Synopsis: No Time Like The Present
Austin's day has been a little crazy. On his last day of fourth grade his school bus was attacked by killer squirrels. Befriended by the last of the Time Lords, they escaped and raced to save a starless world, foil the sinister plans of the baddest tree-dwelling rodent ever, and return Austin safely home for summer vacation. Now, that mission accomplished, Austin returns to Virginia 2008 to discover that his family is missing and the valley he lives in devoid of all signs of human life. The whole human race gone as if it never existed.
Excerpt: No Time Like The Present
But this place didn't look anything like the Earth he knew. The mountains were familiar and the trees looked normal – not that he was sure he'd recognize an abnormal tree.
He was sure though, that when he left Earth yesterday, there were no dinosaurs and –
He heard a snap. A twig or branch breaking. Close. Not more than a few feet away. Was it behind him or off to the left?
He clutched a stone in both hands, jumped to his feet and tore off into the darkness, scared to look back.
He leapt through a thick growth between two trees and found himself in a wide open clearing, several times larger than the one the TARDIS came to rest in. Silvery light spilled through the trees and across the tall grass and the moon hung low over the mountains.
He took several steps into the open before he heard heavy breathing coming from behind.
Please be the Doctor. Please be the Doctor.
Austin took a deep breath and spun around, right arm raised high over his head.
The thing was standing twenty feet away just inside the tree line, scaly skin glistening. Mouth open, row upon row of razor sharp teeth around its stubby alligator-like snout. It dropped its head low to the grass, ready to pounce.
"Time travel stinks," whispered Austin.
