I've been having an incredibly hard time finding any information on this. Most of the information I've found comes in the 20th century. But there were underground gambling gangs and many were involved in utlranationalist tactics with the government at the time. But I haven't been able to find much on how they were organized, what their "legal" business activities were and generally what life was like in them.

If anyone has any direction for me whatsoever, I would be very, very grateful! ^_^

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yakuza (I know this one is Wiki, but it might give you a jumping off point to more links)
