Als ik al ben ingeschreven op de website, heb ik dan ook automatisch een account op de JSP website en andersom?

Nee, helaas moet je appart inschrijven op beide websites. Je mag wel twee keer dezelfde naam en paswoord gebruiken.

Kan ik mijn account van de website gebruiken op de website van het Jonge Schrijvers Programma?

Helaas zijn de twee websites niet met elkaar verbonden op dit moment, dus oet je twee keer registreren. Hopelijk hoeft dit volgend jaar niet meer.

Ik heb een account van het vorige jaar. Moet ik me opnieuw inschrijven?

Nee! Log in door middel van je bestaande gebruikersnaam en paswoord. Dat is alles. Als je probeert een nieuw account aan te maken en je krijgt het bericht “Address and/or user name have already been taken” dan komt dat omdat je al eerder geregistreerd bent.

Terugkerende deelnemers zouden niet op de “Sign Up Now” optie moeten klikken, omdat je zo een nieuw account aanmaakt, en dat is niet wat je wilt!

Ik ben mijn paswoord en/of gebruikersnaam vergeten.

Geen probleem! Het enige wat je nodig hebt is het email adres waarmee je ingeschreven bent. Ga naar de log in-pagina en voer je email adres in op het Los Password formulier. Het volgende zal dan gebeuren:

1. Een “New Password Request” email zal automatisch binnen enkele minuten naar je toegezonden worden.
2. Open deze email en klik op de link.
3. Een ander “New Password” email zal je toegezonden worden die zowel je gebruikersnaam als je *nieuwe* paswoord zal bevatten. Wanneer je opnieuw inlogt met je nieuwe paswoord kun je je paswoord weer veranderen naar wat je maar wilt.

Wanneer je geen bevestiging emails ontvangt van ons systeem, controleer je spam folder. Als je een lijst hebt met toegestane adressen of een andere manier hebt om je email systeem te vertellen welke email geen spam is, voeg dan noreply@nanowrimo.org aan deze lijst.

Ik ben mijn paswoord/gebruikersnaam vergeten en ik heb niet langer toegang tot het email adres waarmee ik mij heb ingeschreven.

Kan ik mijn gebruikersnaam veranderen?

Nee, helaas kun je niet je gebruikersnaam veranderen.

Kan ik mijn oude gebruikersnaam/account verwijderen?

Nee, hoewel we periodiek de gebruikerslijst opschonen door accounts te verwijderen die langer dan een jaar niet bezocht zijn. Te zijner tijd wordt je oude account dus verwijderd.

Hoe en wanneer kan ik me inschrijven? Moet ik inschrijfgeld betalen?

Je kunt je het hele jaar inschrijven! Om je in te schrijven voor de komende National Novel Writing Month, klik je op de knop “Schrijf je nu in” bovenaan deze pagina (bij de punt van het potlood van de hardloper), en vul het registratieformulier in.

Kaboem! Je bent nu officieel ingeschreven voor National Novel Writing Month.

Er is geen inschrijfgeld nodig voor National Novel Writing Month, maar we vragen financieel solide deelnemers om iets bij te dragen aan de kosten voor webhosting en administratie. Omdat we een nonprofit organisatie zijn, is deze donatie aftrekbaar voor de belasting! De grootte van je bijdrage is geheel aan jou.

Hoe kan ik mijn roman laten verifiëren als ik met de hand schrijf?

Roep de Luddite Clausule op!

Je schrijft 50.000 en laat dit controleren door iemand die je vertrouwt. Door middel van bijvoorbeeld een Lorem Ipsum generator lever je een bestand ter grootte van exact jouw aantal handgeschreven woorden in bij de word count validator.

Hoe lang mogen mijn profiel-items zijn? De naam van mijn woonplaats islang en ik heb een lange lijst met biografische gegevens.

Lokaties kunnen 64 tekens lang zijn.

Signature banners mogen niet meer dan 500 pixels breed en 100 pixels hoog zijn.

Kan ik het email adres wat verbonden is aan mijn account veranderen wanneer ik ingelogd ben?

Ja, je kunt je email adres veranderen op de Edit Profile pagina.

Waar is de reactie die ik op het forum geplaatst heb?

Hier kunnen verschillende dingen aan de hand zijn.

1) Jouw reactie is er wel, maar nog niet ververst. De website gebuikt een cache van 15 minuten om de druk op de server te verminderen, dus wacht even of hij verschijnt.

2) Jouw reactie is verplaatst. We verplaatsen regelmatig threads naar het juiste forum (voorbeeld: een vraag over personage motivatie is beter op zijn plaats in Plot Doctoring dan in Character and Plot Realism). Sommige threads ovetreden onze regels of bevatten reacties die onze regels overtreden, en we kunnen het mogelijk ook verplaatsen naar een administratied forum voor controle.

Je kunt de forum moderator benaderen als je hebt gezocht in je abonnementen, de forums of andere forums waar het zou kunnen zijn en je het niet kunt vinden.

Waarom worden onderwerpen met meer dan 500 reacties gesloten?

De manier waarop ons Content Management Systeem werkt is dat hoe meer reacties op een bepaald onderwerp er zijn, hoe trager de website wordt.

Dankzij enige instabiliteit tegen het einde van het seizoen 2007 limiteren we onderwerpen tot maximaal 500 reacties. Je mag natuurlijk een neiuwe thread started met hetzelfde onderwerp, maar om deze site te laten werken moeten we de oude threads afsluiten.

Wat gebeurt er met alle romans die voor NaNoWriMo geschreven worden? Is er al één gepubliceerd?

Romans die tussen 25 en 30 November worden geüploaded voor verifiactie en overwinning worden geteld door een computerscript en dan automatisch verwijderd. We lezen en bewaren geen enkele ingezonden roman en NaNoWriMo auteurs behouden alle rechten over alles wat zij schrijven gedurende het evenement.

Heel veel winnende romans zijn geschreven gedurende NaNoWriMo. Onze statistieken:

1999: 21 deelnemers en zes winnaars

2000: 140 deelnemers en 29 winnaars

2001: 5.000 deelnemers en meer dan 700 winnaars

2002: 13.500 deelnemers en ongeveer 2.100 winnaars

2004: 42.000 deelnemers en bijna 6.000 winnaars

Hoe kan ik een foto uploaden?

