Synopsis: Doctor, Heal Thyself

This is a work of fan fiction. It takes place following the 4th series of New Doctor Who.

After the sanity-draining experience of the Medusa Cascade, The Doctor and his family of companions are more than willing to fade off into the background for awhile. The Doctor is also extremely withdrawn despite his best efforts, considering what he had to do with Donna Noble's mind in order to preserve her life.

Despite his advanced age, experience, and intelligence, The Doctor does not know everything, however. The parallel universe in which he left Rose Tyler with a literal part of himself takes yet another dark turn. John Smith is having a difficult time adjusting to life without a TARDIS and a physical Time Lord mind. Under the pretense of helping, Smith is instead seized by UNIT, locked away, and experimented upon as if he were some sort of lab animal. UNIT then tells Rose he was killed as a result of being unable to live as a Time Lord within his human form.

Rose refuses to believe that her John Smith is dead, but even with Jackie, Pete, and the bulk of parallel-Torchwood to call upon for help, they realise the only person apt enough to assist them in finding human John Smith is The Doctor himself. Yet how will they send him a message? Assuming The Doctor receives a message, they don't even know if he'll agree to help. Not to mention they don't know what sort of experimental horrors John Smith has been subjected to...

Repeated guilt and loss have caused Ten to revert to the roguish ambivalence of his earlier selves. Friends and enemies, old and new, cross paths and attempt to convince The Doctor that it's about time The Universes he keeps saving joined forces and gave him something in return. By so doing, he just might discover he's not the last living Gallifreyan after all...

Martha frowned. She didn't like the idea of those in the medical profession performing experimental surgery when it wasn't necessary. That included aliens as well as human beings. She valued all forms of life. Then she back-tracked a bit.

“You knew my name. Did UNIT tell you to expect me?”

Sutherland pursed his lips and folded his arms as he said, “Well....not entirely.”

Her brow furrowing, Martha inquired, “And what exactly does that mean?”

“It would seem our subject in question,” began Sutherland, nodding toward the man behind the glass, “knows who you are.”

“He...what?” Martha was mystified. Something was niggling the back of her brain...

“It also seems that you two met in the same hospital with the Judoon attack.”

Suddenly, something clicked in Martha's head. “John Smith! He said he was alien, but I didn't know whether or not to believe him. Last I knew, he died in that encounter, because some sort of...thing...Plasmavore I think it was? Murdered him.” Her eyes flew open wide as she continued excitedly, “Are you telling me he's still alive?”

Dr. Sutherland sadly shook his head. “I'm afraid I don't know of any 'John Smith'. The patient in that observatory goes by the name of 'Donald Noble'.”
