Since we don't really need the ML's to schedule meetups, thought I'd start a Cary thread. Granted the MLS do bring the spiffy souvenirs.
- Barnes & Noble (B&N) across from the Cary Mall (think it's the intersection of Walnut & Maynard) - Address: 760 SE Maynard AND they're open 9-11 Every day (yep, that means Sundays too)
- Borders at the 440/40/1/64 area by Crossroads. Buck Jones Rd & Walnut St - Address: 1751 Walnut Street
- Caribou Coffee at Preston Corners - Address: 4214 Cary Parkway
- Caribou Coffee at Maynard Road - Address: 109 Maynard Road
Those are the locations I remember reading that someone mentioned. (wow, that was an awful sentence). Anywho, what do yall think? What times/locations are good for you?
Currently I'm heading for the B&N at Crabtree. I'll be there til 11.15 or so :)

Let me know what/when y'all decide to do. I'm up for a couple of meetups this year. And my shop(Lazy Lion Books in F-V) is always open for meets too, especially on Thurs/Friday nights when we're open later. We're not B&N so we're not open til 11 (because it's just me, one part-timer and my husband pitching in 6 hours a week) but hey, if y'all have a time you want to meet and write, I'll keep the shop open late and write with you.
I might even bake cookies.

Oh, all these locations look good to me. I have no idea what November will actually hold for me but I'm hoping to meet up at least a time or two.

Heh, how nice that I know exactly where all of those locations are. I hope there will be a couple of meet-ups this November--I'd love to meet some other Cary WriMos :)

I was thinking Tuesdays - entirely because there are no Canes games on Tuesdays in November. :)
Also I was in the Borders earlier and a quick look around in their Large cafe area did not reveal any electrical outlets. Is that an issue for anyone?

Ooookay, lemme try posting this again... Some how or another my reply was put in the middle of other replies.. I dunno. I guess I hit the wrong "reply" button. And I don't see a delete post option either.
Anyway -

Electrical outlets would be nice, since I'm functioning on an old, power-sucking laptop model.

Assuming you're talking about the Borders on Walnut and Buck Jones Road.
I have not checked since the remodel. But before there was a 2 outlets on the side window, one by the front window, and one on a pillar. Bringing a power strip would be a good idea.

If you want a lot of outlets and free wifi. Caribou Coffee is the place. On site parking is minimal.

That's actually a good idea :)
Raleigh isn't that far from Cary, though, and some of you Caryians could possibly come over to the kick-off party at Raleigh. It isn't too far away - just look at the "Who's coming to the kick-off party?" thread for more info.
For some of y'all it'll only take about 30 minutes' driving to get there.

Tuesdays are great.
I was in the Walnut/Buck Jones Borders yesterday. There are 2 or 3 outlets on the side wall under the window. At least one under the front window. And one on a post on the book side. Bring a power strip would be a good idea.
Sounds good to me.

I, too, was in the Buck Jones Borders on Tuesday. There are at least three outlets - the ones that ..Makana? mentioned. Sorry, I can't remember who said what. I also noticed that the "music" they were playing was loud, and that it was mighty chilly. However, their coffee is better (or maybe it's the baristas that are..) and the cafe space is large with plenty of room for a write in.
We can get all wild and crazy and rotate locations for each write in ;) Especially if one place doesn't work out/live up to expectations, etc.
What times are good? 6? 7? It's not like everyone has to be there for the entire time, come and go as you need. Personally I'll prolly show around 630.

They'll turn the music down for you, if you ask them nicely. I'd like to hit a couple of write-ins this year, and Tuesdays are great days for me.

I tried to reply the other day, but I'm not sure what happened... hmm. Anyway, I'd like to join some of the write-ins, if I can. Borders or any of the other places sound good to me. Tuesdays are good... I'd personally prefer 7ish, but like you said we don't all have to be there the whole time...

I've been to the Borders at Walnut and Buck Jones. The last time I checked, they had at least two power strips (five or six outlets) in the cafe on the side closest to the books. Wi-fi is expensive if you need access to research something quickly; if I recall, it's $10 for a day.
Tuesdays or the weekend work best for me, and I'm not especially concerned about the location. It'll be interesting to meet other local writers!
I'll be out of town from 1-6 November, but after that, I'm here the rest of the month. And I'll be writing while I'm gone as much as possible.

