I'm writing a multiple-ending fantasy quest. It's actually a little more like a videogame you can read--for example, it has puzzles in it that you solve to pass to the next chapter/level. It's well-suited to NaNo, so if anyone else wants to join me in doing something a little kitschy but still fun, post about it here!

In mine, the MC wakes up on a pirate ship--the last thing he remembers is trying to rescue a cat that got stuck in a sewer drain. His first choice is that he can either let the pirates sell him into slavery when they reach shore--or he can fight their leader to regain freedom. The cat the MC was trying to save can talk now, unfortunately with a great deal of sarcasm. And luck is with him, because even though he fell into Faerie, he was still clutching his skateboard. The iron comes in handy...

I used to love the choose your own adventure goosebump books when I was younger! I think its a brill idea to try and write one. Your plot sounds cool, and funny, best of luck with it! and you may've just given me the kick to start thinking about this years NaNo novel thanks.

I remember reading "Young Indiana Jones" CYOAs. That sounds like a good idea. I don't know that I'll go this route, but keep us updated on how it goes. I'd like to hear more about it, like what kinds of puzzles you use and how to design them.

They're quite tricky to write. In fact, damn hard. Good luck.

Some of the 'Virtual Reality' gamebooks were a bit pants, but the pirate one and the faux-Africa one were quite atmospheric. No gamebook beats Lone Wolf though,

So you've tried before? What did you find difficult? If I'm going to run into trouble I want to know ahead of time ;)

I plotted a little today, and I didn't have any problems--but I think I owe a lot of that to WikidPad.

Tying up all the different possible actions in a way that doesn't seem contrived or illogical is quite difficult. Also, you'll probably end up doing loads and loads of re-reading, because you'll very likely forget what the hell's going on. That's my experience of it, anyway.

The idea of a CYOA is very fascinating. I like the idea because sometimes I have two or more equally valid plot lines but I feel like I have to pick only one for my characters to travel. You could have a lot of fun with the dares, if you're into using those. They might help you jumpstart a new plot thread if you run out of ideas. Good luck!

I <3 CYOA books! I've been dying to write one for some time, but since I've committed myself to two NaNos this year, it won't be during November :-P I figure something like a CYOA would be fun to write and then print one or two copies on Lulu to pass around to friends and family :-)
