The Infamous Four Series: Sociology 101: Life in the Rich Lane
an excerpt
Mrs. Goldstein ran around the store piling Mary's lap up high with clothes of every kind imaginable without caring about price or whether her daughter could see well enough to manuever her wheelchair. She couldn't.
"Mother! How do you expect me to get around the clothes racks! Ouch!" Mary had just hit her head on a clothes rack. She then proceeded to back up into a mannequin. "Mother! If you are going to overload me, then you are going to have push me. I'm not going another centimeter until you do!"
"What Darling? I'm over here! I have more clothes for you!"
"You didn't hear a word I said! You have to get me!"
"Mary! Now! I can't hold all these forever you know! My arms are about to break!"
"And when they do," Mary muttered under her breath, "I'll be sure to not retrieve them lest the poor fool of a doctor figure out how to annoy me further by reattaching them."
A fellow shopper came up behind Mary, and without even asking pushed her over to her mother, at an alarmingly high rate of speed. Mary didn't know whether to yell 'slow down lest her wheels fall off', 'Stop! I don't even know you!' or 'Thanks!'.
Mary said in a loud enough voice so her mother would be sure to hear, "Thank You oh so very much! I don't know what I would have done, with the mannequin and clothes rack attacking me and me mother so deaf in the brain! Oops! Did I say brain? Silly me. We all know she doesn't have one. I most certainly meant ears!"
"Now now dear. It can't be all that bad! Your mother is just preoccupied, as usual."
Mary wanted to just kick herself! That was the Queen Mum. As much as she hated her mother, she'd never admit that to the Queen of Snots! She tried in vain to not let her face turn red. She might as well have painted her face red for all the good that did. Her mother, however, was so self-absorbed that she didn't even notice the Queen Mum, let alone the conversation that had just finished. Mary was shocked! The Queen Mum, however, wasn't shocked, as she always knew Mrs. Goldstein left much to be desired and never was worth bothering with. Indeed, the only reason why the Queen Mum invited Mrs. Goldstein to the parties at all was because of Mr. Goldstein's ability to start new businesses that make billions practically overnight.
