Excerpt: The Day That Never Comes
Preface....no, prologue. No, that isnt it either. Eh, whatever.
Have you ever felt deja vu? As in, you know you've experienced this before, but no one else has, and they look at you like you are crazy when ever you mention it? And have you ever felt like an idiot during that brief, or not so brief, time??
Scott woke up in the middle of the night with a start, covered in a cold sweat, panicked and wide eyed. His brown hair was standing on end, and his green eyes flashed as they glanced warily around the room. He gave a sigh of relief as he looked at the clock, noticing the time was 3:15 in the morning, giving one final sweep of the room with his eyes. Everything appeared still in its proper place, but he could not shake the strange sense of foreboding that pervaded the room.
Suddenly, a knock was heard at the wooden door at the front of the room. Scott jumped slightly at the sound that interrupted the silence. Scott's twin sister, both at the age of 15, Adrianne, opened the door tentatively, peering around the door to look at her brother with wide eyes.
"Well, come on in," Scott encouraged, waving his twin into the room.
Adrianne walked in stealthfully and sat down on the edge of the bed, her piercing jewel green eyes flashing with the change in light. Her hair was disheveled and in tangles around her face. "You heard it too?" she whispered intensely.
Scott tilted his head to the side quizically. "heard what?"
Adrianne shook her head. "you didnt hear it."
"hear what??"
Adiranne ignored her brother's comment, staring at the opposite wall. when she turned back to look at him, her expresion was different. "Wait, then why are you awake?"
scot shrugged, not quite getting it. "bad dream." was all he said.
Adrianne nodded as if that all made perfect sense to her, which of course it didnt, not that she would admit it. "okay then," she said.
scott nodded once but remained silent.
adrianne turned to look at her brother again after staring at the wall through the awkward silence that neither of them regarded. "are you okay though?" she asked.
Scott nodded. He had a volelyball tournament the same day, and was apparently losing sleep. "im fine," he said.
Adrianne tilted her head to the side in disbelief. she knew her twin better than that.
"really, im fine. just going to be really tired in about," he regarded the clock. "three hours,"
Adrianne nodded again in comprehension. "sorry i woke you." she said, standing and making her way towards the door that was still open ajar so a sliver of light fell through.
She reached the door and turned to look at her brother again, as if in a farewell gesture. the sliver of light fell onto her face, illuminating half of her frame. the sight looked slightly bizarre, but scott said nothing of it as adrianne smiled slightly and turned back around. she left the room with a single backward glance.
as she left, Scott shivered impulsively. the look on his sister's face was just strange. or, it was strnage compared to all her other facial expressions at this time in the morning. He shrugged it off, though. maybe his sister was in one of her intelectual moods.
Scott sighed audibly and laid his head back against his pillow, trying to get comfortable. he closed his eyes, trying to shake off the disconcerting feeling. after about thirty minutes or so, though it may well have been an hour, time was impossible to keep track of when you refused to look at the clock, he finally fell asleep.