Wanneer je ingelogd bent, ga naar “Edit Profile” bovenaan de pagina. Onder “Account Settings” is de optie “Upload Photo.”

Klik op deze link en gebruik het formulier op de volgende pagina om je foto te uploaden.

Fotos mogen maximaal 100x100 pixels groot zijn, of kleiner dan 72dpi, en minder dan 50kb.

Je kunt elk foto editing programma gebruiken (zelfs het in Windows ingebouwde Paint) om je plaatje te verkleinen.

Hoe kan ik een uittreksel van mijn roman, samenvatting of kaft plaatsen, redigeren of verwijderen?

Deelnemers kunnen een uittreksel, samenvatting en kaft van hun NaNoWriMo roman op de website plaatsen door in te loggen en naar “My NaNoWriMo” pagina te gaan. In het linkermenu zie je dan een “Edit Novel Info” link staan.

Het plaatsen van uittreksels is niet mogelijk tussen 1 Oktober en 1 November.

Hoe win je NaNoWriMo en wat zijn de prijzen?

Om NaNoWriMo te winnen hoef je alleen maar 50.000 woorden te schrijven voor middernacht op 30 November. Ieder jaar zijn er talloze winnaars. Er wordt geen prijs uitgereikt voor “Beste Roman” of “Snelst Geschreven Roman.” Alle winnaars krijgen een officiëel “Winnaars” web icoontje en een certificaat.

De echte prijs van NaNoWriMo is het manuscript zelf en het opwindende gevoel van het bereiken van een ambitieus creatief doel. En natuurlijk de €1.000.000,-.

Die €1.000.000,- is natuurlijk een geintje!

Het echte winnen gaat zo: vanaf 1 minuut ná middernacht lokale tijd op 25 November tot en met de laatste seconde vóór middernacht lokale tijd op 30 November, kunnen alle deelnemers die meer dan 50.000 woorden hebben geschreven hun winnende aantal laten controleren op deze website. Wanneer je je roman upload naar de Word Count Validator, wordt je overwinning officieel, je wordt vernoemd op de Winnaars Pagina, en je wordt direct naar de geheime plek gebracht waar je het winnaarscertificaat van dit jaar kunt ophalen. Daarnaast wordt ook je aantal-woorden-staat paars gekleurd.

Om te winnen moet je eerst controleren of je een manuscript hebt geschreven dan minstens 50.000 woorden lang is. Log in op de website, klik op Edit Profile en blader naar beneden tot aan het stuk genaamd Word Count Validator. Kopiëer en plak je gehele roman in deze box en klik op de “Submit” knop. Bereidt je dan voor op je prijzen.

We begrijpen dat je terughoudend bent om je hele roman te uploaden naar zomaar een website, zelfs naar één die zo charmant is als de onze. Als je Microsoft Word gebruikt, is het eenvoudig om je roman door elkaar te husselen voordat je hem upload, zonder dat je aantal woorden in gevaar wordt gebracht.

1. Open het bestand en maak een nieuwe kopie van je roman met “Opslaan Als...”
2. Open het Zoek en Vervang dialoogvenster (Aanpassen -> Vervang).
3. Klik op “Meer” om het venster uit te breiden.
4. Vink “Gebruik Wildcards” aan.
5. Voer het volgende in in het “Vindt Wat” veld: [a-zA-Z0-9] (gebruik de rechte haakjes, maar geen spatie aan weerszijden!).
6. Voer het volgende in in het “Vervang door” veld: a
7. Klik op “Vervang Alles”
8. Selecteer Alles (Ctrl+A) en Kopieer en Plak in de validator!

De procedure is ongeveer hetzelfde voor Open Office, behalve dan dat Open Office de term ‘Regular Expressions’ gebruikt in plaats van ‘Wildcards’. (Met dank aan Peter Dudley voor dit advies!)

Je kunt hetzelfde effect bereiken door zoek-en-vervang uit te voeren voor iedere letter van het alfabet, letter voor letter. Open het zoek-en-vervang dialoogvenster in je programma en vertel het om iedere ‘b’ te vervangen door een ‘a’, iedere ‘c’ door een ‘a’ enzovoorts, enzovoorts.

We snappen dat mensen kunnen valsspelen en iets kunnen uploaden dat geen roman is en toch winnen. Maar, omdat de enige echte prijs voor het winnen van NaNoWriMo de voldoening is van het bereiken van een geweldige creative doelstelling, maken we ons niet zo druk om mensen die valsspelen. Diegenen die 50.000 woorden uploaden die ze gekopieerd hebben uit Wikipedia.org alleen maar om hun naam in de lijst met winnaars te zien staan zijn toch een beetje zielig en hebben meer hulp nodig dan een te downloaden certificaat kan bieden.

Hoe kan ik mijn NaNoWriMo profiel verwijderen?

Om je profiel te verwijderen dien je in te loggen in je NaNoWriMo account. Ga dan naar de link General Contact form op je Contact pagina en stuur ons een bericht met verzoek om verwijdering van je profiel.

Omdat je aangemeld bent wanneer je dit bericht verstuurt, is je identiteit als de eigenaar van het account vastgesteld, waardoor andere mensen niet ongeoorloofd andermans account kunnen laten verwijderen.

Vanwege de opzet van onze database en forum, kunnen we je profiel direct verwijderen als het volgende van toepassing is:

• Je hebt geen berichten op het forum van de NaNoWriMo website
• Je hebt geen berichten op het forum van de Script Frenzy website

Indien we jouw profiel niet direct kunnen verwijderen, kunnen we je wel helpen door alle email, notificaties en regionale verbintenissen uit te schakelen. Je account wordt dan automatisch verwijderd wanneer NaNoWriMo herstart op 1 Oktober.

Is er een minimum leeftijd om mee te kunnen doen?

