[[STICKY]] Unofficial Write-Outs and Coffee Klatsches

Hello everyone!

Every year we, as the MLs, end up in a quandry. In order to plan for the month of November, and to book space with facilities like the Winnipeg Public Library, we have to set dates for pretty much everything that happens at least six months in advance.

Then reality hits in November and we suddenly find that, collectively, we want to go write at other times in a social setting that are not actually official write-ins. Sitting down in a public place with a notebook and a cup of beverage (black tams and wool pea-coats are optional, as are half-moon glasses perched on your nose) somehow gets us into that 'writer' frame of mind much better than three kids, a dog, and two ringing phones while your husband yells at the Sunday Night Football game. *grin*

This thread is the place for us to post all those 'hey, I'm gonna be at Franks Coffee House and want people to come and write with me' invitations. Feel free to put up a little card on your table, or wear your Nano shirt, or what have you, so people can find you.

We have only two rules:

One: Do NOT, unless you happen to be out of Winnipeg have a write-out on a night that an official event happens. Please and thank you; people should not have to choose whose event to attend. Event dates are on the front of your Hipster PDA or located in the date thread, here:
http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/3001334

Two: Under no circumstances should anyone be meeting anyone in anyone's home. I know we're all very nice people, and it's a matter of safety for everyone involved. Most coffee places, restaraunts, college and university lounges, libraries etc. are adequate to the purpose and apporpriate for meeting strangers. Make sure you know your route (if on the bus), that someone knows where you are if you're out late at night, and buddy-walk people to their cars if needed.

We may sound paranoid, but we care about you, and to steal a phrase, "it's for your own good".

Now that we're done scaring the pants off you (please, put your pants back on...), this is really all in good fun. Some of the best writing times we've had in the past have been impromptu gatherings at the Park Theatre or the Library on a Sunday afternoon.

See below for random acts of creative mayhem!

[[STICKY]] Self-Introduction Thread of Randomness...

Why?

Because we've got to get back into the habit of 'filler' somehow... ;)

Copy and paste (or quote) the questions into a reply and go...

=====================
Name/Handle:

Worst Nano Moment:

Funniest Nano Moment (if not above):

Hobbies / Volunteering Outside Nano:

Script Frenzy Veteran: Y/N

Suggestion for the Co-MLs (Municipal Liaisons / Real time event hosts / Cheerleaders):

ADD A QUESTION:

A) Have you ever had a character just stop/die/sleep/leave or otherwise completely kill off your story?

B) Flashbacks: are they fun times, are they useful when employed well, are they generally annoying, or should they all burn with much fire?

C) Are you going to start writing at midnight on Hallowe'en and pull an all-nighter (since Oct 31st is a Friday)?

D) What kind of characters do you like to write?

E) Why Nano?

F) How do get your friends/family/co-workers to give you your NaNo time?

G) Have you ever had a dream about NaNo?

H) Is there any single author you would like to emulate?

I) How many years have you started plot / storyless and just hoped for the best?

J) How do you avoid bogging yourself down retooling and "fixing" as a procrastination device?

K) What do all of you fine Nanotobans do for a living?

L) Have you ever gotten published and if not do you plan to someday?

M) In 25 words or less, please explain the fascination with vampires.

N) If you were a kind of book, what would you be and why?

O) What do you do to keep fit and (relatively) sane during November?

P) What other creative outlets do you have besides Nano (music, painting etc.)

Q) When November ends and all is done, how will you release thirty days of boiling tension?

R) Do you ever have certain characters/places/themes that stick with you, ending up in multiple stories?

S) If your NANO tale could be a religion what would it be? (If you're a Nano virgin, use the last story you wrote)

T) How do you get over writer's block?

U) You are told you can’t die until you read the most boring novel on the planet. While this immortality is great for awhile, eventually you realize its past time to die. Which book would you expect to get you a nice grave?

V) Preferred Beverage Stimulus for the ongoing campaign against word deficit?

W) How long have you been writing?

X) Favorite novel?

Y) What's your favourite horrible thing to have happen to a character?

