I seriously doubt this will be a major plot point in my story, but it's a background color thing I'd like to know more about, since the main setting of the story is a family-owned Italian restaurant in Denver.

My mum grew up in North Denver, where the population was mostly Mexican and Italian, and she's mentioned different times that there actually was a mob presence there at one time. The family name was Smaldone, and while they were quite the local legend (mostly present in the grocery truckers' unions, she thinks), they were small potatoes compared with the larger families in New York, Jersey, and Illinois. Beyond that, she really doesn't know or remember much, but she's said enough to pique my curiosity.

Any further information anyone has, or even just the name of a source I could look up, would be wonderful. Mostly I'm wondering if they're still around or if they've fizzled out over the past forty years.

I doubt I can get anyone to talk to you about the family... I can tell you though, that they are still in the Denver area, but I don't know much more than that... besides the fact that I'll soon be related to them. It's not talked about much to those not born in the family, and even then, it's not openly talked about. Italians are different from what I've come to learn over the last three years. Feel free to pop me a message though, and I'll see if I can help more.