Je moet minstens 13 jaar oud zijn om een account bij NaNoWriMo.org te hebben. Alle leeftijden zijn echter welkom om deel te nemen aan National Novel Writing Month, en we moedigen jongere schrijvers aan om in te schrijven op de website van NaNoWriMo’s Jonge Schrijvers Programma. Het is een soortgelijke uitdaging voor deelnemers van 12 jaar en jonger, zowel als voor diegenen die meedoen als onderdeel van een Groep 8

NaNoWriMo Jonge Schrijvers Programma deelnemers mogen hun eigen totale aantal woorden kiezen voor November, en hebben toegang tot geweldige schrijverswerkboeken en leuke schrijfoefeningen voor kinderen. Net als NaNoWriMo is het lidmaatschap in het Jonge Schrijvers Programma gratis.

Moet je betalen om deel te nemen?

Er is niks verplicht, maar we zouden het ontzettend fijn vinden als je iets bijdraagt aan de kosten die we deze maand maken. Hoeveel je doneert is helemaal aan jou.

Wat moet ik doen met mijn cookies?

Sommige problemen met de weergave en het inloggen van de website kunnen verholpen worden door je cookies te verwijderen.

Indien je Internet Explorer in Windows gebruikt, kun je alle cookies verwijderen door “Internet Opties” te selecteren uit het menu “Extra” en vervolgens te klikken op “Verwijder Cookies.”

Als je alleen de cookie van nanowrimo.org wilt verwijderen, zou je deze moeten kunnen vinden in het pad C:\Windows\Cookies of C:\Documenten en instellingen\Gerbruikersnaam\Cookies. Laat een bericht achter in het Tech Help & Site Bug Reports forum als je hulp nodig hebt bij het verwijderen van cookies in een andere browser.

Hoe kan je winnen? Zijn er scheidsrechters? Welke prijzen zijn er te winnen?

Je wint Nanowrimo door 50.000 woorden geschreven hebben voor de klok middernacht slaat op 30 November. Er zijn elk jaar weer veel, heel veel mensen die die eindstreep halen. Prijzen voor de “Beste roman” en “Snelst geschreven roman” bestaan niet. Alle winnaars krijgen wel hun eigen web icoontje en een certificaat.

Wat moet ik met de instellingen van mijn firewall doen?

Sommige persoonlijke firewall producten zijn niet aardig voor de ingebouwde beveiliging aspecten van onze website. De eenvoudigste manier om dit probleem op te lossen is door www.nanowrimo.org toe te voegen aan de lijst betrouwbare of toegestane websites in jouw persoonlijke firewall instellingen.

Als je Norton Internet Security of Norton Personal Firewall gebruikt, volg dan deze instructies on nanowrimo toe te voegen aan de lijst.

1. Open NIS/NPF
2. Klik op “Privacy Control”en dan op de gele “Configure” knop in de rechter sidebar.
3. Klik “Advanced”
4. Klik “Add Site” en voer www.nanowrimo.org in het dialoogvenster.
5. Verwijder de vinkjes en verander de instellingen naar “Permit” in zowel de Global Settings als de User Settings.
6. Klik “OK” en sluit NIS/NPF.

Is het toegelaten om de roman met de hand te schrijven?

Natuurlijk. We kunnen dan niet je totaal aantal woorden verifieren, maar dat is toch maar de krenten in de Nanowrimo pap.

Wat is er gebeurd met de zoekfunctie “Zoek Auteur”?

Wanneer er druk verkeer is op de website, schakelt het NaNo hoofdkantoor de zoekfunctie uit om de site sneller te maken. Wees maar niet bang, je kunt snel weer naar jouw favoriete schrijvers zoeken.

Welke browsers ondersteunen NaNoWriMo? Wat moet ik doen als ik een fout ontdek in mijn browser?

Er zijn gewoonweg veel te veel verschillende browsers om ze allemaal te testen en om iedere browserfunctie te kunnen ondersteunen.We kiezen welke browsers ondersteund worden volgens een aantal criteria. Allereerst kijken we naar onze eigen gegevens om de meest populaire browsers te ondersteunen. Daarna willen we er zeker van zijn dat we voor ieder systeem een gratis browser ondersteunen.

We testen de website in de volgende browsers:

-Internet Explorer 6 en 7
-Firefox 3 en 2 (Windows en Macintosh)
-Safari 2

We ondersteunen helaas geen andere browsers, maar we denken dat alles best zal werken op het gros van de beschikbare browsers.

Wat als ik eraan begin, maar het niet afmaak? Of de 50.000 woorden bereik terwijl mijn verhaal pas op de helft is?

Wie niet waagt, die niet wint, nietwaar?

En het doel van 50.000 woorden is een drempel, niet een gesloten deur. Het bereiken van de 50.000 en nog niet klaar zijn met het verhaal is goed – het betekent dat je nog iets hebt om naar terug te keren.

Hoe en wanneer krijg ik zo’n glimmende stralenkrans naast mijn naam op het forum?

Na een minimum donatie van $10, krijg je je eigen stralenkrans om anderen jaloers mee te maken op de forums. We proberen deze zo snel mogelijk uit te delen, maar soms duurt het even, dus heb geduld

Wat als ik de kaap van 50.000 woorden bereikt heb maar mijn verhaal nog maar half af is?

De vijftigduizend woorden grens is de eindstreep, maar je hoeft er niet per se je eindstation van te maken. Een stuk verhaal over houden aan het eind van je 50k is juist goed, dan heb je iets om later mee door te gaan.

Hoe ontmoet ik andere Wrimos in mijn omgeving?

De eerste stap naar ontmoetingen met andere Wrimos in jouw omgeving zet je door naar de Regionale Lounge van jouw omgeving te gaan op het NaNoWriMo forum. Om jouw Regionale Lounge te kunnen zien, moet je je eerst verbinden met jouw regio door te klikken op de “My Regions” link in je Author Profile. Kies je regio en klik op “Join.” Vanaf dat moment is de Regionale Lounge zichtbaar onderaan het forum.