Z) Ever have a character flat-out refuse to do what you intended them to?

AA) Have you, or would you ever use NaNoWriMo as a method of "trying out" a new style or theme, or otherwise challenge yourself. This can be by your choice of subject matter or genre. Or do you stick to things you know, in the spirit of being able to pump out your 50k words as quickly as possible?

AB) What is the first thing you want to do once NaNo is over?

(Other regional areas, please contact us as soon as possible to get events in your city or town added to this thread.)

=========

Hi! We're Betty and Heather and we're the local in person, live, breathing face of NaNoWriMo in the Winnipeg area. As you can see, we put on a number of different events over the course of November to help you along in reaching prolific nirvana. We're not above bribing you to come out and meet other writers, or actually *gasp* write in public with other people.

The kick-off, mid-month and TGIO are largely 'social' events. This means we get everyone introduced, have folks share stories, maybe play some harmless party games, and generally remember that while writing is a solitary vocation, is doesn't have to be an isolationist one.

Write-ins are just that. Participants come in and set up their method of creativity of choice (laptop, notepad, clay tablets) and write for about an hour in relative silence against a timer. Write-ins are working meetings in a way that social gatherings are not, so we do expect people to come with some sense of focus. There's room for a little bit of socialization after the timer goes off for the night. Peer pressure is a great motivator.

Virtual write-ins are something of a blend between the two. There's brief word wars interspersed with spats of conversation. And don't worry, we'll post instructions to the forums!
See here: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/3104563

The Aftermath

The end is two days behind us now, and we've all had some time to recover and contemplate and draw what conclusions we can from the whole ordeal. Now, I think it's time for us to talk about our feelings. Group hug, everyone. There we go, doesn't that feel better?

So, how do you feel about this past month? About your wordcount, and the work you produced? How's your social life recovering from thirty days of self-imposed hermitage? Anything else you'd like to add?

For my own part, I'm quite pleased with how I managed to pull it together at the end after falling behind by thousands of words no less than three times. On the other hand, I feel like what I wrote is some of my worst work in years. It's amateurish, forced, and riddled with inconsistencies, but hey, that's okay. We all expect that anyway. What matters is the motivation to write, and I think I'm feeling that again.

Fortunately, I didn't have much of a social life to begin with, and I think I might have MORE of a social life now because of NaNo, odd as that is.
Calgary / Manitoba Word War!

Hey everyone... *taps gauntlet lightly in palm*

Calgary's asked us if we think we can write more than they can - anyone game? :)

-Bets-
(For the newer folks:
Intraregional word wars - this one will probably be based on percentages complete or something like that rather than individual counts - are a fun way to encourage a little friendly competition between areas. In the past, we've taken on the Dakotas, and it's turned out to be a great way to foster a sense of communal identity.)

Winnipeg vs. Calgary (Average Per User)

ETA: Realized as I was reading the Calgary Taunt Thread that I forgot to post this to both forums so everyone can share in the throwing of snow-filled gauntlets. Now where would be the fun in missing that? *G*
Thompson Thread

Hey folks!
Got a few hellos on the streets already!
Blenky here, arguing with my cat for space on the desk. I'm a substitute teacher on top of being crazy up here in Thompson and I'm your fearful leader in this insanity!

This is the thread for those of us waaaay up North! Been adjusting my computer for optimal comfort, stocking up on Starbucks cards, trying to get thing together for my third Nano (second as an ML, whoohoo!).

Wonder which days would work best for everyone? I'm thinking Sundays at the Library here in Thompson 3-4 and maybe an evening during the week, like Thursday if anyone was interested...place to be debated on. Any other suggestions? Lemme know!
Talk to you later!
No End in Sight

Just wondering if there's anyone else out there who's suffering under the mighty hand of defeat already. I'm... significantly behind, with no clear path to even 35k, let alone 50.

I need someone to whine with, so... free question going out to all of you who've come to the realization that it's impossible (or at the very least, rather unlikely) you'll be seeing a purple bar this year.

How you feeling? Are you still plugging, or giving up? What kept you from it?

