Now, we all come to a point in the process of writing where we just don't know what to name a character. This comes as a huge problem especially if the as such unnamed character is the MC. So, I thought I might start this little thread in hopes of generating some good ideas for people. Below are a few of my own. They're more fantasy like but still good. Check them out and adopt as you like.

Some interesting, normal names, swiped from my spam folder. (I've named characters from spam before. It's a surprisingly useful resource for randomly-generated names.)

Orville N. Joseph
Dexter Sharp
Dominick Cross
Randolph Piper
Rae C. Darden
Rhonda Shelton
Lovetta Jelinek
Abby Gerome
Elvis Stanley
Kelly Z. Holliday
Ernestine Meuller
Erwin Len

Aaaand that's all I can be bothered for, but I might come back with more later. Woot, a use for spam!

"Dominick Cross" is a great MC name. I love it. I may just use that unless I come up with something better, which is unlikely.

"Ponce Adalbert" is indeed awesome, in a Don Quixote kind of way: "I am Poncé Adalbert, scourge of the west!"

I am so working that into my story somehow.

I deliberated upon Sieglinde Stark and very very briefly on Sieglinde Spitznogle for the name of my main character, but both are pretty ridiculous sounding, so they're up for adoption ;)

Okay, since I took a name (and I might another) here, here's a few I found that I think sound good, but don't have a use for:

Toni Hoyt
Hilary Jefferies
Arlene Merritt
Miranda Gedman

I'm going to be swiping names off this list of star names~

http://www.naic.edu/~gibson/starnames/

They're awesome if you're writing something with a fantastical bent to it, but don't want to resort to the bang-the-keyboard method of generating names.

----------

I'm tired of calling stories "the story I'm writing now" or "the story with XXX in it" or "the story about XXX event". Come what may, this next NaNovel is going to have a working title...and that title shall be Baseball Until Further Notice.

If anyone is interested, I have an enormous Notepad file of potential villain/fantasy names. They're not labeled male/female, but include meanings. PM me and I'll send you the list -- I'd rather not murder the thread with a gigantic list of character names -- neatly alphabetized, of course.

Senioritis -- Four men in a coffeeshop. They write a novel.
Echo Flux -- Peasant girl saves the world with SCIENCE!
(That was NaNo 07. Screnzy?)
Ballroom Blitz -- The kind of highly-meta play that gets written by a student in Tech Theatre.

I met a girl named 'Zenobia' (Nicknamed Zoe) once, and I always wished I could use it for a character, but it never seemed to fit (I don't write sci-fi or fantasy).

I'm in love with the name Niamh (pronounced Nee-ve, not Nim) but it doesn't fit my character. It was her name for a while, but I kept calling her Norah both in my head and on the page. I actually do know a young girl named Niamh and she's adorable. It's A Gaelic name, if that helps at all.

Once, on an MMORPG forum, someone misspelt "red snails" and wrote it as "rad sniles." And I thought Rad Sniles would be the coolest name (or, more likely, nickname) to use for someone like a band manager, bouncer, club owner...someone in that kind of line of work. I dunno if I'll ever use it, so maybe someone else can get some use from it.