Veel regios hebben Municipal Liaisons – vrijwillige kopstukken die schrijf-evenementen organiseren bij jou in de buurt. Kijk regelmatig in jouw Regionale Lounge naar de kalender. Je kunt ook een notitie plaatsen in deze lounge om andere mensen uit te nodigen om bij je te komen zitten wanneer je toevallig zit te schrijven in een cafe!

Hoe spreek je NaNoWriMo uit?

NAH-no-RAI-Mo

Ik heb het heel druk in November. Mag ik in oktober beginnen en eerder stoppen?

Nee. Eén van de beste dingen aan NaNoWriMo is de manier waarop het gezwoeg van het creëren zich door de hele gemeenschap van medestanders verspreid. Gedeelde smart is halve smart, daarom moeten alle deelnemers naar dezelfde deadline toewerken.

Is er een minimumleeftijd om mee te mogen doen?

Nee, alle leeftijden zijn welkom. In 2005 zijn we zelfs NaNoWriMo’s Young Writers Program (het Jonge Schrijvers Programma) gestart voor auteurs in de dop tot 12 jaar. Zelfs hele basisschoolklassen kunnen hier aan meedoen.

Kan ik één woord 50.000 keer opschrijven?

Nee. Dus... Nee.

Kan ik meedoen als ik niet uit Amerika kom? Zijn niet-Engelse romans okay?

Zeker weten! We zijn er trots op om een internationaal evenement te zijn, en beschouwen het “Nationale” in de naam niet als refererend aan de Verenigde Staten. Dit is een evenement voor alle naties. We zouden de naam kunnen veranderen naar “International Novel Writing Month”, maar InNoWriMo bekt lang niet zo lekker.

Je kunt romans schrijven in welke taal je maar wilt. Onze validator kan helaas niet omgaan met niet-Latijnse lettertypen, dus zijn er mogelijk problemen met het officieel winnaar worden. Maar, dit is slechts het kersje op de NaNoWriMo taart, en we moedigen je aan om te schrijven in een taal die jij prettig vindt.

Kan ik mijn roman door elkaar husselen voordat ik hem naar jullie onbetrouwbare woord-tellende dwazen verstuur?

Als je Microsoft Word gebruikt, is het eenvoudig om je roman door elkaar te husselen voordat je hem upload, zonder dat je aantal woorden in gevaar wordt gebracht.

1. Open het bestand en maak een nieuwe kopie van je roman met “Opslaan Als...”
2. Open het Zoek en Vervang dialoogvenster (Aanpassen -> Vervang).
3. Klik op “Meer” om het venster uit te breiden.
4. Vink “Gebruik Wildcards” aan.
5. Voer het volgende in in het “Vindt Wat” veld: [a-zA-Z0-9] (gebruik de rechte haakjes, maar geen spatie aan weerszijden!).
6. Voer het volgende in in het “Vervang door” veld: a
7. Klik op “Vervang Alles”
8. Selecteer Alles (Ctrl+A) en Kopieer en Plak in de validator!

De procedure is ongeveer hetzelfde voor Open Office, behalve dan dat Open Office de term ‘Regular Expressions’ gebruikt in plaats van ‘Wildcards’. (Met dank aan Peter Dudley voor dit advies!)

Je kunt hetzelfde effect bereiken door zoek-en-vervang uit te voeren voor iedere letter van het alfabet, letter voor letter. Open het zoek-en-vervang dialoogvenster in je programma en vertel het om iedere ‘b’ te vervangen door een ‘a’, iedere ‘c’ door een ‘a’ enzovoorts, enzovoorts.

Kan ik schrijven en aantallen updaten na verificatie van mijn roman?

Natuurlijk. Verificatie stelt alleen maar vast dat je de grens van 50.000 woorden hebt bereikt. Je kunt je aantal woorden blijven updaten tot één seconde voor middernacht lokale tijd op 30 November.

Mag iedereen aan NaNoWriMo meedoen?

Nee. Mensen die hun teksten (en zichzelf) veel te serieus nemen, moeten hier niet aan meedoen. Voor de rest is iedereen van harte welkom.

Mag ik dan ook geen grote lijnen of aantekeningen hebben uitgewerkt?

Uitgewerkte lijnen, wendingen en aantekeningen worden juist aangemoedigd. Hiermee mag je al maanden eerder beginnen als je dat wil. Eerder geschreven proza of tekst (her)gebruiken staat echter gelijk aan de virtuele doodstraf.

Mag ik in een vreemde taal schrijven?

Tuurlijk! Verhalen in vreemde talen kunnen net zo geweldig zijn.

Mag ik voor NaNoWriMo ook een filmscript of theaterstuk schrijven?

Scripts kunnen heel mooi zijn, maar vallen buiten het idee van NaNoWriMo. Daarom hebben we een script-in-één-maand uitdaging gelanceerd, genaamd Script Frenzy. Wil je samen met ons een script of stuk schrijven? We doen het iedere april!

Minucipal Liaisoning klinkt erg cool. Kan ik een ML worden voor mijn omgeving?

Wie weet! Sommige gebieden hebben al super-efficiënte, monsterlijk aanmoedigende MLs die de laatste drie of vier NaNoWriMos hun vrolijke zweepkunsten hebben getraind tot op Olympisch niveau. Andere gebieden hebben nog geen ML, en kunnen dus wel iemand gebruiken die een beetje handig is in organiseren. Om de regios te bekijken die al wel een ML hebben ga je naar ML Contact Form, waar deze gebieden te zien zijn in het drop down menu. Als jouw gebied nog onontgonnen is, vul dan het Prospective ML Questionnaire in, en verstuur het.

Moet ik mijn roman op 1 November vanuit het niets beginnen? Mag ik een globale opzet gebruiken?

Ja.

Dit klinkt als een stomme, willekeurige regel, dat weten we. Maar als je een half-af manuscript meeneemt naar NaNoWriMo heb je gegarandeerd een miserabele maand. Je geeft te veel om de personages en het verhaal om te schrijven op de opgewekte, alles-is-mogelijk manier die NaNoWriMo zo’n creatieve rush geeft. Geef jezelf een schone lei kado, en je zult kunnen putten uit neiwue werelden der verbeelding en intuitie die onbereikbaar zijn wanneer je werkt in een bestaand manuscript.