My own answers are: Defeated, rather dissapointed but still resolved. Yes, I'm still going to be working on it, going to see how far I can press myself. Already this year I've doubled my last year's wordcount, I've hit the 50% mark for the first time in my rather poor NaNo history and I've got a .ogm file that holds the longest story I've written to date. I'm going to go as long and as hard as I can, just to see what I can really do.

As for what kept me from it? A myriad of things. Distractions were a big part, work was another, but the thing that kept me from it the most often was the plot itself. It started strong, I had my MC's voice in my head very strongly, but after a while, she got quiet, and the plot stopped moving. Try though I might, I haven't been able to jumpstart it again, and it's killing my wordcount. An unexpected plot event that nevertheless got me to the ends I needed derailed me, as the MC's mindset shifted considerably and recovering is... difficult. It doesn't help that I needed her here in the first place, but the slowdown was kind of unexpected.

So, any thoughts? Laments? Gripes? All-out complaining?
Rainbow Ninja Writers Society

So at the various write ins and write outs over the past month I've heard a number of people comment on the disappointment that they feel at the end of NANOWrimo when it all stops. Afterwards it all goes back to lonely writing alone without the support of your fellow writers. So Tamile and I decided to set up an alternative The Rainbow Ninja Writers Society. Starting in January we will hold a month writing outs (Not over nights lets save those for NANO) and in the mean time we have set an e-mail list which can be found here

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ninjawriters/

This is not something that is meant to replace NANOWrimo in any way, it is just a way to keep writing together and keep the encouragement going for everyone.

Stop by and sign up

Rainbow Ninja Clan of Death - Write Out

I have been forced to write this at the point of little tiny plastic daggers, swords and throwing stars...

After the success of the Halloween Midnight Write Out and the Mid Month Ketch-up Write Out, the Rainbow Ninja Clan of Death has snuck down in to the basement of Pendragon Games and Hobbies and set things up for one last over night writing session. Friday November 28th we will gather together to celebrate our successes and struggle to avoid any failures as we WRITE OR DIE at the hands of the tiny plastic Rainbow Ninja who hid in our NANOWrimo kit bags from the start.

The doors will open at 8 o'clock people are welcome to start writing at any time. There is plenty of electrical power and power bars so that won't be an issue. The night is limited to 25 people for space concerns so please RSVP as early as you can to ensure that you get space. For those of you who haven't come out to one of the over nights yet, We have a great time and get in a ton of writing done. So far at the over nights alone we have written two and a half NANOWrimo novels. Lets keep up the tradition and make it five by the end of november.

This time out there is no need to bring a tin for the bin, just bring what you need to write and make it through the night (WARNING: OTHER WRITERS RECOMMEND AGAINST JACK'S ENERGY PILLS - APPARENTLY THEY TASTE LIKE SOMETHING YOU SHOULD NOT EAT AND KICK LIKE A MULE THE NEXT DAY) If you want to bring something extra to share with all the other writers you are certainly welcome to do so.

We look forward to seeing you on Friday the 28th of november

Randilin and Tamile

P.S. I Have been told by the ninja's that they are trying to arrange a Internet connection so people can upload there NINJA APPROVED Completed work.

P.P.S. The Ninja also say that you should shop at Pendragon for any of your gaming Needs...

Places without Internet....

Okay since last saturdays write in I've been hopelessly word less... Why????

I help administrate a web forum... so I've been procrastinating using every method known to LOTR nerd kind. Including - Spamming, RPing, playing in the server redecorating forums, hound rulers (single forum moderators) to pick a blinking icon already so I can swap out after halloween... Randomly destroying peoples minds as my halloween character and otherwise inciting complete anarchy... (Worst admin ever I know)

So I need a list of places where I can not possibly connect to the internet AT ALL and be allowed to sit for hours and type while spending minumal money on food stuffs. My laptop has wireless so that means starbucks and second cups are out.
Having to bow out... :-(

Hello, all:

Unfortunately, due to poor health and a sudden influx of pages from my editors I'm going to have to call it quits on NaNo this year. I'm extremely fatigued most of the time and it's going to take everything I've got to meet my professional obligations. Turning out 50,000 words, or even 30,000, is out of the question.

