Hi, there!
I'm Jean, the ML for Richmond this year. At the parties and write-ins I'll be the one with blue-streaked hair. Other than my hair, I'm reasonably uncomplicated: I love to write; I live south of the James; I have a spouse, kids, cats, dog; I sling retail; I like hiking, reading, music, cheesy sci-fi, manga, knitting. What's really important to know is that I want to crank out my 50K words and have a blast doing it with all you guys. To that end, let's get this show on the road!
Kick-off Party
- Last year's kick-off was held at the Olive Garden on 7113 W Broad St.
in Richmond (zip code 23294), and I remember having a great time. One caveat: Olive Garden will not back down from their "no reservations" policy. I asked, and was told that they could accommodate twenty to thirty people, but they couldn't guarantee that we will get the neat room we had last year, or that we won't have to wait to get seated. However, things did work out last year, and I suspect that if we showed up at the right time, we'll have no problems at all. - Sunday, October 28, is a great day to meet and get to know each other before the madness starts. I suggest early evening, say around 5:00 PM, to avoid the dinner rush at Olive Garden.
- If Sunday can't work for most people, would Saturday, October 27 work better?
So! What say you all to the Olive Garden on W. Broad St on Sunday, October 28, say around 5:00 PM? Sound out here, and if the yeas outnumber the nays in the next couple days, then I'll see you at the Olive Garden on Sunday evening!

What we did last year was that Sarah and I went to the Olive Garden about an hour early and that let us get the room. You go early and explain to them that you are going to have a bunch of people (and doesn't hurt to call and warn them, even if they won't take a reservation) and they work on clearing out the room for you. I'm sorry I won't be able to be there. I will miss all of you, but as I am in Boston, the commute would be a little much. Have a great party.

You are missed! I hope you going to hook up with wrimos in Boston.
And thanks for the tip; I plan on showing up early, and I plan on calling them the day before to let 'em know what they're in for. Last year you guys did such a great job, it makes everything easy for me this year. Thanks!

Thanks for planning this. I'm not even sure if I'm going to be in town. If I am, Saturday might be better for me... I'll check back and see what you decide.

I know I won't be able to be their Saturday since I have VBODA for marching band and homecoming that night and Sunday is an iffy thing since being as I am 14 I cannot exactly drive and I would have to do some convincing of my parents and I know I will have schoolwork and I'd have to convince my parents to let me skip Sunday school. As much as I would love to be there, it is probably a 1 in 20 chance I could so I guess I'd say no. Sorry. :(

I'm fine with either day. Just let me know the which one you choose and I'll be there. Sunday might be better for the restaurant being able to accommodate us.

Sunday is ideal for me, and I'll certainly come if that's when you guys hold the kickoff party since I just moved here and I'm really excited about meeting other writers.

I'm excited about doing NaNo for the second time. And a little scared. I have no ideas at all. So what?
It was okay at the Olive Garden last year but you must remember we waited about 90 minutes for a table. There's the hour that the MLs waited before I got there and the 30 minutes wait after I got there. I don't think Olive Garden is worth all that. There are plenty of places that will take reservations for 30 people. I'd rather go to Golden Corral where they have lots of chairs and no wait (or some other place that takes reservations) instead of the Olive Garden.
Sunday at 5 pm is better for me. I agree that there should be very few diners at that hour and maybe it will be faster getting into Olive Garden at that time. But will the service be as good?
I'm happy to go along with the majority. Looking forward to the kick off where ever it is.

Nuts. I have to work that weekend. Will there be other meet-ups? On the Bus line (I am vehicularly impared and don't have a license anyway)?
Edit: Oh, DUH, I'm dumb. Went back and read the email. Is the World Cup near a bus stop?

I'd love to manage to make it, but my company has an ISO audit on the 6th so I may be working that weekend. (dagnabit)
I didn't get a chance last year to participate in any writeins, but they sound like a lot of fun! I don't suppose anyone else is down here in Newport News? Richmond is a bit of a trek for me... *hordes her writing time*

Ooo, that could be fun! But seeing as how I'm three years shy of being able to drive, I'd have to do a lot of begging and pleading. Sunday would probably be better since my parental units prefer to have an advance warning... It's only a 25 minute drive from where I live, so that'll probably work in my favor. :D Anyway, I'll be sure to post again if I can come!
And, uh... If no one around my age comes, I probably won't go...

Gah! Stupid work. I don't get off until 6, and I've got loads of stuff I need to do once I get off.
Maybe I'll be able to attend a write-in or two, who knows.
Hope to see some of you over this next month!
