Chapter One

“Guys, calm down. They are just scones.”
“No, it is just a scone. It is just the last scone. And I saw it first.”
“You cannot call dibs on a scone, Pete.”
“I get a blueberry scone every single morning. You know I get a blueberry scone every morning, so you would have had to have known that I wanted it!”
“Well, so did I! And I was first in line, so it is mine.”
“You have no right to my scone, Bob!”
“I am a paying customer! I have just as much right to that scone as anyone else here!”
“But I am not having to fight anyone else for my scone, now am I?”
“What does that even mean, Pete?”
“Oh, I think you know what it means.”
“Obviously I do not, if I had to ask. My gosh, you are just completely irrational.”
Evelyn sighed. It was like this every day. Each morning at exactly 10:40, Peter Collins and Robert Martin would come into the Barnes & Noble Starbucks where she worked, and bicker over the pastries, or the free samples, or pretty much anything else that had a limited supply, and make a complete nuisance of themselves. She had told her boss time and time again to just make more scones, but he had said no, stating that it would be wasteful and careless. Scones do not have a particularly long shelf life, and on the off chance that there were any leftovers, they would have to be thrown away by three due to their complete inedibility and shocking ability to imitate rocks.
