How's it Going?

I can't believe I forgot to post this thread earlier. Eep!

So, how is the writing going? Slow and painful? Fits and starts? Flying high? Need a little rah now and again? This is the thread to come to!

I saw something rather exciting. As of today we are #341 on the regional scorecard. Congrats Prescott!

Hi everyone, I'm Toni. I'm 26 and I live in Paulden with my small zoo, doing Nano for the first time this year. Anyone else in Paulden or Chino?
Nov 15 Write In

I'm not completely on my feet, but I will be at tomorrow's write-in. It'll be from 2-4 PM at the Method Coffee (was called The Yellow Leaf Coffee Co). Same owners, same location, only the name has been changed. It is located on 3180 Willow Creek Road in the Fry's shopping center.

By the way, will there be another write-in this coming Tuesday night that I should put on the calendar? If so, just let me know. :)

Don't mind my occasional coughing. The doctor said I'm not contagious anymore. :)
Happy Belated ML Appreciation Day

Just saw on the home page that yesterday was ML Appreciation Day. For some reason that one hasn't made it to my hallmark calendar yet. Seriously, thanks for all you guys do. Like you're not busy enough with your lives and writing your own 50k. I am loving this and look forward to seeing everyone again at the next write in.

Region Word Count Page Is Up!

In past years I've put together a web page that brings together all the word counts of those active in the region. Since the Nano site just activated the word count API, it's now up and running!

The page is HERE, hosted on the Prescott Wordmongers website.

I think I got everyone. If someone is missing, please let me know. I'll check every few days to make sure the list is up to date.

You can also use the Author search here on the Nano site to bring up a partial listing of the active authors in our regions. However, be aware that this is incomplete because of the glitch I posted about before.
If It's Going to Happen, It'll Happen at Nano Time

I hate to do this, but...

On Tuesday I came down with a really bad flu. I was tested, and tested negative for the Swine Flu, but that's been very little comfort over the rest of the week. Missed work, missed writing for one whole day and struggled to get words on the other days.

I'm still sick as I write this today. There is no way I'm going to be recovered for tomorrow's write-in. I don't want anyone else to catch what I have, so this week I'm going to have to bow out. Trust me, you do not want this!

Jeannie has to work tomorrow, which means there won't be an ML at the write-in. However, if anyone wants to go, by all means. I'm sorry I can't be there myself.
Twas the night before NaNo

A ML from another region wrote this up and has offered to share. I had a few chuckles from it and thought the rest of you might enjoy it. :)

***

'Twas the night before NaNo, when all through the house
Not a keyboard was typing, not a click of a mouse.
The stickers were hung by the writer with care,
In Hopes that a Novel, soon would be there.

The Editors were nestled, all snug in their beds,
While visions of red pens, danced in their heads.
with Chris Baty in his viking hat and I in my shirt,
All the wrimo's world wide, sat waiting to work.

When out on the lawn, there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my writing spot, to see what was the matter.
Away to the window, I flew like a flash,
Tore open the window, threw up the sash.

The moon was big, with a very bright glow
and it looked like a screen that had something to show.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a story and eight characters.

With a little plot arc, so lively and round,
I knew in a moment, "My Novel - I've found!"
More rapid then eagles the chapters they came
and the story whistled and shouted and called things by name,

"Now characters, Now plot arcs, now storylines and more,
"On conflict, On turmoil, On plot twists galore.
To the top of the plot line, to November's 50K
Now write away, write away, write away today."

As dead words before the wild month fly,
When they meet with a Muse and mount to the sky
So up to my desk top these coursers, they flew
with a slew full of ideas, and my muse too.

And then in a twinkling I heard on my desk
The smattering of words, taking one last rest.
As I drew in my hand and was turning around
Appeared, did my muse, in one single bound.

It was dressed in all words, from its head to its foot
and its clothes were all tarnished with erasure gook.
Its bundle of stories were flung on its back
And it looked like Chris Baty - What's up with that?

Its eyes how they shimmered, Its dimples how scary,
Its cheeks were all blustery, its smile so merry.
Its droll little mouth was drawn up like an "oh"
And not a beard on its chin, that'd be freaky, ya know?

The stump of a pencil it held tight in its teeth,
And punctuation encircled its head like a wreath.
It had a bright face and a round cuppa coffee
That shook when it laughed, without ever sloshing.

It was awkward and lumpy, a right crazy old elf
And I laughed when I saw it, in spite of myself.
A wink of Its eye and a twist of Its head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

It spoke not a word, but went straight to my desk
And It looked at my blank page then said, "Surely you Jest"
Laying its fingers aside of my keys, It winked at me once,
And slid inward with ease.

It sprang on my screen, to the words it gave whistle
and away they all flew to it, like the down of a thistle
But I heard it exclaim, err it faded into the night
"Happy NaNo to all, tonight you shall write!"

Search Bug - All Prior Year Participants Please Read

There is a glitch in the Nano website Author Search bug. This applies specifically to anyone who is a past Nano participant who has had the Prescott Region Homed. To see if it affects you, follow these steps:

* Go to the Search page and choose the "Authors" tab.

* Click the link “Click for advanced search options”

* Check the box “Search only members in my home region.”

