Hi all,

Last November, a group of us met every Saturday afternoon to write at the Java Monkey in Decatur. We'll be there again this year, starting on Saturday, November 3. I'll be getting there between 3:30 and 4 and probably leaving about 3 hours later, but I suspect if you show up anytime between 3 and 7, you'll find some NaNo people typing or scribbling away. In the past, we've usually grabbed a couple of the tables up front.

Anyone else who wants to join us is welcome! Java Monkey is located in downtown Decatur. Besides its tasty organic coffee, it also has a wine bar, and plenty of sandwiches and desserts.

I've posted this on our Yahoo Group's calendar as well, along with the Java Monkey address for anyone who needs it.

Hope to see you there!

Laurie

I'll also be there. The write-ins from the past two years were a lot of fun, so if you can come, definitely do so. Not that I'm biased or anything... ;-)

ooh, me. Pick me. I wrote a lot there last year and had tons of fun bouncing ideas off of everyone. (Thankfully none of the bouncing ideas did any lasting damage. That we're aware of.)

I live about a mile and a half from downtown Decatur, and I keep saying I'll go to write-ins but never do. Maybe this will be the year!

I'm so sad. I just moved to Columbus from Atlanta and I miss Java Monkey and Joe's and all the places where I loved to work there.

Unless I want to go to a bar (and they tend to frown upon laptops) there is not a place here where I can get a glass of wine while I write.

Good luck everyone!!!

I am new to participating in nanowrimo but I am familiar to the rhymes and rhytmes of Java Monkey. I have been working on several writing projects for the past year and find the Java Monkey stimulating on many different levels ( I need all of the help I can get). While I will be out of town for most of November on the Texas Gulf Coast I would like to catch up with the group later in the month. This is my first group on line cyber experience in working on my writing so I am moving toward November with a rich mixture of anxiety both exciting and scarey. I am writting this to get a connection with those in the group who are wanting a cyber-support connection as well as a reason to spend an afternoon feeling literary.

What's their power for laptops policy? Do they let you use their outlets? I'm willing to buy copious amounts of coffee (and drink them too).

Ooo, this sounds awesome. I'm in Marietta so it's a little bit of a trek, but I'm familiar with the area (and will be moving back soon anyway).

TheGirlWhoStole..., Java Monkey lets you use their outlets at no cost. But it's always awesome if you buy something, especially since it's so good and fair trade! So definitely get something.

Will I be the youngest person present at this write-in (at 17)?

Will anyone be offended if I alternated between cranking out NaNoWriMo words and graduate school applications? :P

Hey chuff, it's possible you'll be the youngest, but we won't card ya. ;) One of the best thing about NaNo meetups is the range of people's ages and experiences.

And anyway, you probably won't LOOK any younger than I do. :) Whenever I go to the IHOP, I get asked if I need a kids' menu.

magsol, no worries. I may be switching back and forth among several projects, too.

Good luck with your applications!

Love the Java Monkey been there once. Its a trek for me, and one Saturday a month I will have to miss to military duty, but I will defiantly try to come. I'll be juggling stuff to, currently working on my MBA and seem to have a paper due every week, so will probably flip back and forth.

I'm also 17. I'm not sure if I can make it yet, but I'm going to try. So the younger nanowrimo population will have a fair amount of representation ;)

I've just been informed that Java Monkey is very close to the Decatur MARTA station, so I'll be there.

I am in Decatur, near the Kensington Station MARTA stop. I have been in the Atlanta area for just two years. My publications so far have been largely academic (philosophic, philological, and literary criticism), and I have just published a Latin textbook. In addition, I write a weekly column for the independent The Sunday Paper. I plan to use NaNoWriMo to write a non-fiction work (a book length commentary on Hamlet). Would I be welcome in your group?

So I showed up for my first ever write-in at Java Monkey yesterday.

Unfortunately, I didn't really know who to look for. I don't think any of y'all have put pics up on your nano pages. :-P

I saw a whole bunch of people inside, all spread out throughout the place, and lots of laptops. I didn't see anyone who was obviously nano, and there really wasn't much room.

There was no one with a laptop outside, where there was plenty of room, and it was a beautiful day (too beautiful, considering the draught), so I sat there for a while.

I guess I'm too shy, but I didn't want to go around to everyone asking whether they were there for the write-in. Was anyone there? Is there anything we can do to make it easier for the new guy to find you?

Hey Rob,

Sorry we missed you yesterday! I meant to bump this topic up yesterday morning and give a general idea of where we'd be in the coffeehouse (as well as warn people about the traffic from the wine tasting festival), but some things came up and I wasn't able to get online. There were 6 of us yesterday, plus one family member who sat with us and did homework, plus one NaNoer who stopped in from the wine festival to say hello. I knew that we were expecting a few more; I should have realized that the 2-year-old NaNo sticker on my laptop wasn't enough of a welcome sign.

We'll be in the same area next week -- indoors, up front, on the left, in the area of tables between the couches. I hope I'm not jinxing things by saying this, but somehow it has always worked out for us to get that spot, and to have enough seating for all who have shown up. *crossing fingers* I'll upload a profile pic, too.

Hope to see you next Saturday!

Laurie

I was actually there the first write-in too, but I didn't know where the NaNo people were, so I spent the afternoon skulking in one of the armchairs by the front door. It was very nice meeting everyone today, though!

Hello - write in was cool. It was nice to meet some of you. I never go to any writers group type things (I guess I'm kind of shy - prefer to reside inside my head), so it was fun to meet a few local writers and talk a bit. Good luck everyone, maybe I'll see you at Java Monkey again in two or three weeks.

Hey, I skulked during the first one, too! Only I was outside. And this time I didn't skulk, but I didn't meet you. Maybe next Saturday.
