I have an idea, but I haven't fleshed it out completely yet. I'm still revising last year's. This year's story is a combination of a romance and a mystery type thing.

Seeing that I had to drop out of last year's bit due to health issues, I am hoping this one will be better for me.

My novel of choice is a Fantasy set in a made up world that meshes many of the anceint cultures of our world together.

Hi, i'm back again...

Didn't finish last year due to personal reasons...but i hope those are a thing of the past for good this time...:)

I'm planning a kind of reality-based fantasy for this year...and i'm hoping that'll make more sense once i get started...:)

Hi!

This year will be my very first NaNoWriMo, so here's hoping I can do it! The life of a high school student is exceptionally busy, so you never know...

I haven't decided exactly what I want to write yet, but I'm feeling inspired by "To Kill A Mockingbird", so maybe something in that vein.

Hello, again. Maybe this year I can finally finish something. That would be nice.

Now if only I could come up with an idea.

Hey, all!

Second year of NaNo, here. Last year, I did a high fantasy story, but lately I've been on a low/urban fantasy kick, so I think I'll try something in that vein. I've got two ideas... now I just have to pick one. ^_^;

Sounds like you have a lot on your plate. Don't despair though. Sometimes when you are so busy, it's actually easier to write for NaNo. Good luck!

Hi Everyone -

This is my first year doing NaNo and I am excited to get started...2 weeks from today!

I'm thinking of a youth/young adult. I'm already working on a mainstream fiction and I would like to start from scratch.

I look forward to kicking the month off with you all!

I dropped out last year around 10,000 words, and that was when I had an easier schedule than the one I've got now. Nevertheless, I'm masochistic/crazy (MasoCrazy (tm)) enough to try it again.

I'm forsaking my beloved category of "Other" (Not indecisive, just pretentious) and going with sci-fi this time.

I see several of The Usual Suspects, and I see some new crewmates aboard the Black Quill! Welcome aboard!

This is year 3 for me. I was "wordplay2005" last year, and the year before...so I thought it was time for a new ID!

2005 went well....2006 went down the well....we'll see what 2007 holds!

I have take the "Other" category as I will be working on memoir/personal essay....it might fall under "spiritual" as it evolves....it might fall under "humor"....but I am working without a muse other than my gut! 30 days, 30 essays, approximately 1700 words each.

HOIST THE COLORS!!!!

At first I thought I wasn't going to attempt NaNo this year, but with my current...er...less than optimal employment situation, I should have more time for writing than I anticipated.

I'll be working on a young adult fantasy novel.

Hmm . . . I 'lost' last year, also strange personal reasons. That semi-novel still has potential, but I obviously can't work on it next month. I have a YA urban fantasy in my head but I'm sort of worried it's a little slight on plot. I hope I can get it to 50K words.

I'm also 'commuting' -- I live in Cleveland but I identify with my Toledo peeps. :)

Anyway, awesome to see so many people back!

Here's the funny thing: I have an ending all planned out, but I'm not quite sure about everything else. And it's general enough that I could squeeze it into most genres without too much trouble, although I think I'm leaning towards contemporary fiction. The next ten days will be spent feverishly working on an outline so that I have a rough idea of where I'll go...but I suspect there will lots of off-the-cuff writing.

My idea in a nutshell: a private investigator (let's call him Tyler) becomes caught up in an FBI case, and works with authorities to track down a secretive underworld kingpin. But there's a secret I don't want revealed until the final chapter: Tyler has been hired by the kingpin to find her daughter's killer, who happens to be Tyler's FBI partner. Under the guise of aiding the FBI, Tyler has been doing his own work for the kingpin. And once he knows who the killer is, Tyler will lead his partner to the kingpin, where she can exact revenge for her daughter's death.

That last part is supposed to be the "shocker" ending, where the reader suddenly finds out that the main protagonist has been dirty all along. And to make it even harder on myself, I want to do this first-person from Tyler's POV. Along the course of the novel, Tyler will get help from a remote accomplice called Martin...but the reader doesn't know that Martin is actually the kingpin, helping the FBI track herself down while giving Tyler enough time to ferret out the killer.

I'm toying with the idea of doing something obnoxiously clever like having the kingpin's name be Mary Tinsman or something (which would give the alias of Mar-tin), but I'm worried it might be a little too transparent.

