Excerpt: How the World Ended

The dogs died first
I saw them on the tv, the old cathode ray model that my parents moved into the basement when we got our new flat screen. Next to the tv cabinet stands a pile of cardboard boxes that we found in the cupboard, filled with tins that must have been down here since the eighties. I don’t know how long it takes tinned food to go off, but we guessed that it was less than twenty years. Surely sticking food in a can doesn’t preserve it forever? Or does it? The eternal tomato soup, given forever life after death. Now I’m starting to wonder if I’m going to be sharing what’s left of the future with the Jesus Christ of tomatoes.