Why don't we just meet every Tuesday in Nov. at the Border's from 6pm to 9pm? People can come and go as they please, but there will always be someone there. If that doesn't work out we can always move the location or change the times to suit.

That sounds great!
If anyone wants to meet up tomorrow for the Kick-Off, though, that would be cool! I can go to either Barnes & Noble or Borders. =D I'd really love it if some people could come! Any time of day is cool.

I know this is posted in the last minute write ins as well, but TheLorax - our fearless wordy leader and I will be at Borders tomorrow night about 8ish. We might follow it up with a trip to Gypsy's Shiny Diner - since they are open 24 hours and all...
Hope to see some of you there - hate that I missed the kick off on Thursday night!

Feel free to come out tonight as well!
I find it easier to write where there is coffee, and lots of it!
Plus, it's nice to write with a bunch of people, it helps me stay focused and on track...
Also, there is always someone there if you need help with a word, or if a sentence just doesn't flow right. I know it's supposed to be about quanity, not quality, but for me it has to be good and make sense, as well as having the requisite number of words :)

Want to thank you and everyone that was at Borders last night on Walnut Street for being so welcoming to myself and my daughter. We hope we did not disturb anyone too much with our chatter but both of us suffer from mild (mine) to severe(her) Borderline Personality Disorder. We tend to get nervous and chatty around people. It was not our intent to offend or keep anyone from their duties. I enjoyed the information exchange and am grateful for it. One small question remains: Do you count just the words or characters with or without spaces in the word count box on this site?
Once again thank you for new and exciting evening.

It was great to have new people at the write-in! Keeps us from getting bored with each other ;)
As far as the word count, just use whatever number the word counting software in your word processing program comes up with. For Word, go to Tools, scroll to Word Count & click on it. Use the number next to Words.
Hope that's what you were asking. I haven't had any coffee or diet mt dew as yet, so the brain is still a touch foggy.

I had so much fun at the meetup tonight!
Makana and KnottyNeedle- you guys are great - I had a blast hearing stories about your kids! They made me laugh and want to call my parents and apologize for every silly thing I did!
Vix626- it was fun talking about shoes and customers with you!
ShaneOfFools and MuddySky - thanks for not running away scared from us with all our gossiping!
Swimmygirl - hope you had fun at your class and it was great of you to come out and write with us!

Well the above bares out what I thought and felt since going to the first write in with this group the first Tuesday in November. I was not welcomed nor did I fit in. C'est la vie. We can't all be someones cup of tea. Will not apologize for having been nervous, verbose or asking questions as a newbie but will apologize to my daughter for dragging her outside of her comfort zone for so little reward.
ML's take note:
To those that live in the RockyMount/Fayetteville/Benson/Angiers/Smithfield/Four Oaks area. An alert: there will be a bookstore/coffee house/art gallery opening on Third Street across from the Public Library downtown Smithfield. I haven't gotten the opening date nor the hours of operation yet but it will brand spanking new and have already spoke with the owners about this organization. They were very interested. Will try to find out the opening date and hours of operation and post them here if any one is interested in meeting there.
Also wanted to throw this out to the writers that don't fit the mold of the previously posted write ins...homemakers, disabled persons that aren't working, those that can't night drive, if anyone wants to do a day time write in Johnston County say Garner, Clayton, Fuquay Varina or Smithfield, holler at me through private email and we will see what we can do.
Wish everyone good writing and great characters. Hope to see you on the boards. Cin an da.

Jewels -
I hate that your felt that way - I didn't realize you didn't feel comfortable.
I know we are going there to write, but I like to get distracted and talk to people as well, and I was glad I wasn't the only one that night that couldn't concentrate on my computer.
I should have posted something earlier, but that one was a last minute write-in I thought, and I've been more chatty on the boards as I have felt comfortable with the organization, but there isn't an excuse.
I am sorry that you didn't feel welcome, and I wish you the best of luck with your novel - it did sound really funny yet true to life as well :)