Uitlijningen en plot notities worden zeker aangemoedigd en kunnen maanden voor het werkelijke evenement gemaakt worden. Eerder geschreven proza wordt echter bestraft met de dood.

Oh. Ik sprak het uit als NAH-no-RIE-Mo.

Dat is ook goed.

Ontmoeten deelnemers elkaar?

Dit jaar zullen deelnemers van over de hele wereld samenkomen om koffie te drinken, plots te stelen en deel te nemen aan die ene uiterst therapeutisch manier van zeuren die enkel amateur-romanschrijvers kennen. Op dit moment houden de meeste steden en universiteitsstadjes in het Engelstalige deel van de wereld zich al bezig met NaNoWriMo, en ook Europa, Azië en Afrika volgen. Er is dus een goede kans dat er een feestje of NaNo write-in in jouw buurt is! Bekijk de Regional Lounge voor jouw regio in de Forums en kijk wat er in jouw stad te doen is.

Waarom hebben sommige forums een klein zonnetje als icoon? Wat betekent All-Ages?

Alle forums worden gemodereerd om er voor te zorgen dat iedereen een veilige omgeving heeft, zonder pesterijen, mishandeling, spam en andere hatelijke dingen (waar je mee instemde in de Terms & Conditions). Speciale forums werden gevlagd voor verdere moderatie, zodat ze geschikt zijn voor mensen van alle leeftijden, dus obsceen taalgebruik en seksuele inhoud zijn hier ten strengste verboden. Deze forums zijn niet enkel voor minderjarigen, maar een inclusieve plek voor iedereen, dus wees er van bewust dat alle posts die zulke dingen bevatten aangepast of verwijderd zullen worden, of verplaatst naar een beter geschikte plek op de site. Alle regionale forums (het forum voor je stad, dorp of regio) zijn All Ages. De algemene forums die All Ages gevlagd werden zijn:

Waarom zou ik nu 50.000 woorden rotzooi schrijven? Waarom zou ik niet later een echt boek schrijven als ik meer tijd heb?

Hier zijn drie redenen voor.

1) Als je het nu niet doet, doe je het waarschijnlijk nooit meer. Een roman schrijven is meestal een “op een dag” gebeuren. Als in “Op een dag zou ik best een roman willen schrijven.” De naakte waarheid: 99% van ons, als we op onszelf terug moeten vallen, zullen nooit tijd vrijmaken om eem roman te schrijven. Het staat zo ver van ons normale leven af dat het voortdurend naar de onderkant van onze to-do lijstjes afzakt. De structuur van NaNoWriMo dwingt je om al je zelf-vernietigende zorgen weg te stoppen en te STARTEN. Wanneer je de eerste vijf hoofdstukken achter de rug hebt, komt de rest vanzelf. Of met moeite. Maar het komt. En je zult vrienden hebben die je helpen om vol te houden tot de 50.000.

2) Laag inzetten is de beste manier om tot een succes te komen. Bij instap-niveau romanschrijven is het inzetten op een meesterwerk de beste manier om niet vooruit te komen. Met hoge verwachtingen zal alles wat je schrijft rottig en onhandig lijken. Wanneer je je werk bekijkt met het oog op aantal, haal je heel wat druk bij jezelf weg. En je zult jezelf verbazen met een geweldige dialoog hier en een ingenieuze plotdraai daar. Personages zullen dingen doen die je nooit had verwacht waardoor je verhaal naar plaatsen zal gaan die je niet had kunnen voorstellen. Er zal een heleboel onverteerbaar proza zijn, ja. Maar tussen de pulp zal er schoonheid zijn. Een heleboel.

3) Kunst om de kunst doet geweldige dingen met je. Het maakt je aan het lachen. Het maakt je aan het huilen. Het maakt je slaperig en laat je naar buiten gaan in rare broeken. Iets doen, gewoon om het te doen is een geweldig medicijn tegen alle taken en “moeten-doens” van het dagelijks leven. Het schrijven van een roman in een maand is tegelijkertijd enerverend en stom, en we zouden ons allemaal beter voelen als we eens wat vaker spontane stommigheden toelieten in ons leven.

Wat als er een verschil is tussen mijn eigen getelde aantal woorden en die van jullie?

Alle woordentellers zijn het over het algemeen niet met elkaar eens, en er is een goede kans dat er een verschill is tussen onze teller en die van jou. Somige mensen krijgen meer woorden, anderen juist minder. De officiele woordenteller is beschikbaar voor het einde van het evenement waar je je huidige document kunt kopieren en plakken om te tellen.

Wisten jullie dat er een groep is in Vancouver die romans in een weekend schrijft?

Ja, en dat zijn dwazen. Iedereen weet dat het een hele maand kost om een goed en duurzaam kunstwerk te maken.

There's no sign-up fee for National Novel Writing Month, but we do ask ably-financed participants to contribute something towards hosting and administrative costs. Because we're a nonprofit, the donation is tax-deductible! The amount you contribute is up to you.

How do I update my word count?

You can update your word count by entering your total cumulative word count in the field on the top of your screen and hitting "update". You can also use the novel info module to update your word count.

The word count module (and other novel info like title, genre, synopsis, and cover art) is in your profile page.

To find it, go to My NaNoWriMo in the main menu, then click "Edit Novel Info".

You have two options here:

1. Word Count: Simply enter your total cumulative word count (no punctuation please, just numbers) in this box, scroll down to the bottom of the page, and click submit.
2. Word Count Validator: Copy the entire contents of your novel, and paste it into this box.

   Scroll to the bottom of the page, and click submit. Our word count robots will count your words, then delete the file unseen by human eyes. We don't keep a copy of your novel anywhere on our site.

   This option may be greyed out during times of high traffic. During those times, just update your count manually. After November 25th, the word count validator can be used to validate your novel and claim winner status.

All methods of updating your word count will overwrite the previous entry in the database. If you enter the incorrect word count, simply update it again with the correct one.

How do you win NaNoWriMo and what are the prizes?

