About DarcieShellyLocation: Nelson, BC, Canada Home Region: Age:35 Favorite novels: Anything that stirs strong emotion and connection to the characters and story. Favorite writers: Quite a varied list - Jane Austen, Edward Rutherford, Phillipa Gregory, James Michener, JK Rowling (LOVE Harry), Stephenie Meyer (Go Team Edward!), my son. Favorite music: I don't usually listen to music when I write. I prefer "background" noise, such as the delightful sound of my children arguing over who's turn it is on the video game or the sound of my husband's computer mouse clicking away as he plays his favourite word game. This is my music. Non-noveling interests: All things Canadian. Hockey, beer, skiing, camping, canoeing, raking leaves and shoveling snow. I love to travel, particularly to Europe. I love to read and probably don't spend nearly enough time doing it. |

Synopsis: Mall Rat
Rachel McKenzie is 15 years old and determined to fit in at all costs. She gets herself mixed up in the world of the West Edmonton Mall Rats. It's all fun and games at first for Rachel -- the boys, the parties, the drinking, the drugs.
Rachel's mother, Jean, is beside herself with worry. Her young daughter disappears for days at a time. Where is she going, with who and what are they getting into?
Rachel eventually discovers that the party world she's creating is slowly crashing around her and she decides to get out.
How far will Rachel go and at what cost to her and those who really do love her?
Excerpt: Mall Rat
The kitchen of the three bedroom townhouse they lived in looked out over the parking lot. Beyond the parking lot was West Edmonton Mall, a different world that somehow her daughter, Rachel, had ventured into and become lost.
Jean again found herself standing in the kitchen window, staring out over the parking lot. Her wine glass replaced with the coffee mug that Rachel had given her for Christmas. "World's Greatest Mom" was painted on the side of the cup in the colours of the rainbow.
This was where Jean stood for the past two days until late in the night. Rachel had been missing for 58 and a half hours. This was the third time in as many weeks that her daughter had run away.
