Excerpt: Miss Untouchable
“Lisa!” Amy called after her.
Lisa ignored her.
“What’s wrong with her?” Pat asked Amy.
“Just having a double life complex,” Amy whispered under her breath.
“What?” Pat asked.
“Did you guys see Lisa today?” Jeremy joining them for a moment, “She looks pretty upset.”
“Yeah,” Pat nodded his head, “She was just with us.”
“Amy you don’t look too good either,” Jeremy turned to her.
Amy looked up into her teammates faces, her conversation with Lisa rushing through her head. They all were slightly depressed. She had never heard Lisa say anything more true.
Amy shook her head and slammed her locker closed, “Life sucks.”
She pushed past Jeremy and Pat and started down the hallway. She stared at her feet as she walked, determined to avoid everyone she saw. Her head was swarming the way it had swarmed when her sister had first arrived in town.
Her thoughts were getting to the better of her. She was no longer paying attention to where she was going. She bumped into someone, sending papers flying everywhere in the hallway. The person cursed and Amy let out a deep breath. She bent down to help pick up the papers.
“I’m so sorry, I wasn’t paying attention to where I was going,” Amy apologized.
“I could tell,” the person laughed.
Amy looked up into the face of Miss Nita, her sister. She smiled weakly at Amy as she collected her papers. Amy couldn’t help but note how they had they exact same shade of brown eyes.
Amy hurried to gather the papers. She shoved them in her sister’s hand and turned to leave but something caught her by the wrist. Amy turned to face her sister.
“We need to talk,” Miss Nita told her in Japanese.
“No,” Amy told her in her wave of emotions, “You’re messing everything up. Why would I talk to you? I want nothing to do with you. You were dead to me the second you walked out that door.”
Miss Nita’s face looked pained, “Don’t say that Amy. Please don’t say that. I need to explain—”
“Explain?” Amy asked, “Explain what? The fact that you’re back after seven years? Or why you left in the first place? Or why you are my teacher? Why are you even bringing this up now? You’ve been here for two months already. Why?”
“All of that,” Miss Nita answered quickly, “I’ll explain everything. If we could just get together and talk—”
“No!” Amy yanked her wrist free, “I want nothing to do with you. You are nothing but a teacher to me, Miss Nita. I have no sister.”
“Amy, please,” Miss Nita pleaded.
Amy shook her head and walked in the opposite direction.
“Amy!” Miss Nita called after her.
Amy couldn’t take any of it anymore. She needed air, a lot of air. So she did something completely out of character with her persona, but something as herself she would have no problem doing. She walked straight out of the front door of the school as the bell rang.