The way to win NaNoWriMo is by writing 50,000 words by midnight on November 30. Every year, there are many, many winners. There are no "Best Novel" or "Quickest-Written Novel" awards given out. All winners will get an official "Winner" web badge and a PDF Winner's Certificate.

The real prize in NaNoWriMo is the manuscript itself, and the exhilarating feeling of setting an ambitious creative goal and nailing it. And the $1,000,000.

Just kidding about the $1,000,000!

The actual winning process works like this: From 12:00:01 AM, local time, November 25 until 11:59:59 PM, local time, on November 30, all participants who have written more than 50,000 words can have their winning word counts verified by our site. Uploading your novel to the Word Count Validator makes your NaNoWriMo victory official, gets you listed on our Winners Page, and routes you to the secret spot where you can collect this year's winner's certificate. It will also turn your word count bar purple.

To become a winner, first make sure that you have written a manuscript that is 50,000 words or longer. Then sign in to the site, click on Edit Profile, then scroll down to the area labeled Word Count Validator. Copy and paste your entire novel into this box. Then hit the "Submit" button, and prepare for your accolades.

We understand that you may be reluctant to upload your novel to a random website, even to one as winsome as ours. If you are using Microsoft Word it is very easy to completely scramble your novel before uploading it in a way that will not affect its word count.

1. Open the file and make a new copy of your novel using 'Save As...'
2. Open the Find and Replace dialog box (Edit -> Replace).
3. Click the "More" button to expand the box.
4. Check the "Use Wildcards" checkbox.
5. In the "Find What" field, put this: [a-zA-Z0-9] (include the square brackets, no spaces before or after)
6. In the "Replace With" field, put this: a
7. Click "Replace All"
8. Select All (Ctrl+A) and Copy & Paste into the validator!

The procedure for Open Office is essentially the same, except that Open Office refers to 'Regular Expressions' instead of 'Wildcards'. (Thanks to Peter Dudley for this advice!)

You can get the same effect in a more cumbersome way by just doing a find-and-replace on every letter in the alphabet, one letter at a time. Open the find-and-replace interface on your word processing program and tell it to replace every "b" in your story with an "a," and every "c" with an "a," then every "d" with an "a." And so on.

We realize that people can cheat and upload something that's not a novel and still "win." But since the only real prize of NaNoWriMo is the self-satisfaction that comes with pulling off such a great, creative feat, we don't really worry too much about people cheating. Those who upload 50,000 words they copied from Wikipedia.org just to see their name on the Winner's page are pitiful indeed, and likely need more help than a downloadable winner's certificate can provide them.

Is there a minimum age to participate?

You must be 13 or older to have an account on NaNoWriMo.org. But all ages are very welcome to take part in National Novel Writing Month, and we encourage younger writers to sign up over at NaNoWriMo's Young Writers Program website. It's a similar challenge for participants 12 and under, as well as those participating as part of a K-12 classroom group.

NaNoWriMo Young Writers Program participants get to choose their own word-count goal for November, and also have access to great noveling workbooks and fun, kid-oriented writing activities. Like NaNoWriMo, membership in the Young Writers Program is free.

When and how do I start writing? Do I have to write my novel on your site?

You begin writing at 12:00:01 AM local time on November 1. You write your novel off-line, on whatever word processor you like. If you write 50,000 words or more, you upload the manuscript to our site between November 25 and November 30 for word-count verification to win.

Can I participate if I'm not American? Are non-English novels okay?

You bet! We are very proud to be an international event, and don't consider the "National" in the title to refer to the United States. This is an event for all nations. We'd change the name to "International Novel Writing Month," but InNoWriMo doesn't roll off the tongue in quite the same way.

You can write novels in any language you like. Our validator doesn't handle non-Latin characters sets, sadly, so there may be an issue with becoming an official winner. But this is just icing on the NaNoWriMo cake, and we encourage you to write in whatever language is most comfortable for you.

What happens to all the novels written for NaNoWriMo? Has anyone been published?

Novels that are uploaded to us for verification and victory between November 25 and November 30 are counted by a computer script, and then automatically deleted. We do not read or keep any novels sent in, and NaNoWriMo authors retain all rights to everything they write during the event.

Many, many winning novels have been written through NaNoWriMo. Our stats:

1999: 21 participants and six winners
2000: 140 participants and 29 winners
2001: 5,000 participants and more than 700 winners
2002: 13,500 participants and around 2,100 winners
2003: 25,500 participants and about 3,500 winners
2004: 42,000 participants and just shy of 6,000 winners
2005: 59,000 participants and 9,769 winners
2006: 79,000 participants and 13,000 winners
2007: 101,510 participants and 15,333 winners

And a growing number of these novels have found publishers, including one New York Times #1 Bestseller!

Why are you doing this? What do you get out of it?

NaNoWriMo is all about the magical power of deadlines. Give someone a goal and a goal-minded community and miracles are bound to happen. Pies will be eaten at amazing rates. Alfalfa will be harvested like never before. And novels will be written in a month.

Part of the reason we organize NaNoWriMo is just to get a book written. We love the fringe benefits accrued to novelists. For one month out of the year, we can stew and storm, and make a huge mess of our apartments and drink lots of coffee at odd hours. And we can do all of these things loudly, in front of people. As satisfying as it is to reach deep within yourself and pull out an unexpectedly passable work of art, it is equally (if not more) satisfying to be able to dramatize the process at social gatherings.

But that artsy drama window is woefully short. The other reason we do NaNoWriMo is because the glow from making big, messy art, and watching others make big, messy art, lasts for a long, long time. The act of sustained creation does bizarre, wonderful things to you. It changes the way you read. And changes, a little bit, your sense of self. We like that.

Can I share writing duties with a partner?

No. But we would like to take this opportunity to plug our Script Frenzy event. Script Frenzy participants write a 100-page stage play or screenplay in April, and for Script Frenzy you are welcome to work with a partner.

Can I write one word 50,000 times?

No. Well... No.

Why 50,000 words? And how do you define "novel"?

Our experiences over the past nine years show that 50,000 is a difficult but doable goal, even for people with full-time jobs and children. The length makes it a short novel. We don't use the word "novella" because it doesn't seem to impress people the way "novel" does.

