Brief Author Bio: I'm a former English major who has ended up not getting to use my degree much. I've had a few poems and a couple short stories published, and even got paid for a couple of the former, but not in anything with any real distribution. I've been working on producing my own comic for too many years now, and keep running into various issues ranging from lack of commitment to hurricanes that lead pencilers to quit before the work is done. Giving this a shot to try and kick start some creative juices again after being too busy trying to get comic work done, meeting not-writing job deadlines met, and otherwise tilting at windmills to participate previous to this year. |

Synopsis: Dawn of Steam
The year is 1815. England has become the unquestioned preeminent power in the world ever since Oxford invented dirigibles in time to help bring the American revolution to an end. The Napoleonic Wars pitting most of Europe against England and its colonies, with the rest of the world seeking English technology, have just ended with Napoleon dead and the European alliance fractured.
With the war over, George IV's power curtailed by his agreement with parliment that allowed him to marry his Catholic wife, and the war having brought new money and new heroes, and boredom to some of the English old money.
A bet between two gentlemen leads a company of war heroes out on an adventure to explore the remaining unknown parts of the globe, aided by bits and pieces of Oxford's wonders and their own courage and skills. A mix of early-era steampunk meets adventure meets political intrigue in the not-so-entirely different England in the years leading up to Victoria's death and the beginnings of a new age of wonder.
Excerpt: Dawn of Steam
My dearest Cordelia,
You cannot begin to imagine the views afforded by travel aboard these military dirigibles. While the first day was quite difficult in many ways, that time has passed, and now I am finding myself quite at home aboard this wondrous vehicle. I spend what time I feel I can waste holding tight to the rails outside and admiring the grounds below, though we are now quite near the coast and can see the choppy waters in the distance. Until one has had this amazing perspective, it is hard to imagine the true meaning of “as far as the eye can see”, for there are times the ground below seems to stretch on forever, and entire villages and even towns seem tiny by comparison to the sheer scope of vision offered by being so high above our beloved home. We were not able to travel particularly close to London, to my regret, in part because we have only so much in the way of supplies, but I can only imagine it would be particularly breathtaking seen from above and out of the crowded paths and shops. Even writing of the experience seems insufficient and even a waste of time many times, for words cannot accurately capture the splendour of the greatest nation on Earth seen from Heaven's own view of it.