* See if your name comes up.

If your name does come up then you are good to go. However, if it does not then it means that you have been caught in this glitch. Fortunately, there is a way to fix this:

* Go to your personal Author Profile (the “My NaNoWriMo” link in the header).

* Click on the “My Regions” link on the left side of your Author Profile.

* Go to the “Home Region” tab.

* Choose “No Home Region” and save.

* Now choose the option “United States :: Arizona :: Prescott” and save.

What this is doing is toggling your preference and forcing the database to take notice. Go back to the Author Search and do another region search. Your name should now show up. I’ve tested this myself and it works.

This problem is a known site issue, however, it may be a while before they get around to fixing this particular glitch. So, if you have five minutes of time you might want to try the steps above.

Let me know if you have any problems or questions.

Good to see familiar faces as well as several first years. I think it's going to be a record word count for our region this year.

Can't wait to get started on Sunday - WOOHOO!
Kick-Off Party and Other Event Schedules

A bit of exciting news. The Prescott region of "National Novel Writing Month" is now in library partnership with the Prescott Library. This means several exciting things for the group. We have a place to meet with a library that fully supports our writing cause. The Library will also be helping to publicize our wonderful event, which means we might be seeing many new faces. The Library is also interested in building up the event in the future.

Whee!

All of this has an immediate impact to our region. We will be holding both our Kick-Off party and our very first Write-In of the month at the library:

Kick-Off Party: Tuesday, October 27th from 6pm to 7:30pm. To be held in the Founders room Suite A & B (on the lower level). We are in the midst of planning out lots of lovely fun for this event, including games, giveaways, and free refreshments.

"Hit the Keyboards" Write-In: Sunday, November 1st from 2pm to 4pm. Come start off your writing month with a good habit: dedicated time to get in a few good words! Bring your laptop, pens, journals, muse ... and get started in the company of experienced marathon writers.

The other events planned are:

Regular Write-Ins: Sunday from 2pm to 4pm at the Yellow Leaf Coffee Co. in Prescott. Great drinks, and comfy chairs. These will occur on the Sunday, November 8, 15, 22, and 29. Yellow Leaf is located on 3180 Willow Creek Road in the Fry's shopping center. They serve coffees, teas, chai, cold drinks, cakes, bagels, and other pastries. There's a Jack-In-The-Box and a Subway in this center as well so you can get dinner or lunch before or after if the sweet treats aren't your thing. NOTE: Special stickers to those who show up!

Live Chat - Prescott Wordmongers: Every Monday night from 7-8pm. . This chat does not need any special software as it works in any browser. Just sign into the site with your favorite browser, go to live chat (the chat uses the same username and password, so if it prompts you for a login again, just use that), go into the writing room and you are good to go! We will be meeting here every Monday night from this coming Monday to November 30.

A full listing of these events are available for viewing in the group Google calendar. You will find this listing on the front page of the regional forum up at the top right.

If you are interested in joining us for the kick-off party please respond to this thread. If someone needs help getting to the library, please speak up. We can see if anyone is near you with which you could possibly carpool.

Hope to see you there!
NaNo 2009 novel ideas

Do you already have an idea for your Nano book? If so, shout out about it in this thread!

And I'll start. :)

As usual, I'll be writing a science fiction novel. The first novel is going to be a SF version of the fairy tale "Little Red Riding Hood". Complete with an alien wolf, trees that move on their own, and a planetary mystery. And just what the heck is granny doing up there in her cottage in the middle of the forest, anyway? Oh, and red cape figures into it, too. It should be a lot of fun to write as it's already been really fun to plot it out.

Yay for Nano!
Setting your Home Region to Prescott

During November it’s fun to compare our region’s progress against other regions in both word count and donations. The Region Word Counts only take into account those who have their "Home Region" set up properly. To do that, here are a few instructions:

1. Sign in to the Nanowrimo web site and hover your mouse over the menu "My NaNoWriMo". One of the options under this menu is "My Regions". You can also get to this via your profile. On the left you will find a link that says "My Regions" Note: This will only show up if you are signed in.

2. Click "My Regions".

3. There are 3 tabs here: "Regions, "My Regions", "Home Region". Typically you will automatically be taken to the "My Regions" tab.

3a. If you have no regions chosen at all, click on the "Regions" tab. Here you will find a complete listing of all the regions available. Right now, Prescott is on the second page.

3b. On the right side of the "Prescott" line, you will see a link that says "Join". Confirm you wish to join, and now "Prescott" will show up under the tab "My Regions"

4. Click on the "Home Region" tab. Here you find a listing of all the regions that are listed under the "My Regions" tab with a little check box to the left of the name. NOTE: You must first have at least 1 region listed under the "My Regions" tab for you to be able to choose a home region.

5. Choose which of the regions you want to have as your home region and click that circle.

6. Click the button that says "Set Home Region".

Your home region is now saved and your word count will now count for the Prescott area!

Please note that this will also potentially subscribe you to receiving regional e-mail for that region as well as having all new forum posts forwarded to you. You can adjust these settings by going to Profile: Manage Subscriptions and Notifications (under Manage my settings).

Hope that helps!