We define a novel as "a lengthy work of fiction." Beyond that, we let you decide whether what you're writing falls under the heading of "novel." In short: If you believe you're writing a novel, we believe you're writing a novel too.

Do I have to start my novel from scratch on November 1? Can I use an outline?

Yes.

This sounds like a dumb, arbitrary rule, we know. But bringing a half-finished manuscript into NaNoWriMo all but guarantees a miserable month. You'll care about the characters and story too much to write with the gleeful, anything-goes approach that makes NaNoWriMo such a creative rush. Give yourself the gift of a clean slate, and you'll tap into realms of imagination and intuition that are out-of-reach when working on pre-existing manuscripts.

Outlines and plot notes are very much encouraged, and can be started months ahead of the actual novel-writing adventure. Previously written prose, though, is punishable by death.

If I'm just writing 50,000 words of crap, why bother? Why not just write a real novel later, when I have more time?

There are three reasons.

1) If you don't do it now, you probably never will. Novel writing is mostly a "one day" event. As in "One day, I'd like to write a novel." Here's the truth: 99% of us, if left to our own devices, would never make the time to write a novel. It's just so far outside our normal lives that it constantly slips down to the bottom of our to-do lists. The structure of NaNoWriMo forces you to put away all those self-defeating worries and START. Once you have the first five chapters under your belt, the rest will come easily. Or painfully. But it will come. And you'll have friends to help you see it through to 50k.

2) Aiming low is the best way to succeed. With entry-level novel writing, shooting for the moon is the surest way to get nowhere. With high expectations, everything you write will sound cheesy and awkward. Once you start evaluating your story in terms of word count, you take that pressure off yourself. And you'll start surprising yourself with a great bit of dialogue here and a ingenious plot twist there. Characters will start doing things you never expected, taking the story places you'd never imagined. There will be much execrable prose, yes. But amidst the crap, there will be beauty. A lot of it.

3) Art for art's sake does wonderful things to you. It makes you laugh. It makes you cry. It makes you want to take naps and go places wearing funny pants. Doing something just for the hell of it is a wonderful antidote to all the chores and "must-dos" of daily life. Writing a novel in a month is both exhilarating and stupid, and we would all do well to invite a little more spontaneous stupidity into our lives.

What is NaNoMail?

Everyone participating in NaNoWriMo gets a little mini-email program built into their user account. It's called "NaNoMail," and it allows you to send private messages to other participants without having to know their actual email address. You'll see a "Check and Send NaNoMail" link on your Author Profile page.

NaNoMail is turned on by default. To make it so participants can't send you NaNoMail, just sign in, then head to My NaNoWriMo-->Edit User Settings and uncheck the box marked "Allow Private Messages."

What if I start and don't finish? Or hit 50,000 words but I'm only halfway through my novel?

Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?

And the 50,000-word goal is a threshold, not necessarily a stopping place. Reaching 50k and realizing you still have a lot of wrapping up to do is a good thing---it gives you something to come back and work on later.

Can I keep writing and adding to my word count even after I've had the novel validated and collected my winner goodies?

Absolutely. Validation simply confirms that you have crossed the 50,000-word mark. You can continue to add to your word count in the usual fashion until 11:59:59 PM, local time, on November 30th.

What if there's a discrepancy between what my word count said and what yours comes up with?

Word counters rarely agree with each other, and there is a good chance there will be a discrepancy between our counter and the one on your word processor. Some people gain words and others lose them. We'll have the official word counter available before the end of the challenge (in My NaNoWriMo- > Novel Info) where you can copy & paste your current draft for our count.

Can I use my account on the main site on the Young Writers Program site?

Unfortunately, the two sites are not connected at this time, so you'll need to register separate accounts for each. Hopefully next year you will only need to register one account for both sites.

If I have signed up already on the main site, do I automatically have an account on the YWP site or vice versa?

No, unfortunately you will need to sign up separately on both sites. Feel free to use the same username and password on both, though.

I have an account from last year. Do I need to re-register?

Nope! Just click "User Login" and enter your existing user name and password. That’s it!
If you try to create a new account and you get a message that says “Address and/or user name have already been taken,” it’s because you are already registered.

Returning participants should not click on the "Sign Up Now" option, as you will create a new account and that's not what you want to do!

Can I change my username?

No, unfortunately you cannot change your username.

Can I delete my old username/account?

No, however we periodically clean up the user list by removing accounts that haven't logged in for more than a year. So eventually your old account will be purged.

I lost my password and/or username.

No problem! All you need to proceed is the email address that you signed up with. Go to the login page and enter your email address in the lost password form. The following will happen:

1. A "New Password Request" email will automatically be sent to you within minutes.
2. Open the email and click on the link.
3. Another "New Password" email will be sent to you that contains both your username and your *new* password. Once you log back in with the new password, you can change your password again to whatever floats your boat.

If you are not receiving confirmation emails from our system, please check your spam folder. If you have a white-list or another way of telling your email system which addresses are not spammers, please add "noreply@nanowrimo.org" to the list.

I lost my username and/or password and I no longer have access to the email address that I signed up with.

You will need to start over with a new account.

Can I change the email address associated with my account once I am logged in?

Yes, you can change your email address on the Edit Profile page.

How do I verify if I'm writing by hand?

Invoke the Luddite Clause!

What you do is write your 50,000 words, then have someone you trust verify that it is, indeed, 50,000 words. Then using something like the Lorem Ipsum generator, submit a file of the exact number of words of your handwritten manuscript to our word count validator.

How long can my profile items be? My town name is long and I have a lot to list in my biography.

Locations can be 64 characters or less.

Signature banners must be no more than 500 pixels wide by 100 pixels high.

Where is the post I made in the forums?

One of several things might be at work here.

1) Your post is there, but has not refreshed yet. We have a 15 minute site cache to reduce server strain, so wait a while and see if it comes up.

2) Your post was moved. We frequently move threads to more appropriate forums (for example a question about character motivations would be more appropriate in Plot Doctoring than Character and Plot Realism. Some threads may violate our guidelines, or may have comments that violate our guidelines, and we may move it to an administrative forum for review.