I was really looking forward to having a go at it this year since I won last year, and I'm very sad at how things have turned out. So I just wanted to wish the rest of you all the best. You can do it!

:-)

Have fun and take care.

Virtual Write-In Dates and Instructions (Nov. 7 / 21) **UPDATED WITH DIFFERENT APPLET

Since the virtual write-ins were such a success last year, we're going to try them again. The dates and information on how to get into the room are below (I use the Nano IRC server, but not the Java client, it's horribly slow).

Friday November 7th, 7:00 p.m. CST - 10:00 p.m. CST
Friday November 21st, 7:00 p.m. CST - 10:00 p.m. CST

-=-=-
Okay.
I will try to make this as n00b-proof as I can. :)
DON'T log in before 7:00 p.m. CST.

New To IRC Users:

The web-based client I would recommend for new users is called WebIRC. It's a CGI-based client, which won't mean anything to most of you, but it's a lot simpler than the Java interface on the Nanowrimo web site and a LOT faster to load / simpler to use.

** ALL RIGHT... the server I gave people keeps vomiting.
Go here instead:
Mibbit Autologin Applet

There are three boxes to fill in:

Choose a Nickname: Please use your Nanowrimo ID (If it has spaces, use an underscore so it looks_like_this) For example, I will be listed as bpunkert, Heather would be listed as Heartweaver

Choose the Join Chatroom button.

The IRC chat interface has four parts:

    * The main chat window. The big box in the middle is where people's comments will scroll by. If it's going too fast to follow, there's a scroll bar along the right of the big box.
* The text entry field at the bottom. Type something, press enter, and we all see it. Simple enough.
* The top channel list which shows all the channels you're in / people you're talking to. You'll have two boxes - one will say "Status", one will say "#nanotoban". Make sure you're in #nanotoban. (in Mibbit, they're tabs)
* The list of active participants in the channel which appears on the right side.

What to do now that you're here:

    * When you get into the channel, let us know you're there, word count, location, real name if you want, etc.
* When we're actually writing, I'll mute the channel. This means you won't be able to post anything until I unmute it. (Word wars will likely be 15 minutes at a go with a break to discuss in between). I'll change the topic to reflect this.
* If you come in after seven (we'll work in much smaller bursts than I typically do at a write-in), just hang out and write / wait until I unmute the channel and check in then.

To leave the channel and quit IRC for the night, type /quit (include the leading slash).

A very basic introduction to IRC and some basic commands are available here:
http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/irctutorial.html
... but the CGI interface means you really shouldn't need them. Just type what you want to say and press Enter on your keyboard to send it to the channel ...there's a lot more to it, but I'm trying to keep this as simple as I can for those who are absolute rank newbies

=============
Experienced IRC Users:
IRC Client of your choice

    * hostname - irc.goodchatting.com:6667
* channel name - #nanotoban
* username - Nanowrimo User ID

No DCC, no CTCP, no bots. Please refrain from whispering or messaging the other participants unless approached first. This is to reduce the potential for confusion due to multiple windows / conversations from those who have NO experience with IRC.

-------------------

If you noticed the Q&A today, it features some friends of mine from Toronto. A bunch of them got together and wrote nano-related songs and made a compilation CD.

Debs put one of the tracks on her blog:

http://deborahlinden.com/?p=72

Flin Flon thread

Hey all you Flin Flonners! Is anyone else out there doing the Nanowrimo? I've succeeded at the nano 2 years but have only ever seen 1 other person even remotely from the area on this site.

I'm hoping there will be other people to connect with on this forum.
Bewilderment / Glee

Either one, or both, seems to strike a lot of people over the month. Plus I just like to hear how other people are experiencing bamboozlement, or catching their second wind. Blather please! ...if you want.

