Excerpt:
They started with the oldest, each child was taken into a room by the Mister and nothing was heard for ten minutes. When they came out of the room, the kids had strained expressions on their faces, the girls looked as if they had been crying and the boy’s faces’ were bright with anger. When Bell came out, I knew it was my turn next. I looked to Jack for comfort, but got nothing, he was unwilling to meet my gaze.
The door handle twisted open again and the Mister stepped out and called my name from a clipboard. I hadn’t felt this kind of fear since I had arrived at this place, and that was saying something. I stood up from the bench we were all sitting on and walked to the door with shaky knees. “What are you so worried about?” he asked me as his hand clapped, a little too roughly, on my shoulder as he steered me into the room.