You may contact the forums moderator if you have looked in your subscriptions, the forums, or other forums it might be, and can't find it.

Why are topics with more than 500 posts locked?

The way our content management system works, the more comments a thread has, the more likely they are to bog the site down.

Thanks to some instability at the end of the 2007 season, some very large threads caused system failure, so we are now limiting topics to a maximum of 500 comments. You are welcome to start new threads on the same topic, but to keep this site up and running, we'll have to close the old ones.

How do I post, edit, or delete a novel excerpt, synopsis, or book cover?

Participants can post a novel excerpt, synopsis, and book cover of their NaNoWriMo novels by signing in and heading to the My NaNoWriMo page. On the left-hand menu, you'll see an "Edit Novel Info" link.

Novel excerpts are locked October 1-November 1.

How do I upload a picture?

Once you're logged in, click "Edit Profile" there at the very top of the the site. There's an option there under "Account Settings" called "Upload Photo."

Click on this link and use the form on the next page to upload your photo.

Photos must by 100x100 pixels or smaller at 72dpi, and must be under 50kb.

You can use any photo editing program (even the Paint program built into Windows) to resize your image.

How do I delete my NaNoWriMo profile?

To have your profile deleted, please sign into your NaNoWriMo account, and then click on the General Contact form link on our Contact page and send us a message requesting profile deletion.

Being signed in when you send this message confirms your identity as the account-holder with our robots, and prevents people from maliciously requesting the deletion of other participants' accounts.

Because of the way our database and forums are set up, we can delete your profile immediately if all of the following are true:

• You have no posts in the forums of the NaNoWriMo site
• You have no posts in the forums of the Script Frenzy site

If we cannot delete your profile immediately, we can still help by disabling all mail, notifications, and regional affiliations. Your account will then automatically be cleared out when NaNoWriMo relaunches on October 1.

How can I meet and write with Wrimos in my area?

Dropping by the Regional Lounge for your area in the NaNoWriMo forums is a great first step towards meeting up with Wrimos in your area. To see your Regional Lounge, you have to first affiliate with your region by clicking the "My Regions" link from your Author Profile, choosing your region, and clicking the "Join" link. From then on, your Regional Lounge will be visible at the bottom of the Forums.

Many regions have Municipal Liaisons---volunteer chapterheads who organize local writing events. Check your Regional Lounge to see the calendar of events for your area. You can also just post a note in your Regional Lounge inviting fellow participants to join you at a cafe for an impromptu writing session!

What do I do if I see something bad in the forums?

If you see something in any forum that you think violates the Terms & Conditions of the site in any way, please flag that post using the "Report" button and a moderator will look into it.

What should I do with my cookies?

Some display problems and log in issues can be solved by clearing your cookies.

If you are using Internet Explorer on Windows, you can delete all your cookies by selecting 'Internet Options' from the 'Tools' menu, and then clicking the 'Delete Cookies' button.

If you just want to delete the nanowrimo.org cookie, you should be able to find it in the C:\Windows\Cookies or C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Cookies directory.
Please post in the Tech Help & Site Bug Reports Forum if you need cookie removal instructions for another browser.

What should I do with my firewall settings?

Some personal firewall products don't play nicely with the built in security features of our site. The easiest way to resolve this problem is to add www.nanowrimo.org to the list of trusted or permitted sites in your personal firewall settings.

If you are using Norton Internet Security, or Norton Personal Firewall, please follow these instructions to add nanowrimo to the permitted list:

1. Open NIS/NPF
2. Click on "Privacy Control", then click the yellow "Configure" button in the right-hand sidebar.
3. Click "Advanced"
4. Click "Add Site" and type "www.nanowrimo.org" in the dialog box that appears
5. In both the Global Settings and User Settings boxes, uncheck the boxes, and change the settings to "Permit"
6. Click "OK" and close NIS/NPF

What happened to the "Authors Search" function?

During times of high site traffic, NaNo HQ will disable the "Authors Search" in order to speed up the site. Have no fear, you will be able to search for your favorite Wrimo authors shortly.

Which browsers does NaNoWriMo support? What should I do if I notice a browser bug?

Broswers are too different and too numerous for us to test and support every possible browser option. We decide which browsers to support based on a couple of criteria. First, we check our site logs and make sure that we support the most popular browsers. Next, we want to make sure that we support at least one free browser on each Operating System.

We test the site on the following browsers:
-Internet Explorer 6 and 7
-Firefox 3 and 2 (Windows and Macintosh)
-Safari 2

We do not support other browsers, although things will probably work just fine on most of them.

Municipal Liaisoning sounds pretty cool. Can I be the ML for my area?

Maybe! Some areas already have high-functioning, monstrously encouraging MLs who have spent the last three or four NaNoWriMos honing their cheerful whip-cracking skills to an Olympic level. Other areas are ML-less, and could really use someone with a little organizational moxie. To check out the regions that have MLs, visit the ML Contact Form; the regions that are already covered are listed in the drop down menu. If your region is not covered, fill out the Prospective ML Questionnaire and send it in.

Can I scramble my novel before submitting it to your untrustworthy word-counting goons?

If you are using Microsoft Word it is very easy to scramble your novel in a way that will not affect its word count.

1. Open the file and make a new copy of your novel using 'Save As...'
2. Open the Find and Replace dialog box (Edit -> Replace).
3. Click the "More" button to expand the box.
4. Check the "Use Wildcards" checkbox.
5. In the "Find What" field, put this: [a-zA-Z0-9] (include the square brackets, no spaces before or after)
6. In the "Replace With" field, put this: a
7. Click "Replace All"
8. Save the scrambled file as a text file, and upload away!

The procedure for Open Office is essentially the same, except that Open Office refers to 'Regular Expressions' instead of 'Wildcards'. (Thanks to Peter Dudley for this advice!)

You can get the same effect in a more cumbersome way by just doing a find-and-replace on every letter in the alphabet, one letter at a time. Open the find-and-replace interface on your word processing program and tell it to replace every "b" in your story with an "a," and every "c" with an "a," then every "d" with an "a." And so on.