I hope all of that makes sense. I'm slightly worried that I might be writing myself into a corner already, but if that happens I'll just throw in an alien invasion or something. :)

I'm a newbie to this, but I got fired up at the Northwest Ohio Writers Forum meeting last Saturday and decided to give it a go. My full screen name (which I'm not sure is going to fit) is "NeverGonnaGetThisDoneButImGonnaTry". To those of you scratching your heads, thinking you might know me, I'm Dave D....the creepy stalker guy.

Good luck!

OK, I've changed my screen name because the other one was WAY too long.

Yes, the shorter ID works better....otherwise we were going to have to call you Sparky or something short.

Emperorhand, You have a map, and you have a destination.....that's more than a lot of people can say!

Alien invasions work.....Ninjas dropping out of trees also work....

It's a tough lesson to learn (I'm just starting to get a handle on it myself) but when you start to feel bogged down, that is THE best time to (as they said in Bull Durham) "Don't think, just throw." Or "Don't think, just write"....NaNo is a great chance to tell your internal editor to shut up and just let you write. Worry about quality and having it "make sense" later....worry about editing out the goofy parts later....just write! It'll be a great trip!

*waves*

Hi, newbie here. First year doing NaNo. *gulp*

Um, how much trouble will I be in if I confess that I'm trying to finish something that's half-done? I don't know the community standards on cheating, and I don't know if not starting from scratch counts or not.

I just realized earlier in the fall that if I'm ever going to finish this novel and try to move forward with what I really want to do with my life, I have to make myself do it, and support/discipline are what's lacking. It's too easy to farf around on the Internet or watch tv or read instead of writing something original, even just for a little while a day.

And for my third "oh please don't let them be carrying rotten vegetables" admission, it's a romance novel. It started out life as something else, but it's about a university professor whose long-term boyfriend leaves her without warning. In going out one night for consolation cheesecake, she stumbles across a man bleeding in an alley and gets caught up in the usual web of intrigue and romance while discovering what she really wants out of life.

As long as you only COUNT from the word you start with on Nov 1st, it isn't cheating.

Romance? So? Ain't that what Avengangle writes? We let her in.

The whole point of this is to develop of the habit of writing every single day.

It just dawned on me that uploading 20 or so chapters for a word count would really suck.

Can it even be done?

Or do you write your novel as ONE LOOOOOONG document so you only have to upload something once?

EDIT: Oops, wrong topic. See "Format" and respond there, please.

Hey Gang!

my best to everyone undertaking this remarkable journey through the month of November! This will be a grand time.

As for me, my novel will be once again another visit to the land of the Nephilim.

This year's novel is tentatively entitled, "The Nephilim Chronicles: May the Road Rise". This year's novel takes place in Ireland! It'll be a great deal of fun.

OK, it's 12:17—are we writing yet? ;-)

Hi, this is my first year. I've toyed with the idea of writing a novel, even started a couple, but never fully committed. When I stumbled across this yesterday—seriously!—I said "what they hey" and signed myself up.

The best way to describe my story is to say that it is somewhat autobiographical (write what you know, eh?), except the plot hasn't happened yet. Oh, that makes sense. LOL! Genre? Not sure. Probably chick lit comes closest.

When I say autobiographical, I'm referring to my "former life" as a (female) rock musician. This story may well wind up running parallel to my reality, if all goes well. Some might call it a mid-life crisis. I call it blowing the dust off of a dream and taking a chance at living life on my own terms.

Working title was going to be "Pretty Good For a Girl" until I researched and found out a snowboarder has already written a book with that title. "I'm With the Band" is taken, too. *sigh* Anyway, this is all about the story, right? I'm 700 words into it and raring to go.

Good luck, everyone! May the scribbling begin!

Anyone besides me burning the 3rd shift oil?

At least this gives me something to do when i'm done with the work portion of work. And since i swept and dusted yesterday, all i have to put up with is the occasional crazy caller.

Yay, working on Halloween...and admittedly dawdling...:)

second year nano'er here. last year i hailed out of michigan and wasn't able to finish. this year i'm a toledo transplant and looking forward to reaching 50K with "ease"!

i'm writing in the mystery & suspense genre, which is new for me considering i'm more of a contemporary fiction writer. the story just came to me so i figured i'd roll with it. *shrug* sometimes the art knows best.

good luck to everyone! i look forward to connecting with you all and reading of your triumphant success!

Um, this is so late it's not even funny, but...

First year. I'm not actually sure WHAT genre my story (novel? Novella? Story-like-thing?) falls into, but... meh. In case you were wondering, thus far it's not as hard as I expected, although, since I'm a middle school student, balancing acedemics and writing has been interesting (if I fail my French test tomorrow, I blame this, heh.)

Yeah. That's me.
