me. That is just too gross for words. Come on girls, let’s go before one of us gets rabies or something.” She grabbed her black Prada purse, which was sitting on the bleachers behind me, pushing it over her right shoulder. She snapped her finger, and her three followers followed. Cassandra, Emilia, Kimberly and Rosaline started to trot down the bleachers, swinging their butt as they went. As they walked across, they were stepping on people’s toes, knocking people aside. As they walked into another section, Shauna, Madilyn and I just stared at them.
Seconds after they had left though, Shauna stood on top of the old wooden bleachers and yelled after them. “It’s Shauna, by the way. If you’re going to at least say I have rabies, get it right.” All four of them turned around, swirling on their stiletto heels. I could tell that Cassandra and Kimberly were amused. Each of them had their hands to their mouths, trying to suppress a laugh. Rosaline and Emilia though, were not amused. The people in the bleachers behind them started to grow angry. There were some people in the school who didn’t like these four, and Cassandra, Rosaline, Kimberly and Emilia had decided to stand right in front of them.
While Shauna had their attention, she shouted after them again. “Oh yeah, Rosa-lyin, you forgot to give Kendra back her cell phone. I would give it back to her if I were you.” Her voice trailed off at the end, leaving the rest of the ending to Rosaline’s imagination. She then snapped her teeth again, imitating an angry dog. Even from twenty feet away, I could see that Rosaline saw Shauna’s teeth snapping. She put her hand to Kimberly’s ear, whispering something to her. Kimberly was smiling, then suddenly frowned. As they frantically whispered together, I turned towards Shauna and Madilyn. They were thumb wrestling, waiting for these four to come back with my phone. They both thought they knew Rosaline better than I did, and assumed that she would come back with my phone, out of fear that we would go to the principal and ruin her perfect student image. I sighed, just as my phone came flying at me. I lunged towards it, grabbing it just before it hit the floor of the bleacher. If anything happened to my phone, my parents would be extremely pissed.
However, just as I grabbed my phone, I crashed off of the bleacher that I was sitting on, falling crookedly onto the one in front of me. We had decided to sit three bleachers up from the bottom of the second balcony because our usual first row, easy exit section was already taken. Next thing I knew, I landed on some strange guys lap. I lay sprawled across of him, feeling his strong legs beneath me. Feeling like I was crushing the poor guy, I starting to apologize profusely.
“Oh my god, I am so sorry. First thing I knew, I was grabbing for my phone, next thing I knew I was, well…falling.” I heard laughing from the other side of the bleachers. At once I knew that it was Rosaline, Emilia, Kimberly and Cassandra. I glanced up, looking at the poor guy I had apparently crushed. As soon as I saw his twinkling green eyes, I inwardly gasped.
The guy beneath me laughed. As he laughed, I could feel his abdominal muscles tighten and contract. Oh how I recognized those strong, smooth muscles. More than once had I run my hands over this stomach, tickling the guy behind the green eyes.