I'm sort of almost getting both, at the moment. Suddenly things are turning a lot creepier than I had expected, and I find myself wanting to play that up. It's a lot easier to induce torment upon my characters this way, too, so that's a definite bonus! One of my MCs has already undergone a nightmare only to wake up to have a bag put over his head and get dragged off into an interrogation room. I've never really written anything all that creepy before so this is kind of exciting. And weird.
A Very Serious Question Concerning Quotes

Dear Nanitobans,

Please advise:

In my novel I am incorporating real quotes from my many Amy Vanderbilt books of etiquette. Is there such thing as quoting too long of a passage, or is that something I should not be worried about at this point?

Is it considered word count cheating that I'm incorporating quotes? In my creative defense, I'm using them as a way to create an internal dialogue w/ my main character. When she needs a solution to a problem, she looks to her books for an answer. I quote a passage or a line, and then she reacts to it.

Thank you for your attention regarding this matter.

Sincerely,
Kim

p.s. I'm clearly being influenced by my character...:
----------
Nurture your inner compost. One day flowers may grow.

The Mid-Month Ketch-Up Write Out

Tamile and I are pleased to announce the first ever Mid-Month Ketch-Up. After the smashing success of the Midnight Writing Kick Off, we started looking in to the possibility of having another one at mid-month and we got the confirmation this morning that it is a go. For those of you who missed the Midnight Writing Kick Off as a collective we wrote a complete NANO novel between 14 people, consumed a lot of slurpees and a massive amount of chocolate.

This time out we will be following the example of San Francisco’s Night of Reckless Writing and doing some good for the community. No you will not have to bring $200 in donations in order to attend. All you need to do is bring in two none perishable food items for Winnipeg Harvest.

Date: Saturday, November 15th
Time: Doors open at 8pm, and writing official starts at 9pm
Location: Basement of Pendragon Games and Hobbies
1354 Main Street (The corner of Main and Catherdal)

The night will follow the pattern set at the Midnight Writing Kick Off and there will be Hourly Word Wars with prizes. If you do work for/own/know of a company that would be willing to donate a prize or two towards the night please let me know at the RSVP address. Also if there is enough interest we will look at the possibility of a group Pizza order around midnight (Looking at about $5 a person)

Please RSVP to randilin@mts.net as soon as possible as space is limited to the first 25 people.

Post-Halfway Party, Pre-Overnighter

I think after the Half-way Party, Val and I are going to grab a beer and snacks at the Elephant & Castle, which is a short walk from the library. We're not sure if we're celebrating or downing our sorrows, but beer does the trick in either case. I think Karen (who can't make it to the party) is going to join us as well.

You guys are welcome to come out, too :)
Word Count

What is the best way to calculate word count if your writing program doesn't do it for you?

I remember there was a word count site I found last year, but is it really reliable?

Thoughts? :)
Writing tonight (Nov 14th) Starbucks on Graham

Hey nano-ers,

I think I'm going to get out of the house and write tonight at the newish Starbucks on Graham, perhaps from 8:30 until 9:30 or 10:00, if anyone wants to come join me.

If the Starbucks is too crowded, I may relocate to the Second Cup on Graham.

University of Manitoba write-in

Would anyone at the U of M or in the south end be interested in doing a write-in somewhere on the U of M campus sometime next week?

If there's interest I can check around and try to find a place, unless people know of a nice place to take over. The wi-fi room in the University Centre comes to mind, depending on how many people we are, or maybe just a corner of the library.

Not part of the organizational committee, just a person with no transportation to the other write-ins XD;;;;

Santa Claus parade .. on Midmonth :O !

So yeah, while going to grab lunch I noticed on the way back into downtown they have begun setting up signs saying that Main street will be pretty much closed down til 4 just after York. So if anyone is coming in from the south end and driving, I think if you go down Broadway you can turn on the second or third street and find the parkade on the other side of the library, rather than having to go ALL THE WAY AROUND to get on the street that will take you in front of the library entrance parkade.

Man our downtown sucks, lol. Anyways I wasn't sure where to post this, since I'm not sure whether its a faux-paus (sp?) to post in the official thread. And if this is going to help anyone but me XD (Yay St. Vital!).

But hopefully this helps some, whether on your way there or way back.
