Synopsis: Best One of the Best Ones
Set in an alternate timeline, a greenhorn interviewer goes head to head with a woman who was once second-in-command of a guerilla cell in the South.
Excerpt: Best One of the Best Ones
"They found the boat, burned and looted, on one of the little barrier islands. Ossabaw or something? God, ten years and it all flies out of your head. Guess that’s what prison does to you. "
She hasn’t mentioned her incarceration before this, but I know about it. It’s just unnerving to see her so clam about the whole thing. I’ve been warned about interviewing excons, about all the buried issues and the sensitivity I need to display. But she’s not at all like that. I suppose she’s different. Not a murder or a rapist or a thief but something else. ‘Prisoner of conscience’ is the paper’s favorite term.
