My characters have got themselves a lot of gold.

I know they can't just walk up to a bank and say- give me cash for gold. Well, they might, but it would draw a lot of attention.

How can you go about getting rid of a big lump of gold? Melt it into smaller ingots? (how?) Sell it off bit by bit, here and there?

The book I'm reading right now (Tom Holt's Expecting Someone Taller) has the main character wondering about that exact same problem. His best (non-magical) solution was to find an disreputable gold dealer. Higher class jewellers or pawn shops won't touch it because it's probably stolen.

I, personally, think the easiest way would be to make it as legitimate as possible. There aren't any eccentric old relatives of your characters that have recently died and left their clutter-filled house to be sorted through?

If you do decide to break it up, it's probably best to have several different characters in several different places try to sell it, since smaller amounts of gold are less likely to cause alarms than one huge chunk.

Internet? Create a fake e-personality "gramma died n left me all this gold cause she was fraid of banks stealing her money" and then e-bay? Heck you could go into a bank or two with that story.

Not sure how much you have but that might be a way to go for it.

In my city we have gold and silver exchanges. In fact, there is one just a few blocks from my house. You just walk in the door and plunk down your gold or silver. I've traded in silver before and never had the least trouble selling bullion.

Gold coins are even easier to sell, since coin dealers are all over the place. Usually, coins are worth much more than just bullion. If your characters came into a bunch of gold coins and don't wish to attract attention to that fact, they might travel around selling a few coins at each shop.
