Synopsis: The Diary of Ida
Twenty five year old Angelo Remalski never accomplished much in his life. He was working a second-rate job, had a second-rate girlfriend, and a strained relationship with his mother. The lackluster routine of his life is interrupted one night when he happens upon a suicidal teen about to throw herself off of a bridge. When Angelo fails to keep the girl from jumping, he decides that he won't let the chips just fall as they may.
After traveling to the girl's hometown and being turned away by her shockingly apathetic family, Angelo discovers her diary about to be thrown away. In an attempt to connect with another human being for once in his life, Angelo takes the diary and reads it. In it, there lies the life of Mary Short, a young girl whose life was filled with pain, darkness, and very few escapes. Mary's diary also holds a fictional character she created, named Ida, whose life is as bright and optimistic as Mary's is gloomy. With the ever-present threat of Mary's violent family discovering that Angelo possesses her diary (and their troubling secrets,) Angelo discovers the meaning of hope and the spirit of a fighter in The Diary of Ida.
Excerpt: The Diary of Ida
“I’m not coming down.” She repeated.
The girl looked straight at him again, and he could see it all in her eyes. It was as if she was saying “It took me this long to get here, and you’re not taking me down. This bridge is all I have.” There was so much pain and sadness and loneliness in her eyes, Angelo was stunned. He didn’t know how, but he felt as if he knew her. He didn’t know anything about her at all except that her name was Mary and she wanted to go away, but he felt like he had known her his entire life; as if it was all leading up to this moment when he would meet her and look into her eyes and see all these things inside of them. They just stared at each other for a minute, until Angelo was certain that he would do anything to help her. She just looked away again, still crying.
“There’s…” She began to say, but was cut off by a sob. “There’s a letter in my truck. On my dashboard. Would you get it for me?” Angelo didn’t move. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to leave her there by herself. She turned back toward him. “Please. It’s important to me.” Her eyes said the same thing. They begged for him to retrieve it. So he listened.
The truck was parked only about fifteen feet away from where they were standing. The door was a bit rusty and took a bit of force to pull open. The interior was a bit dank and dirty. He looked up on the dashboard and saw a crinkled up piece of paper that had what looked like teardrops staining through.
He grabbed the paper, and as he was pulling his head out of the truck, he heard her say, “I’m sorry, Angel.” He looked up just in time to see her hair fly back as the rest of her fell forward. He ran around the car as fast as he could and threw himself against the rail, trying in earnest to grab her. But it was no use, she was out of his range. He saw hit the dark water, gracefully and broken. The current moved on underneath him, and she didn’t surface. His abdomen throbbed from the impact, but he raced across the bridge to look off the other side hoping to get one last look at her, hoping her head would bob above, choking for air.
But there was nothing but the black river.
