Like I said on the Grande Prairie thread, writer's meetings are fun, friendly, and inspiring... you'll meet people from different backgrounds that all have something in common, which is the perfect way to break the ice. Gee, it sure would be nice if I could attend one... and maybe I can! Through an unexpected plot development (what? already?), it appears that I'll be in Red Deer on the first of November, and I'd love to meet some more of you fine people.
Would anyone care to join me there that evening? It's a chance to share your ideas and bask in the warm glow of unconditional approval, get inspired with a few ideas, and if you bring a laptop and/or notebook, you can get a good start on the first day of writing while we cheer each other on. (I'll bring a power bar, and ask for a table by an electrical outlet, just in case.) Naturally, it's open to anyone in the general area who can make it -- not just those inside city limits.
Saturday, November 03 in Red Deer, then. I have a friend who says Glenn's Restaurant and Tea Room would be ideal for this sort of thing, but I'm open to suggestions. Let me know in this thread if you're coming, and what time would work for you. Oh, and bring a friend/family member if you'd like.
See you there!
EDIT: Glenn's is too far out of town for some people, so the locale's officially moving to Denny's. Hope to see you there!

I would be overjoyed to meet some people in my area. I am completely new to nanowrimo so I could use all the help I can get. Unfortunatly I work until six on weekdays so any time after six is good for me.

Well it's unfortunate, I work m-f in the evenings so I find it difficult to make any meet ups. Have fun tho.

I live in Red Deer! My friend and I were thinking of going to the Edmonton one but if there's one in Red Deer... that'd be even better.
My creative writing class is Thursday night, though, so... that's won't work out, unfortunately, unless it went until after 9:30...

Okay, so I apparently chose the one day in November that nobody can attend. There certainly does seem to be enough interest, though. Time to reschedule, then!
The first weekend of November? How about 2:00 PM, Sunday the 4th? That gives people a chance to write on Saturday before they get distracted by coffee talk.
Does this work better for people? I still like Glenn's as a location, but other ideas are always welcome.

I'm booked all day Sundays unfortunately... Of course, that doesn't mean don't do it, I can always get together with other people later, just unfortunately not meet you. ^^

Wow -- I had no idea there were other people in Red Deer doing this. I got introduced to NaNoWriMo a couple of years ago by an online friend from Kentucky! I've never been able to actually try, though -- this is my first year.
Sorry, but I won't be able to make it to the meetup. I don't have transportation out of town. But have fun, folks!

First of all, welcome to your first NaNo, Timewalker! We'll be cheering for you!
Secondly, don't forget that the venue chosen is by a guy who doesn't live in Red Deer, on the recommendation of a friend who also doesn't live in Red Deer. If there's a place or time that suits people better, why wouldn't we switch to that instead?
I'm just trying to get the ball rolling... my suggestions are never set in stone.
Cheers!

All right -- the people have decided! The first Red Deer novel-writing meeting will be at Denny's, on Saturday, Nov 03, at 2:00PM. The suggestions I had for the Lethbridge meeting also apply here:
# When you enter, say that you're with "the novel-writing group", so that the staff will be able to guide everyone to the same table. If you bring your writing equipment or a toy dinosaur, that's usually a pretty good indicator of a writer at work, too.
# You don't have to order a meal, but keep the "minimum purchase" in mind, just to keep the staff from getting grumpy.
# There are usually a few electrical outlets available for laptops, but ask first, and bring a power bar, so that other people can use the outlet, too.
# Bringing a non-writing friend is fine. Bringing a writing friend is even better -- it won't be too late to sign up.
# Are you guys familiar with word wars? It's very simple: if you feel you've been chatting for too long, just call out for a word war. Everybody puts their head down and writes as much as they can for ten minutes. When the ten minutes are up, compare totals and see how well everybody did. You'd be surprised how effective they can be!
There's no trick to it -- just have fun, and show some support for your fellow writers. Enjoy!
I hope everyone has a good time!

Careful there, asrai... note that the meeting date's been moved to SATURDAY, not Sunday. Terribly sorry about the confusion.
Will you be there Saturday, then? I hope so!

Well I hope to be there. I just have to try and shake off the relitives for a few hours. Ok technically relitive. Singular. But that shouldn't be too difficult. I think. Ooo I'm excited now.

Hi everyone,
This is my third time writing Nano. I'm hoping to meet everyone Saturday at 2 at Denny's. Unless that's been changed.
I'm trying to think where Denny's is. Is it on the southside near Chapters?

Denny's is just north of Moxie's and Southside Chrysler - it would be about 31st Street (if there was a 31st Street). Sorry - I can't join you all, I'll be working in the gallery. Hopefully, no clients will come by and I can get lots of novelling done.

I wasn't able to attend Saturday's get-together. How did it go? I run the gallery Thursday and Friday evening until 9 and Saturday 10-4. Any interest in having a get-together there? Nice art on the walls, plenty of space to hang out. Let me know - easy to find downtown location.

There were 4 in attendance. Skeletic(SP?), zwee, MaikiJ and myself, and 1 cheerleader my 5 year old daughter. We chatted, we laughed. We ate and discussed Dr. Who. I didn't have a laptop and we didn't write anything anyway. But it was nice to connect with other writers. I had fun. A get together at the gallary sounds good on a Saturday or something. Maybe next week? Anyone up for that?

I'm glad you all managed to meet up and have a good time! You can either use this thread to organise the next meeting, or start a brand-new one. Either way, let me know and I'll put it in the event calendar for you.
